1 2 3 4 Varanasi: Police arrested as many as 13 criminals— 3 in Varanasi, 6 in Jaunpur, 4 in Ghazipur—following encounters on Monday. ADCP, Kashi Zone, T Sarvanan said that after receiving inputs regarding movement of criminals, the Chetganj police in Varanasi alerted Jaitpura police and surrounded them near Dhobahiya Pokhari area in Chowkaghat in the wee hours on Monday. Apart from illegal firearms, the police recovered over Rs 25,000 cash from them. On seeing the cops, the miscreants opened fire at them. When cops retaliated in self-defence, one accused identified as Mohammad Salim (27) suffered a bullet injury in the leg. His two accomplices, Mohammad Jashim and Sonu Kumar, were arrested. Salim and Jashim are natives of Delhi, while Sonu belongs to Bihar. They were on the police radar for deceiving many passengers near the railway station to extort money. They confessed to targeting passengers near ATMs at Varanasi Junction and Marimai crossing and fleeing after looting their jewellery, ATM cards, and mobile phones. Salim and Jashim withdrew Rs 48,000 with a looted ATM card, while Sonu transferred Rs 50,000 online using a looted mobile. SP Kaustubh said that when policemen retaliated, two miscreants, Robin Kumar and Rajman Kumar of Azamgarh, suffered bullet injuries in their legs. Apart from them, police also arrested Shivang Singh, Rajan Kumar, Rinku Kumar of Azamgarh, and Shivam Singh of Jankipuram in Lucknow. The police recovered a country-made pistol and cartridges. Officials said that a total of 26 cases, mostly of burglary, were lodged against him in Ghazipur, Ballia, and other districts. In another action, a joint team of SWAT, Mohammadabad, and Karimuddinpur police station raided a mango orchard near Hata railway crossing on Monday morning, after getting inputs about gathering of a gang of thieves. On seeing the cops, the criminals opened fire at the police. When the cops started retaliatory firing, one Sunil suffered a bullet injury in the leg. His two other accomplices were also caught by police. Police recovered two country-made pistols, cartridges, stolen goods, and Rs 4.30 lakh cash from them. Police said that a total of 21 criminal cases, mostly of theft, were lodged against Sunil.
