Four-peat: Jayman Built wins national design excellence award
Alberta continues to dominate headlines by winning multiple awards in the 2025 Canadian Home Builders' Association (CHBA) National Awards for Housing Excellence held May 15 in Victoria, B.C. Article content Article content Prolific production builder Jayman Built and premier custom home builder/renovator Vicky's Homes were front runners in the annual national competition held on Vancouver Island during CHBA's National Home Building Week. With an unprecedented 1,000 entries covering four dozen building, renovating, design, community development and marketing categories, 12 Alberta-based companies won 20 of those 48 categories plus two of the three prestigious aggregate awards for excellence. Article content Article content Awards organizer and CHBA director of marketing and communications, Natasha Rombough, said Alberta companies have had a lot of success on the national stage in recent years, with projects that are clearly hitting the mark among the nearly 200 judges from across the country. Article content Article content 'From appealing home designs and functionality, both for new homes and renovations, to livable communities, residents of Alberta have a lot of great choices when it comes to their housing,' she said. Article content Jayman, 2025 Building Industry and Land Development (BILD) Calgary Region large volume Builder of the Year, kicked off its successful awards evening by winning Best Short Video for The Streams of Lake Mahogany – Estate Living. Then, moving on to the New Home awards, Jayman received two Best New Low-Rise Home awards for the Benjam Villa (less than 1,500 square feet) and The Streams of Mahogany Brook model (1,500 to 1,800 sq. ft.) in Edmonton and Calgary, respectively. The builder's third New Home award was for Best Detached Production Home 2,401 to 2,800 sq. ft. for the Bentley 24, a model it launched in 2024. It's the fourth year in a row that Jayman, led by chairman and CEO Jay Westman, has received the nation's top CHBA prize either shared or alone. In 2024, Douglas Homes of Calgary split the spotlight with Jayman. Article content 'Winning the Design Excellence Award four years running is certainly a first for the competition, and a huge accomplishment. Clearly, their homes have national appeal among industry peers and are excelling in the areas of exterior and interior design, innovation, the functionality of their floor plans, and special features, which are the criteria the judges evaluate for all new homes,' Rombough said. Article content The Renovation Excellence Award went to Vicky's Homes, an Edmonton company founded more than 20 years ago by Vicky Kujundzic. Vicky's scored high in by winning four out of the 12 awards in the renovation category, all for the same home. Their Mid-Century Modern project nabbed Best Kitchen Renovation over $100,000, Best Exterior Renovation, Best Single Room Renovation and Best Whole Home Renovation over $800,000. Vicky's was also presented a marketing award for this mega makeover, winning Best Interior Decorating (Model/Showhome). With more than 6,000 sq. ft. of living space, this renovation recently picked up three local awards at the BILD Edmonton Metro Awards of Excellence.

Breath of fresh air: home builders deliver on indoor-outdoor spaces
Article content An airy and open indoor-outdoor floor plan with ample outdoor space seems to be the trend for 2025, say Calgary's top single-family builders. Article content Article content 'There has really been a shift towards more intimate indoor-outdoor spaces, especially in the inner-city where people are essentially laminated to their neighbour,' says Fatima Nasser, president and co-founder with her husband, Moe Abbdullah, of Urban Indigo Fine Homes. 'We've also noticed that there has been a huge demand for detached single-family homes with larger backyards.' Article content Article content The team at Jayman Built would agree. Stephanie Myers, vice-president single family at Jayman Built, says that Jayman's designs are really focusing on family-friendly living and third-floor development with outdoor space also in big demand. She notes that the Calgary market has balanced out over the past six months, which bodes well for sussing out the perfect home and lot. Article content Article content 'We're seeing healthy sales numbers in the first quarter. So, there's a lot of opportunity for those looking to get into the market and given the balance market, it is also a good time for those looking to make a move up,' says Myers. Article content Both Urban Indigo Fine Homes and Jayman Built recently won top accolades at the 2024 Building Industry and Land Development Association Calgary Region Awards, each picking up the coveted Grand Award for Single Family Builder of the Year. Urban Indigo stepped up to take Small Volume Single Family Builder of the Year, while Jayman Built earned Large Volume Single Family Builder of the Year. A Grand Award is a top-achiever award of distinction presented in seven categories. Jayman Built and Urban Indigo Fine Homes have each worn the crown multiple times. 'The commitment that the Jayman team has made with floor plans and model evolution, show home designs, sales initiatives and overall customer experience has pulled industry recognition and led to some very happy homeowners. Winning the Builder of the Year award is an honour. It recognizes the dedication, innovation and craftsmanship that we bring to every home.' Article content Jayman Built not only received a Grand Award this year, but also collected 17 finalist nods and nine additional category wins, including Best New Single Family Home Award for its Bentley 24-2 design in the category $641,000 to $690,000. With its attention to detail and practical and elegant floor plan, the Bentley 24-2, a four-bedroom, 2,411-sq.-ft., three-storey home, features multiple floor plan options including a main floor bedroom with ensuite, expanded dining room or kitchen, and a flex space or home office. One of the model's most popular features is the third-floor loft space with a large bedroom, three-piece bathroom, large bonus room and an ample outdoor terrace. Additionally, the lower-level can be developed into a secondary suite with a separate entrance, a feature that Myers says is also at the top of many buyers' wish lists.

Jayman Built opens 4 new show homes in Heartwood
Article content The 2024 Builder of the Year is set to open four bespoke show homes in the new community of Heartwood in southeast Calgary. Article content Jayman Built, fresh off back-to-back wins as the best single-family builder in the Building Industry and Land Development Calgary Region (BILDCR) Awards, will officially unlock the doors of two laned and two duplex models with a celebration on May 3. Article content Article content 'All four show home models will debut exclusively in Heartwood. These are all new additions to Jayman's portfolio and no other show homes of them are available,' says Jayman sales manager Michael Klassen. Article content Article content Edmonton-based Rohit Communities broke ground on the 203-acre development located east of 52nd Street S.E. near the South Health Campus Hospital in May 2024. Article content 'While Jayman and Rohit have collaborated previously in Edmonton, this marks the first time working together in a Calgary community, and we're excited about the partnership. Heartwood offers an incredible opportunity to create something special together,' he says. Article content Jayman's goal in designing the new models was to increase affordability by making them smaller without compromising on features buyers want most. Those include high-demand options like side entrances, main-floor bedrooms and legal suites. Article content Article content 'Two-car garage options are also available. We've created a diverse range of options tailored to fit a mix of homesite types such as wide lots and park-facing homesites,' he says. Article content The laned homes are the Yoho 22 with 1,790 square feet and the Aspen 20 with 1,535 sq. ft. Each has three bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and showcase a developed basement suite option. The legal suite in the Yoho has a living room, kitchen, bathroom, laundry closet and two bedrooms while the fully equipped Aspen has one-bedroom floor plan with a rec room and a wet bar.
