Oman's mediation role in US-Yemen deal hailed

CAIRO: The Arab Republic of Egypt has welcomed the efforts of the Sultanate of Oman, which resulted in reaching a ceasefire agreement in Yemen with the United States. In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Egypt expressed hope that this agreement would positively impact freedom of navigation in the Red Sea. Egypt also said that the coming period would see full adherence to the agreement, providing a constructive push towards ending the Israeli war on Gaza and advancing efforts to establish security and stability in the region. Meanwhile, Jassim Mohamed al Budaiwi, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), stated that the mediation efforts undertaken by the Sultanate of Oman between the United States and the relevant authorities in the Republic of Yemen — which led to a ceasefire agreement between the two sides — exemplify Oman's constructive and active role in supporting regional security and stability. He emphasised that the GCC states, through their wise and balanced policies, continue to work towards all measures that promote security and peace at both the regional and international levels. The GCC secretary-general also reiterated the importance of de-escalation to safeguard regional security and stability, as well as to uphold the right of maritime navigation in accordance with international law and the provisions of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Meanwhile, political consultations between the Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of Yemen were held on Wednesday in Muscat. The Omani side was headed by SShaikh Khalifa bin Ali al Harthy, Under-Secretary of the Foreign Ministry for Political Affairs, while the Yemeni side was led by Dr Mansour Ali Bajash, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs. During the session, the two sides reviewed bilateral relations and discussed means of enhancing cooperation in economic and trade exchange, as well as matters related to travel and communication between the two countries. The two sides also exchanged views on the latest developments in the Yemeni crisis and explored ways to resume the peace process, aiming for a just and comprehensive solution that serves the interests of all parties without exception. Additionally, they addressed regional issues of mutual concern. The meeting was attended by Ambassador Shaikh Ahmed bin Hashil al Maskari, Head of the GCC and Regional Neighbourhood Department at the Foreign Ministry, Dr Khaled Saleh Shateef, Yemen's accredited ambassador to Oman, and officials from both sides. - ONA
