6 Cars That Are Worth Saving Your Money Until Next Year To Buy
Visions of the future in television, movies and books have predicted that at some point, flying cars will be a reality. That future is still light years away, but you can still get some trailblazing vehicles starting in 2026. Just make sure you are saving up now so you can be among the first behind the wheel next year. I'm a Car Expert: Learn More: Here are six cars worth saving your money until next year to buy, according to a sneak peek of what's in store in 2026 from Car and Driver. This car of the future is one that comes early, with the 2025 Jeep Recon EV debuting later this year. Details such as the starting price, driving range, battery size and power output have yet to be released, but expect to pay between $60,000 and $80,000 to get behind this advancement in EV driving capabilities. Consider This: Another early special set to hit the market later this year is the 2025 Chevy Corvette SUV. That's right, Chevy has found a symbiosis between their classic Corvette and a sports utility vehicle. This mashup is certain to turn heads, and come with a price tag ranging from $60,000 to $80,000. There has never been a Mustang like the Raptor, a car that feels like it is simultaneously a throwback to the past and ahead of its time. Sure to be a one of a kind car, for better or worse, the limited-run production is set to roll out early next year for an estimated $90,000. Last year, Kia sold 115,504 Tellurides in the United States, so it only makes sense they would follow up that success with the 2026 model. While the manufacturer plans to keep everything drivers love about the Telluride, the new feature of a newly available hybrid powertrain is surely to set the price range at the low end of $60,000. Next year, Rivian is planning to release a sports utility vehicle that hones in on one key feature: comfortable driving on a range of 300 miles or more. Drivers of the latest R2 can select one of three powertrains for their on-road experience: single-motor rear-wheel-drive, dual-motor all-wheel-drive, and a performance-focused tri-motor all-wheel-drive setup. Expect all that for under $50,000 when the SUV hits the market sometime in 2026. Toyota is known as an industry innovator, which is why hopes are high for the 2027 MR2, a mid-engine two-seater that is rumored to be electric and planned to be released some time in 2026. While the MR2 comes with all the bells and whistles you'd want in a sports car, it is estimated to debut for under $60,000. Jeep Recon EV Shown for the First Time Sans Doors, Sporting New Grille
The 2025 has been revealed undisguised for the first time on the brand's website. The photos show the electric off-roader without doors and wearing a new version of Jeep's seven-slot grille. We're still waiting for the Recon EV to be officially revealed, which will happen before it goes on sale sometime in late 2025. If you weren't one of the 126 million people who caught a glimpse of the new Jeep Recon EV in the commercial that aired during last week's Super Bowl, here's your chance. While we've already seen digitally rendered images of the forthcoming all-electric off-roader and captured spy photos of a partially disguised test mule roaming public roads, the new photos Jeep posted on its consumer site are our first chance to see a fully undisguised version of the Recon EV, albeit one still in pre-production form. As with the Jeep Wrangler, the Recon's doors are removable. The EV doesn't have solid front and rear axles and traditional four-wheel drive, but it's expected to have dual electric motors that provide four-wheel traction. That should be aided on loose surfaces with all-terrain tires, and the Recon's short overhangs and elevated ride height should provide useful clearance off-road. Although the photos on Jeep's website don't provide a glimpse of the interior, our spy shots showed a space that mixes digital displays with a passenger-side grab handle, a lockable center console, and buttons that act as door handles. Along with a rear-mounted spare tire and roof rails, Jeep's photos interestingly show red front and rear recovery hooks. Those are typically blue on the brand's electrified models (see the plug-in-hybrid Grand Cherokee and Wrangler 4xe). The tow hooks were also blue on the prototype Recon EV we spotted in the wild. It's unclear if the color change is simply a red herring, a shift away from blue identifying EVs, or perhaps a reference to the report that Jeep could offer the Recon with gas and hybrid powertrains alongside its electric one. Either way, we should find out more details in the coming months, as Jeep's website says the Recon EV is coming sometime in late 2025. Jeep Quietly Gives Us Our First Good Look at the 2026 Recon EV
The production debut of the highly anticipated Jeep Recon EV is around the corner, and to highlight its upcoming new electric off-roader, Stellantis has just added a new page to the brand's website dedicated to the SUV. Unlike previous concept images, these new photos highlight a revised pre-production machine, complete with the styling and many features we can expect to see when it lands on dealer lots. Here's what we've learned from the new website. The Jeep Recon EV, which made a cameo in the brand's Harrison Ford-starring Super BOwl ad, will arrive as an electric alternative to the brand-defining Wrangler lineup, packing a strong focus on off-road capability. The SUV is underpinned by the STLA Large platform, also shared with the Jeep Wagoneer S models. Like that 4x4, expect a dual-motor powertrain to bring loads of traction and power. In the electric Wagoneer, the Jeep motors are good for 600 hp and 617 lb-ft; output could vary in the new model line, but that sort of torque should help make the Recon quite a rock-crawler. The STLA Large platform supports both 400- and 800-volt electric architecture, though we have no word yet as to which the Recon will employ. We do know the SUV will forgo Jeep's formidable solid-axle setup for independent suspension all around, however. Changes to the Recon seen here versus the concept version are minor, but suggest Jeep is reworking some of its branding choices. The concept's blue tow hooks, shared with the current 4Xe lineup, have been swapped out for more traditional red units. The "Moab" graphics have also been removed from this particular model, though that trim is still slated to join the lineup. While the automaker hasn't shared specific timing for the sales debut of the Recon EV, the truck is slated to hit dealers later this year. That said, Recon production is reportedly slated to kick off at the automaker's Toluca Assembly Plant in Mexico on February 24. That means the automaker should hopefully have time to build up some stock and iron out any issues before these EVs start popping up on your local trails. Stellantis Patents EV-Driven Winch, Potentially for Future EV Jeeps
Stellantis has been granted a new patent for an integrated winch system to be included on future electric vehicles. The patent specifically refers to an integrated winch system powered by the high-voltage battery system and an electric drive motor already in the EV. The approved design could foreshadow available options on future off-road-oriented models, such as the upcoming . Stellantis was just granted a patent for a new technology we think will become a mainstay of future Jeep EVs. The patent covers an integrated winch system designed to be included on future electric vehicles. Originally reported by Mopar Insiders, the patent was filed on January 25, 2024, and was finally granted on January 21, 2025. It's not uncommon to find off-roading vehicles equipped with a winch system, though they're nearly always a bumper-mounted electric system added after production. This new patent details an integrated winch that sources its power directly from the high-voltage battery and electric drive motors already equipped to the car. That patent does not specifically state as much, but the door is open to having a front and rear winch or a combination of both. The drive motor adds a differential that, when activated, diverts torque from the front or rear axles and redirects it through a planetary gear set to drive the winch spool. The patent doesn't detail the exact location of the onboard winch, but rather, details the technology. The beauty of the patent design is that by sourcing its power from an existing traction motor it eliminates the need for a separate winch motor. While some who appreciate the rugged aesthetic of a bumper-mounted winch may balk at the idea of hiding it, others will appreciate the integrated design shown in the patent. We doubt the technology will arrive with the upcoming Jeep Recon EV, but we wouldn't be surprised to see it added to the model in its first facelift.
