Trainer Jason Warren sets Benedetta task ahead of Stradbroke

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Victorian trainer Jason Warren will roll the dice and run his star mare Benedetta in Saturday's Kingsford Smith Cup before backing up in the Stradbroke Handicap just seven days later. The Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) was meant to be contested last Saturday but heavy rain at Eagle Farm forced several races to be rescheduled to Wednesday and this weekend. Warren admitted that the decision could hurt his Stradbroke hopes but with Brisbane's fickle weather this year, he didn't want to risk five-year-old Benedetta running on a heavy track at Eagle Farm on June 14 in Brisbane's premier race. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. 'I'd hate to wait a week and end up on a heavy track in the Stradbroke. 'We've got a horse ready to go and win a Group 1 and if we get a decent surface then I think we've got to take it. 'She's in great order, apart from having to spend four hours at the races last Saturday for no reason.' • Pride's plea: 'What about the Kingsford Smith Cup horses?' Two-time major winner Joliestar is the $3 favourite for the Kingsford Smith Cup ahead of Giga Kick ($5) and Benedetta ($8.50). William Reid Stakes runner-up Benedetta hasn't raced since finishing fourth as a $4.80 chance in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m) on May 17 behind Sunshine In Paris, Queensland warhorse Rothfire and Payline. The Joe Pride-trained veteran gelding Private Eye will bypass the Kingsford Smith Cup to focus on the 1400m Stradbroke. The 2021 Group 1 Epsom Handicap winner is a $21 chance in the Stradbroke, won last year by Stefi Magnetica. Last-start Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) winner Bosustow will contest the rescheduled Fred Best Classic (1350m) at Doomben on Wednesday, giving the Rob and Annabel Archibald-trained colt a 10-day lead-up to the Stradbroke, where he and Benedetta are $10 chances. 'Bloody oath I would': Warren out to spoil Schwarz's Doomben 10,000 farewell party

Victorian trainer Jason Warren is determined to spoil the farewell party for Group 1 Doomben 10,000 rival Schwarz, which will run his last race on Saturday before retiring to stud. Warren has revenge on his mind after his talented mare Benedetta finished a length behind Schwarz in the $1m Group 1 William Reid Stakes at The Valley on March 22. Benedetta is currently paying $6 to win the Doomben 10,000 (1200m) behind the Bjorn Baker-trained favourite Overpass ($3.50), Schwarz ($4.50) and Sunshine In Paris ($5). Sydney trainers John O'Shea and Tom Charlton must find a new jockey for Schwarz after Blake Shinn copped a 10-day suspension from Hollindale Stakes day on the Gold Coast last Saturday. Jamie Melham, fresh off her success in last Saturday's Group 1 The Goodwood in Adelaide with Reserve Bank, will ride five-year-old Benedetta in the Doomben 10,000. READ: Big bets review: Giga Kick a big result for bookies Schwarz, a son of Zoustar, was bought for $1.25m at the 2022 Magic Millions as part of the Rosemont Alliance syndicate. The four-year-old will go to stud as a two-time Group 1 champion if he can win the Doomben 10,000. Schwarz will retire to stud after Saturday's Doomben 10,000 Picture: George Sal 'He's going to run in the 10,000 and then go to stud,' O'Shea confirmed this week. Asked whether he would enjoy ruining Schwarz's farewell party, Warren replied: 'Bloody oath I will. They had their day in the sun (winning the William Reid Stakes). 'One of my biggest owners is Rosemont so I said to them 'you've managed to get that one under your belt but I won't be giving the next one away'. 'He (Schwarz) had the track in his favour at Moonee Valley (in the William Reid Stakes), it was a terrible track that day. Hopefully he's not getting that advantage this week.' Warren has Stradbroke Handicap ambitions for Benedetta on June 14 at Eagle Farm after his stable star finished eighth in Queensland's premier race over 1400m last year, won by Stefi Magnetica. That result came off the back of her victory in The Goodwood, with Melham on board, but Warren has taken a different tack this year, reducing the travel load on Benedetta. Trainer Jason Warren will line-up Benedetta in the Doomben 10,000 READ: Dream team to continue as Shinn makes tough suspension call 'She probably went to the Straddie one run too far last year but this time we're going there with fresh legs, which will definitely help,' the Mornington trainer said. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. 'Rather than going to Adelaide, which was quite an achievable Group 1 in the Sangster, we decided to go to Sydney so we were halfway to Brisbane.' Benedetta finished fifth at her last-start in the $1.5m Group 1 All Aged Stakes at Randwick, with Warren admitting 'we didn't think we could beat Jimmysstar but in saying that I thought her (Benedetta) run was enormous'. Norfolk fentanyl dealer sentenced for woman's overdose death

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A Norfolk fentanyl dealer was sentenced on April 3, 2025 to over 21 years in prison for selling drugs to a woman that caused her overdose death. According to court documents, the victim reached out to Jason Warren, aka Cuzzo, on July 14, 2022 to buy drugs. Warren gave the victim a mixture of heroin, fentanyl and Xylazine. The following day, Chesapeake Police responded to a report of a suspected drug overdose and found the woman who had met with Warren dead in her hotel room. Officers recovered narcotics, drug paraphernalia, a cellphone, and personal items belonging to the victim. Among the narcotics and paraphernalia were a plastic bag containing heroin and fentanyl, a bag containing heroin, fentanyl, and Xylazine residue, and a straw with heroin and fentanyl residue. The Chief Medical Examiner's report states that the woman's cause of death was acute fentanyl and heroin toxicity. On two occasions, Aug. 2 and Aug. 9, 2022, Warren distributed a mixture of fentanyl, heroin, and Xylazine to a confidential informant in Norfolk. On Aug. 14, 2022, law enforcement arrested Warren, who was in possession of the same mixture of drugs at the time, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney's Office. Many Spencer businesses to receive funds to replace items after flooding

SPENCER, Iowa (KCAU) – The Spencer Economic Development Corporation created a grant for businesses impacted by last year's flooding. The grant funds can be used for replacing inventory, equipment, and other necessities, though it doesn't cover structural damage. 'We wanted to support the businesses that chose to reopen and stay in Spencer,' vice president Jason Warren said. 'So for us, it was meaningful again to show that line of hope that we're bouncing back and that there's support here in the community for those businesses.' Currently, applications for the grant are closed. The Spencer Economic Development Corporation received 84 applications, and officials are currently reviewing them. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
