Bodies of Kenya bus accident victims to be brought to Kochi today
T'puram: The bodies of five Keralites who died in a bus accident in Kenya will be brought to Nedumbassery airport on a Qatar Airways flight at 8.45am on Sunday . The bodies of Muvattupuzha native Jasna, 29, her daughter Roohi Mehrin (one-and-a-half-years-old), Thiruvalla native Geetha Shoji Isaac, 58, Palakkad Mannur native Riya Ann, 41, and her daughter Tyra Rodrigues, 7, will be brought to Kochi. Only a few hours before the flight from Kenya to Qatar, the travel agency authorities informed that the yellow fever vaccine certificate was mandatory, causing concerns about delays in bringing the bodies home. Members of the Loka Kerala Sabha in Kenya sought urgent intervention and informed Norka Roots, following which the state govt held discussions with the Union health ministry. After chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan intervened, the central govt granted a special exemption from the health precaution requiring a yellow fever vaccine certificate for the bodies and their accompanying relatives to enter India. Norka Roots will receive the bodies on behalf of the state govt and will transport them to their homes. The tourist bus carrying a group of 28 Indians on a sightseeing trip met with an accident around 7pm on June 9 . They had come from Qatar for sightseeing. Bodies of Kenya bus accident victims to reach Kochi on Sunday
The bodies of five people from Kerala who were killed in a bus accident in Kenya on June 9 will be brought by a Qatar Airways flight to the Cochin International Airport on Sunday morning. Those killed are Jasna, 29, from Guruvayur, her daughter, Ruhi Mehrin; Geetha Shoji, 58, from Cherukol, near Mavelikara; and Riya Puthanpurayil, 41, and her daughter, Taira, from Kanhirampara, Mannoor, in Palakkad. The intervention of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan helped in the Centre relaxing rules on yellow fever vaccination certificate for relatives accompanying the bodies back to Kerala, says a release. From Kochi, the bodies will be taken to the respective towns. The bodies will be received at the airport by Minister for Industries P. Rajeeve. The five people were part of a group of 28 Indian tourists from Qatar who were on board the ill-fated bus in Kenya.

Five Qatar-based Keralites dead in Kenya road accident
Thiruvananthapuram: At least 5 Keralites based in Qatar were killed after their tourist bus met with an accident in Kenya, where they were on holiday, on Monday, according to the chief minister's office. Sajith Sankar of Loka Kerala Sabha, the Kerala govt initiative to tackle issues of non-resident Keralites, told TOI from Kenya that according to details collected by them, Geetha Shoji Isaac, 58, of Thiruvananthapuram; Jasna Makkar Kuttikattuchalil, 29; her 18-month-old daughter Roohie Mehrin Mohammed of Thoyakkavu near Venkitangu, Thrissur; Riya Ann Rodrigues, 41, and her eight-year-old daughter Tyra Rodrigues of Mannur panchayat in Palakkad were killed in the accident. "A group of 28 Indians from Qatar were visiting Kenya, where their bus met with an unfortunate road accident yesterday," the Embassy of India in Doha said on Tuesday. The accident occurred on Ol Jororok-Nakuru Road in Nyandarua County, according to the High Commission of India in Nairobi. The bus reportedly fell into a gorge around 7 pm IST. The CMO said in a statement that Indian nationals injured in the accident, including Keralites, were being shifted to major hospitals in Nairobi. The bodies of the deceased are also expected to be brought to Nairobi. Conveying his condolences to the victims' families, the chief minister said the global contact centre of NORKA Roots, the state-run agency for Non-Resident Keralites, at 1800 425 3939 (toll-free in India) or +91 88020 12345 (missed call service for those abroad) could be contacted for more details. The relatives of Jasna said her husband Muhammed Haneef was injured in the accident. He was admitted to a hospital in Nyandarua County initially and later airlifted to Nairobi for better treatment. Abdul Azeez, the younger brother of Haneef's father, said Haneef was not yet informed about the death of his wife and baby. Haneef is working as a chartered accountant in Qatar while Jasna was employed in a hospital there. He said Haneef's sister and brother-in-law were travelling from Qatar to Nairobi. "Only after they reach there, we would get to know when the bodies of Jasna and Mehrin can be brought here. We are trying to expedite the process through the Indian Embassy," he said. Riya was travelling with her husband Joel and two children when the mishap occurred. "We received the news of the accident on Tuesday morning. The mortal remains are kept at a govt facility in Kenya now, awaiting further formalities," said Hussain Shafeek A, the local ward member. Both Riya and Joel have been working in the travel industry in Qatar for several years.

The deceased individuals from Kerala have been identified as Jasna, 29, from Venkitangu, near Guruvayur, and her daughter Ruhi Mehrin; Geetha Shoji, 58, hailing from Cherukol, near Mavelikkara; and Riya Puthanpurayil, 41, and her daughter Taira from Kanhirampara, Mannoor in Palakkad district. Several individuals sustained injuries in the accident, including Jasna's husband Muhammed Haneefa, Geetha's husband Shoji Isaac and her son Abel, and Riya's husband Joel and her son Travis. According to Joel, Geetha's elder son, his brother Abel suffered a compound fracture requiring surgery. Shoji Isaac, who works in Qatar, had not yet been informed of his wife's death. The High Commission of India in Nairobi expressed profound sorrow over the incident. 'We are deeply saddened by the tragic road accident on Ol Jororok-Nakuru Road in Nyandarua County, in which five Indian nationals have lost their lives," the High Commission posted on X. 'Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. We pray for the swift recovery of the injured.
