Leopold's hosts their first ever ‘greening of the milkshake'

SAVANNAH. Ga. (WSAV) — Savannah is set to turn into a sea of emerald on Monday and an iconic local business is getting into the spirit. This year's St. Patrick's Day Parade Grand Marshal Jay Burke was on hand today for the 'greening of the milkshake.' This is the first year that the iconic ice cream shop has done their own spin on the Savannah tradition, turning their classic vanilla shake green, and they said they hope to continue the new tradition for many years to come. 'So, we had the grand marshal here greening milkshakes and it's a tradition that we're just starting,' Owner Stratton Leopold. 'So, we're just so excited and so honored to have him here and we look forward to continuing it.' Leopold's on Broughton Street will be serving up the green shakes until St. Patrick's Day on March 17. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — St. Peter the Apostle Catholic School held its 19th annual St. Patrick's Day Parade on Tuesday. Teh 2025 Savannah St. Patrick's Day Parade Grand Marshal Jay Burke and his aides lead the annual parade and judged the student float contest. Wynter Kelly, principal of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic School, says, 'Each class decorates a parade entry and competes for the grand prize of a huge bag of candy for the whole class to enjoy. They put a lot of time and effort and creativity into it and we're really proud of the floats that they make.' This year the Savannah Police Department`s Mounted Patrol and the Limerick Pipe and Drums Band from Ireland joined the parade. The parade started years ago as part of the PreK-4 students' study of transportation and incorporates the celebration of the patron saint of Ireland. Ireland is the homeland of former St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church pastors Father Patrick O'Brien and Monsignor James Costigan. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Parade officials help at annual Union Mission green breakfast

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – The events leading up to the Savannah St. Patrick's Day Parade continue – as this year's parade Grand Marshal and his aides take time to give back to some of our community's most underserved residents. It was a true Irish setting at the Grace House this morning – as clients of Union Mission were treated to scrambled eggs, biscuits, bacon, sausage and of course, green grits! The event featured bagpipes from Limerick as well. The Savannah St. Patrick's Day Parade committee served a special 'green' breakfast to Union Mission clients this morning. Officials shared that the event reflects the committee's commitment to giving back – honoring both their Irish heritage and faith. The breakfast aims to support Union Mission's ongoing efforts to provide shelter and services for the homeless in Savannah. Union Mission's Grace House offers beds for men experiencing homelessness, as well as transitional housing and support services. The organization helps clients with basic needs, mental health care, employment support, and more, with a goal to end homelessness. The Grace House serves 110 homeless individuals daily. 'I think we give back a lot throughout the whole year, but especially with St Patrick's Day, we want to emphasize that, you know, there's a lot of people that may be down on their luck and need a lift up or feel like they're loved. You know? And this is a way of us trying to help people out that are less fortunate than us,' said 2025 Parade Grand Marshal Jay Burke. The Union Mission was established in 1947. Union Mission's president, Michael Traynor, welcomed around ten members of the St. Patrick's executive committee early Tuesday morning at 7 a.m. Traynor shared some updated information on Union Mission's current achievements, including serving 400 people per night at all their locations all the way up to Statesboro. Grace House has 72 beds, and the program has been successful in helping 78% of men working with the program to obtain housing. Union Mission plans to create a transitional program for women as well to help boost the percentage for their demographic. Traynor shared that the green breakfast is a tradition that will continue for many years to come. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Celtic Cross ceremony: the Sunday before Saint Patrick's Day tradition in Savannah

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – It's a Sunday before Saint Patrick's Day tradition – starting the morning with mass at St. Johns Basilica Cathedral and ending with the Celtic Cross ceremony at Emmett Park. 'It's where we honor our past, present and future Irishmen. The ones that have come before and the ones like my children that are being raised now. ' It's a ceremony that's usually filled with Irish-Catholic families marching in celebration toward Emmett Park to watch as the traditional wreath is mounted in front of the Celtic Cross monument. The weather this year left those celebrations indoors. But Grand Marshal, Jay Burke, and members of the Saint Patrick's Day committee ignored the rain and still marched to the monument to honor the Irish-Catholic heritage by lying the wreath. 'It's a tradition. We do this to honor our ancestors. It started in '83. And it's one of those things that we look forward to every year,' said Burke. It's also a tradition that Burke says his father would thank him for carrying out. 'I was born and raised a catholic and I was fortunate to go to a catholic school and grammar school and high school. And I love my heritage. If it wasn't for him, you know, growing up around town, this day probably wouldn't be possible.' Now a week away from Saint Patrick's Day, Burke said the momentum is really starting to pick up. With only one more traditional ceremony before the big parade, Burke is sad for it to be nearing its close but can't wait for anyone – no matter Catholic, Irish, or whatever religion or culture folks align with – to celebrate the holiday with them. 'Like they say, everyone's Irish on Saint Patrick's Day,' said Burke. 'All our families come together. All cultures come together. And it's a great feeling because Savannah is such a warm, loving place to live and grow up.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
