Who will win Stanley Cup? Picks, predictions for Panthers-Oilers Final
Who will win Stanley Cup? Picks, predictions for Panthers-Oilers Final Show Caption Hide Caption Are Edmonton Oilers Stanley Cup bound? Former NHLer weighs in Former NHL winger Riley Cote explains what he loves about this Edmonton Oilers team ahead of the Western Conference Finals. Sports Seriously The Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers are meeting for the second year in a row in the Stanley Cup Final. The Panthers won in seven games last season in a seesaw series, but the Oilers will have home-ice advantage this year. Florida defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning in five games, the Toronto Maple Leafs in seven games and the Carolina Hurricanes in five games. The Panthers lost the first two games against Toronto before rallying. Edmonton defeated the Los Angeles Kings in six games, the Vegas Golden Knights in five games and the Dallas Stars in five games. The Oilers lost the first two games against the Kings before rallying. Who will win this year's championship and the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP? USA TODAY Sports' Jason Anderson, Mike Brehm and Jace Evans weigh in. Stanley Cup Final predictions Jason Anderson: Oilers in 7. If, when the playoffs began, you told me we'd see a Stanley Cup rematch, this prediction would have probably been Panthers in five or six. Florida has talent on all lines, Sergei Bobrovsky is Sergei Bobrovsky and they have the edge in terms of being fine-tuned for playoff hockey. However, there's something to the Oilers right now that goes beyond "they're the team that has Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl." Edmonton held the Dallas Stars to 17 shots in an elimination game, showing top-to-bottom poise, and Mattias Ekholm came back back to bolster the defense as well. This Panthers team will be back, but for the first time since 1993, the Cup is heading to Canada. Conn Smythe winner: McDavid, Oilers Mike Brehm: Panthers in 6. The Oilers are better than they were last season, but the Panthers are also deeper than in 2024. They lack home-ice advantage for a fourth consecutive round, but they've done well without it, scoring five or more goals in their last five road games. As well as the Oilers are locking it down defensively, the Panthers' hard-forechecking style can force a team into mistakes. Looking back, my preseason pick for the Stanley Cup champion was the Oilers. I won't be surprised if they win, but Florida should become a repeat champion. Conn Smythe winner: Aleksander Barkov, Panthers Jace Evans: Oilers in 6. The Panthers are basically a perfect playoff team, so it won't be surprising if they repeat. But Edmonton has the two best players in this series in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl and I remain steadfast in my belief they will lead the Oilers to a championship. Still, the Oilers no longer rely just on them. The depth has come through these playoffs – though losing Zach Hyman hurts – and, even more important, the Oilers have shown incredible shutdown ability. That defensive play (that in theory could even improve with Mattias Ekholm back) will be the difference. Who will advance in NHL playoffs? Staff picks, predictions for conference finals
Who will advance in NHL playoffs? Staff picks, predictions for conference finals Show Caption Hide Caption Can the Florida Panthers really go back-to-back? With a dominant roster and playoff experience, the Panthers are poised to make a strong run at back-to-back Stanley Cup titles. Sports Pulse The defending champion Florida Panthers are in the Eastern Conference finals for the third season in a row and are looking to make a third consecutive trip to the Stanley Cup Final. The Dallas Stars are making their third consecutive appearance in the Western Conference finals, but they have come up short the last two seasons. The Panthers will play the Carolina Hurricanes in a rematch from 2023, which Florida won in a sweep. The Stars will play the Edmonton Oilers, who beat them in six games last season. Which two teams will reach the Stanley Cup Final? USA TODAY Sports weighs in with predictions for the Hurricanes-Panthers and Stars-Oilers series: Season series: 2-1 Panthers. Total goals: 13-6 Panthers. Jason Anderson: Hurricanes in 7. Carolina made light work of the Washington Capitals, and that may be the difference in a series that feels sure to be a marathon. Andrei Svechnikov's eight postseason goals are second only to Dallas' Mikko Rantanen (nine), but goalie Frederik Andersen's .937 save percentage might be the more important stat. The defending champs won't go down easily, but the Canes have delivered on all fronts through two rounds. Mike Brehm: Panthers in 6. The Hurricanes have lost 12 consecutive games in the conference final. They will end that streak, but it will be hard for them for them to knock off the defending champions. Carolina's Frederik Andersen is playing great, but Florida's Sergei Bobrovsky has given up only four goals in his last four games after a rough start to the second round. The Panthers have plenty of scoring depth, led by trade deadline acquisition Brad Marchand, who's playing on the third line. Jace Evans: Hurricanes in 7. The Hurricanes have generated very little discourse these playoffs, outside of discussions about whether the team is or isn't "boring." What they are is great, ripping through the Devils and Capitals in five games apiece with a relentless offense that throws an obscene number of shots toward the cage. If shots get through on the other end, they've often hit Frederik Andersen — the best goalie in these playoffs by far (1.36 GAA, .937 save percentage). Season series: 2-1 Stars. Total goals: 12-9 Stars Jason Anderson: Stars in 6. Both teams have players lighting it up on the offensive end in the postseason. Mikko Rantanen has 19 points for Dallas, while Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl have combined for 25 assists. It's at the other end where each team has had issues, with Edmonton's goalies combining for a .886 save percentage. The Stars have given up a whopping 408 shots in the playoffs, but Jake Oettinger has been up to the challenge, leading the league in some key underlying metrics for goaltenders. Expect plenty of goals in this series, but ultimately Dallas moves on. Mike Brehm: Stars in 7. The Oilers are deeper than they were last season, but so are the Stars, with the additions of forwards Mikko Rantanen and Mikael Granlund. Defenseman Thomas Harley took a big jump when Miro Heiskanen was hurt, and now Heiskanen is back. This series will go the distance because Oilers defenseman Mattias Ekholm will return at some point. The Stars get the edge in the series finale because they're at home, and coach Peter DeBoer is 9-0 in Game 7. Jace Evans: Oilers in 6. Seeking to erase last season's heartbreak, Edmonton has some team of destiny vibes. They looked completely on the ropes against the Kings in the first round only to rally in wild fashion and win six consecutive games after switching to Calvin Pickard in net. After Pickard was injured, Stuart Skinner got his job back and responded with two consecutive shutouts to oust the Golden Knights. You need some magic to win the Stanley Cup. It certainly feels like the Oilers have it. (And having Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl also helps.)

Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Florida Panthers predictions: Who will win Game 7?
Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Florida Panthers predictions: Who will win Game 7? Show Caption Hide Caption Can the Florida Panthers really go back-to-back? With a dominant roster and playoff experience, the Panthers are poised to make a strong run at back-to-back Stanley Cup titles. Sports Pulse The Toronto Maple Leafs have forced Game 7. Now they will try to change their history in Sunday night's decisive second-round game against the defending champion Florida Panthers. The Maple Leafs' six-game losing streak in Game 7s is the second-longest active one behind the Colorado Avalanche (seven). Toronto has lost its last two home Game 7s and hasn't reached the conference finals since 2002. The Panthers are 2-0 on road in Game 7s. They also won Game 7 at home last season to avoid a historic collapse against the Edmonton Oilers and win the Stanley Cup. Brad Marchand, whom the Panthers acquired at the trade deadline, is 4-0 in Game 7s against the Maple Leafs. How will Sunday night's game play out? USA TODAY Sports makes its Game 7 predictions: Maple Leafs vs. Panthers: Who will win Game 7? Jason Anderson: Panthers 3, Leafs 1; The Leafs have lost six consecutive Game 7s, and it's hard to imagine that streak ending against this Panthers team. Sergei Bobrovsky will step up his game, and the Eetu Luostarinen-Anton Lundell-Marchand line in particular will continue what has been a strong series. William Nylander will give Toronto fans hope, but look for Florida to grind out a road win. Mike Brehm: Panthers 2, Maple Leafs 1. The Maple Leafs played a perfect style for an elimination game to stay alive on Friday. But they've done that before and then lost in Game 7. First-year Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube (2-1 in Game 7s) has Toronto playing better, but Panthers coach Paul Maurice is 5-0. Florida's championship pedigree will win out. Jace Evans: Panthers 3, Maple Leafs 2. I will not be surprised if the Maple Leafs win this game. They're very good! But I can't pick them until I see this group do it. They are 0-5 in Game 7s in the Auston Matthews/Mitch Marner era (and lost another winner-take-all game in the bubble in 2020). Florida is about as battle-tested as you can be, the bulk of this group winning Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final last year. What time is Maple Leafs vs. Panthers Game 7? Game 7 of the Panthers-Maple Leafs series will start at 7:30 in Toronto. How to watch Maple Leafs vs. Panthers playoff game: TV, stream
