North Sioux City meeting: South Dakota set to get millions for disaster recovery

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. (KCAU) — Wednesday night, members of the North Sioux City community gathered to learn more about how the federal disaster relief funding will work. 'When you look at this program in totality, I think there are a lot of regulations with it as with all grant money, but we want to try and be able to utilize this money within the regulations but be able to allow our city to leverage other assets,' said North Sioux City City Administrator Jeff Dooley. State officials say the money can be used for long-term recovery projects. Residents were able to talk with South Dakota authorities in-person about what the funds would mean for their community. Tuition increases proposed for all 3 Iowa universities 'Let's figure out a way to make it so that we all benefit. We want to be here and establish a good relationship to get to know you. We hope you get to know us a little bit, and we understand that this has been a difficult time for you, so we want to try to be good partners as we move forward,' said Governor's Office of Economic Development Deputy Commissioner Joe Fiala. Petition concerning North Sioux City development won't be on April special election ballots

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — A petition concerning the planned Union Crossing residential and commercial development in North Sioux City will not be on the ballot for the April 8 special election. The decision comes from the city attorney and was shared with residents Thursday night at a special meeting of the North Sioux City City Council. NAIA women's basketball tournament brings thousands of fans to Sioux City City leadership say the petition was denied because it was missing a date when it was circulated for signatures. Wednesday was the deadline to have petitions submitted for the April 8 election, meaning it's too late now to correct the issue. The petition opposed the use of tax increment financing, or 'TIF,' for the upcoming development, which was announced last year and recently broke ground. City Administrator Jeff Dooley says holding the special council meeting wasn't a requirement. 'No action was taken, but I think the main purpose of the meeting was to make sure that everybody knew why it [the petition] was being rejected and it was rejected in a public setting,' he said. 'That's not typically required, but the council wanted to do that so that everybody knew what the situation was and it was just an error.' Dooley adds, he expects developers to move forward with the Union Crossing project this spring. Disaster proclamation issued for 5 Iowa counties One of the petitioners, Dennis Haag, told KCAU he understands why the petition was denied, but still thinks the public should have had a voice in the use of TIF for the development. 'My concern is that I just want the public to have a voice; that's all,' he said. 'And when you have a TIF of this dollar amount, I feel that it should always go to a public vote and let the community decide.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
