Five men sentenced to 10 years in prison for drug trafficking
A Special Court here has convicted and sentenced five persons to 10 years in prison for drug trafficking.
According to Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), on January 8, 2019, its officer in Chennai intercepted two vehicles, one of which was a pilot and the other carrying a contraband, at Karanodai Toll Plaza, Chennai, and recovered a total of 107.2 Kg ganja from the possession of five individuals - Eswaran, Jayaprabhu who were the masterminds, Jayachandran (middleman), Surulivel and Ramesh (carriers). The contraband under recovery had been sourced by the accused from the Andhra-Odisha border region and was intended to be smuggled out to Sri Lanka. They were booked under the provisions of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Five persons were remanded to judicial custody and tried before 1st Additional Special Court for NDPS Act Cases. On Thursday, the court convicted all five accused in the case and sentenced each to rigorous imprisonment for 10 years, in addition to imposing a fine of ₹1,00,000 on each.
