Springfield begins project to repair several roadways

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A road project to repair pavements on 12 roads across Springfield began on Monday. The city will resurface approximately 16 miles of Springfield roadways this spring as part of the Public Works overall pavement maintenance strategy. The bulk of the work will be on Grand Street, Campbell Avenue and Republic Road. Jason Saliba, an engineer with the city, says they tried to get started on this project last fall. 'It's part of a 240-day project. It started back in September of [2024]. We were only able to get a couple of the streets knocked out back then before the winter weather hit, and we had to stop operations,' said Saliba. Springfield unites to beautify historic district with Clean Green Some roads may be reduced to one lane at a time, but all businesses will remain open during the repavement times. The city expects these projects to be done by the end of May. 'This is a milling overlay, so we're not replacing the full depth of the roadway,' Saliba said. 'It's just a top inch and three-quarters. They'll grind that down and then lay a layer of asphalt on top of that.' The resurfacing effort costs nearly $4 million and is funded primarily through the 2024 surface transportation block grant, with a 20% match funded through the city's 1/8th-cent transportation sales tax.
