As Mass. considers generational ban on nicotine sales, what's been Brookline's experience?

'This way, you're getting everyone on the same level playing field,' he said. Massachusetts, which has long been at the forefront of tobacco restrictions nationally, is debating a statewide generational ban on tobacco sales, which could have potentially dramatic implications for both public health and businesses. The statewide bill's sponsor, state Senator Jason Lewis, said store owners always 'tell us that the sky is falling and that they can't survive' when restrictions on nicotine sales are considered, but the businesses have since remained afloat. 'It's a feature, not a bug, of the regulatory design,' Silbaugh said. Still, there are signs that Brookline's ban may have made a difference. Meanwhile, Reiss, Brookline's health chief, said enforcement of the generational ban has gone relatively smoothly. When the town sent underage shoppers undercover to 18 stores in 2022, four shops sold tobacco products to the buyers. Brookline fined them each $300. The next two times the town did that, there were zero underage sales, Reiss said. 'In order to have successful policies, we need to engage with the regulated community,' she said. 'There's probably mixed feelings about the policy out there, but making sure that they understand it before we go out and start enforcing ... that's a key strategy for me.' ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Metropolitan Police investigators have released the identity of a bicyclist struck and killed near the intersection of Gravois and Bamberger Tuesday night. Jason Lewis, 27, was a St. Peters resident. 'I feel for the family,' said Leland Ervin, a St. Louis resident familiar with that intersection. St. Louis police released surveillance video of a vehicle believed to be involved in the hit-and-run crash. A silver-colored Ford Edge had a red dealer's placard attached to the back. The SUV likely sustained significant front-end damage. Tipsters are urged to call CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS (8477). 'Our hearts go out to this family,' said Cindy Mense, Trailnet CEO. The nonprofit released a statement about Tuesday's crash: 'Gravois Avenue has consistently ranked among the most dangerous streets for pedestrians and remains one of the City's top crash corridors,' the nonprofit wrote following the fatal crash. Gravois is a state-maintained road; a spokesperson for MoDOT told FOX 2 the crash investigation is not completed, adding it's too soon to know if any maintenance issues should be addressed. A MoDOT Gravois Road project is tentatively slated for 2029. Bicyclist identified, driver wanted in deadly St. Louis hit-and-run crash

ST. LOUIS – Authorities have identified the victim and continue to search for a driver accused in a deadly St. Louis hit-and-run crash earlier this week. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department reports that Jason Lewis, 27, of St. Peters, Missouri, died in the collision. Police say the hit-and-run happened around 8 p.m. Tuesday near Gravois and Bamberger avenues in the Tower Grove South neighborhood. Missouri has a new richest billionaire, according to Forbes SLMPD is looking for at least one vehicle wanted in connection with the investigation. Police shared two photos of the vehicle suspected in the collision. The vehicle is described as a silver Ford Edge. No license plates. However, it does have a red dealer license plate placard attached to the rear of the vehicle. It is believed to have heavy front-end damage. According to an SLMPD crime summary report, the bicyclist was traveling west on Gravois in the bike lane and then turned south at Bamberger, across the westbound lanes of Gravois. During that turn, a gray SUV struck the bicyclist as he crossed into the eastbound lanes of Gravois. The driver of the SUV fled after the collision. The bicyclist landed in the westbound lanes of Gravois, where he was struck by three other vehicles. Police said drivers from two of those vehicles remained at the scene and are cooperating with the investigation.
