Clemson baseball roasted by social media for embarrassing season-ending loss to Kentucky

Clemson baseball roasted by social media for embarrassing season-ending loss to Kentucky Clemson baseball's 2025 season ended with an ugly 16-4 loss to the Kentucky Wildcats Sunday at the Clemson Regional of the NCAA Tournament at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. From No. 2 in the Coaches Poll and top 25 rankings just six weeks earlier to being one of the first host seeds to be eliminated on its home field in the 64-team tournament in regional play, the Tigers' once-promising season ended in colossal disappointment. The Tigers, who close the year at 45-18 overall, committed four errors in the first four innings and would finish with seven for the day. The offense never got a big rally going after grabbing a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning against a Kentucky (31-25) team that entered the tournament just five games over .500 for the year and finished 13th out of 16th in the SEC. RELATED: Live updates from Clemson vs. Kentucky Jarren Purify totaled four of the Tigers' nine hits in the loss, and Cam Cannarella got a nice ovation from the home crowd in what's expected to be his final at-bat in a Clemson uniform. If so, the junior outfielder ends his college career with a 22-game hitting streak. But it was the Tigers' pitching staff and defense (lack thereof) that was the big story. Clemson pitching allowed 16 runs on 13 hits, and the Tigers' College World Series drought will now reach 15 years after another disappointing NCAA tournament exit. Here's how Clemson fans and media reacted to the Tigers' demise on social media. Duke drops 10 in the 7th to surge past Clemson, ties the series

Duke drops 10 in the 7th to surge past Clemson, ties the series Clemson let a five-run lead slip away in stunning fashion Saturday, as Duke scored 10 unearned runs in the seventh inning to rally past the ninth-ranked Tigers 15-10 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The win evens the pivotal ACC series at a game apiece. The Tigers (38-14, 15-11 ACC) have now lost four of their last five games and nine of the past 12. Clemson's pitching and defense fell apart in the seventh. Leading 6-5, the Tigers appeared poised to turn a routine double play, but a fielding error by Jarren Purify opened the floodgates. Duke capitalized with a barrage of two-out hits and free passes — scoring 10 runs without any being earned. In total, Clemson issued 11 walks, hit three batters, and allowed 14 base runners via free pass. Duke (34-16, 15-11 ACC) pounded out 13 hits, including four solo home runs. AJ Gracia stayed hot with two homers and two RBI, giving him three long balls in the series. Ben Rounds added a 2-for-4 performance with a homer and three RBI, while Jake Hyde delivered a key two-run single in the seventh. Clemson initially responded well after giving up a first-inning homer to Gracia. Josh Paino's three-run blast and an RBI single from Andrew Ciufo helped Clemson build a 6-1 lead by the end of the first. Luke Gaffney had three hits and two RBI, while Cam Cannarella added two hits and an RBI. But the Tigers couldn't hold the lead. A series of miscues and lack of clutch pitching in the seventh inning unraveled what had been a promising afternoon. Duke went 9-for-15 with two outs, tallying 11 two-out RBI. Clemson, meanwhile, was just 2-for-10 in those spots and struck out 15 times at the plate. Clemson tacked on four runs after the collapse, but it wasn't enough to climb back. The series finale is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. on ACCNX. Contact us @Clemson_Wire on X, and like our page on Facebook for ongoing coverage of Clemson Tigers news and notes, plus opinions.

How to watch Clemson baseball vs Duke today: Time, TV info for weekend series games

How to watch Clemson baseball vs Duke today: Time, TV info for weekend series games Clemson baseball heads into its final regular season home series looking to get back on track -- and fast. With the ACC Baseball Championship and NCAA Tournament quickly approaching, the ninth-ranked Tigers (37-13 overall, 14-10 ACC) have dropped seven of their last nine games following Tuesday's 5-3 loss at Coastal Carolina. Clemson fell in Sunday's series-deciding game at Florida State and were mauled in a three-game sweep at NC State a week earlier. The Tigers have dipped to No. 9 in the RPI and are no longer favored to secure a top eight national seed in the NCAA Tournament, at least per the latest field of 64 projections from Baseball America and D1 Baseball. All the while, Clemson's production at the plate has continued to slip. Entering play Friday, the Tigers are batting just .270 as a team -- 14th out of the 16 ACC programs. Second baseman Jarren Purify (.311/.444/.490) is the only player hitting above .300, though Cam Cannarella (.298/.442/.438) is close. The Tigers' two-out hitting and with runners in scoring position have been particularly lacking of late. Clemson pitching has taken something of a beating, as well. Friday night starter Aidan Knaak (6-1, 4.66 ERA) turned in a nice bounce-back against Florida State by holding the Seminoles to two runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings but was shelled a week earlier at NC State. But closer Lucas Mahlstedt couldn't lock down a two-run lead in the ninth inning Friday, which caused the Tigers' arms to be reshuffled a bit as long reliever/Sunday starter B.J. Bailey was called into pitch Game 1. Clemson pitchers were torched for 20 runs on 21 hits in Sunday's loss. Conversely, Duke (33-15 overall, 14-10 conference) enters the series on a tear. Despite being unranked in any of the top 25 rankings, coach Chris Pollard's team has won nine of its last 10. New NCAA Tournament projections for Clemson baseball after loss to Coastal Carolina

New NCAA Tournament projections for Clemson baseball after loss to Coastal Carolina Clemson continues to drop in the experts' latest NCAA Tournament projections following a rough 2-7 stretch. The Clemson Tigers dropped their seventh game in nine tries on Tuesday night in Conway with a 5-3 loss to Coastal Carolina in a matchup of Top 25 teams. The Tigers played from behind all night as the offense failed to put together a big inning. With Jarren Purify out of action and in a walking boot in recent days, and Cam Cannarella having a 1-for-5 showing at the plate, no batter in the Clemson lineup was hitting over .300 for the season after Tuesday's loss. Clemson is now 37-13 overall following losses to Coastal Carolina and ACC frontrunner Florida State in Tallahassee. The skid had dropped the Tigers to No. 9 in this week's USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, down seven spots from two weeks earlier when Erik Bakich's club came within a clutch hit or two of sweeping a top 25 Louisville Cardinals team. The Tigers are No. 9 in the RPI and 7-10 in Quad 1 games. Wednesday saw the release of the updated field of 64 projections for the 2025 NCAA Tournament from both Baseball America and D1 Baseball. For the first time all season, Clemson is no longer considered a top eight national seed by two of the sport's most reputable outlets. Here are the latest postseason projections for Clemson baseball. Clemson baseball's updated NCAA Tournament projections amid late-season skid Baseball America: No. 9 overall seed; hosting Ole Miss Rebels (33-15), Xavier Musketeers (29-21), and Fairfield Stags (34-13) in Clemson Regional. Baseball America dropped Clemson another three spots in its projected seeding this week. The Tigers are currently one spot below projected No. 8 seed North Carolina. The Tar Heels wrap up regular season play against NC State in Chapel Hill and Florida State in Tallahassee (May 15-17). D1 Baseball: No. 10 overall seed, hosting Alabama Crimson Tide (37-12), Cincinnati Bearcats (28-20), and Wright State Raiders (30-15) in Clemson Regional. D1 Baseball dropped Clemson three spots in its projected seeding, as well. The Tigers are projected behind the No. 8 seed Vanderbilt Commodores and No. 9 Tennessee Volunteers. NCAA Baseball Tournament projections, updated May 7 The Texas Longhorns (39-8) remain the No. 1 overall seed in both Baseball America and D1 Baseball projections. Baseball America has the Georgia Bulldogs as the No. 2 seed, Florida State at No. 3, Arkansas at No. 4, and the Auburn Tigers rounding out the top five seeds. D1 Baseball has Arkansas as the No. 2 seed, followed by FSU at No. 3. The LSU Tigers and Georgia round out the top five seeds. Clemson hosts the Duke Blue Devils (33-15) beginning Friday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Game 1 is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET and can be found on ACC Network Extra (ACCNX). The Tigers visit the Pitt Panthers (25-21) to close the regular season May 15-17. Clemson baseball heads into its ACC opener against Notre Dame on a heater. At 17-1 overall, the Tigers have gotten off to one of the best starts in the nation. A year after making their first Super Regional appearance in 14 years, Erik Bakich's club is ranked No. 4 in Perfect Game's Top 25, No. 5 in Baseball America's rankings, and No. 6 in this week's USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. Second baseman Jarren Purify leads the team in hitting with a .462 average, .535 on-base percentage and .788 slugging percentage while hitting three home runs and collecting four doubles. The Tigers' transfer portal class has also stepped up in a big way. Outfielder Dominic Listi, who transferred from Indiana State, is second on the team in hitting with a .333 average and a .518 OBP.
