Fire in Provo near river caused by Cottonwood fluff

PROVO, Utah () — An unexpected turn of events happened when a Provo resident tried to get rid of Cottonwood fluff in his yard by lighting it on fire, but the fire spread damaging several sheds and trees near the home. 'It's just a dangerous situation when you try to mitigate your cottonwood duff using fire or any sort of flammable,' Jeanie Atherton, a captain with Provo Fire, said. Atherton said they often see these kinds of fires during the summer. Study aims to address transportation barriers between east, west Salt Lake 'The cottonwood duff will come off trees and accumulate on lawns, and it covers to where you can't even see the grass,' Atherton said. 'People have seen videos where people use fire to get rid of it very quickly. They think it's an easy way to do it. The problem is you can't control it, and it's very unsafe, because you have no control of how fast it's going to burn or where it's going to go.' Instead of burning the cottonwood fluff, she suggested something else. 'Use a lawnmower or use a rake and rake it up or a leaf blower into piles and bag it up and then dispose of it,' Atherton said. Fire crews responded quickly and were able to extinguish the fire. This is an ongoing investigation.
