Resources for Tampa Bay seniors, others needing hurricane evacuation help

Among the Tampa Bay locals who were killed during last year's historic hurricane season, many shared a tragic trait in common: They were over 60 years old. Most lived in mandatory evacuation zones but didn't leave. Some also had mobility issues, such as needing walkers to get around. Jeff Johnson, the state director for AARP Florida, which advocates for people over the age of 50, said that in addition to physical hurdles, older adults also may have a harder time, emotionally, leaving their homes and not knowing what it'll look like when they come back. After living somewhere for decades, possibly filled with items that represent friends and family who have passed away, the process can be difficult. But it's important to heed mandatory evacuation calls. Johnson noted that even if residents think they're safe from storm surge on an upper floor of a condo high-rise, they need to consider what it would be like to live there without any power or water for days, including if the elevators go out in tall buildings. Some people of all ages might need help evacuating, too, because they lack transportation or the financial means to book a hotel room. For people who need help evacuating ahead of a hurricane, there are resources available. Residents who rely on medication, oxygen or power can add their names to the state's special needs registry before a hurricane looms. That registry, run by the Florida Department of Health in coordination with county governments, is at Pinellas County: County officials encourage residents with medical needs, who lack transportation, or need help walking or getting out of bed to register for the county's special needs program. Residents can ask their home health care provider about registering or do so online at You can also request a form by calling Pinellas County Emergency Management at 727-464-3800. Hillsborough County: Special needs residents should register at the state health department website above, according to county officials. The Hillsborough County Hurricane Evacuation Assessment Tool at includes real-time shelter locations, evacuation zones and HART bus evacuation routes. For assistance, the county's main information line is 813-272-5900. Residents can also call the storm information line when emergency staff are activated: 833-427-8676. Pasco County: Residents with special needs can find information on registering, plus a short video on how to register, at Kevin Guthrie, the director of Florida's Division of Emergency Management, said residents can also call 800-729-3413 with questions on evacuation orders or for assistance getting out. Times staff writer Justin Garcia and Times/Herald staff writer Romy Ellenbogen contributed to this report. A version of this story was previously published in the Tampa Bay Times. Beloved St. Paul pharmacy shutting down after 100+ years in business

The Brief West Seventh Pharmacy in St. Paul will close on June 30. The pharmacy opened in 1915, a year after World War I started. The owner cited rising costs, difficulty finding help and a desire to retire as factors in his decision. ST. PAUL, Minn. (FOX 9) - West Seventh Pharmacy in St. Paul will shut down on June 30, ending its century-long run as a community staple. What we know West Seventh Pharmacy, which opened three years after the Titanic sank, will close at the end of June. Jeff Johnson, the pharmacist who owns it, said he made the decision to close for a variety of reasons, including rising costs, trouble finding help and a desire to retire and travel. What they're saying In an interview on Friday, Johnson was overcome with emotion as he discussed what he called "the hardest decision I've ever made." "You don't want to be that guy who has to close the store," he said, reflecting on multiple generations of ownership across several families. "I don't feel bad for myself; I feel bad for the community, and that's the hard part." Customers expressed sadness when they saw the notice posted on the front door. Donna Kloos, a longtime customer, said the pharmacy had a small-town charm that cannot be matched by large chains. "I walk in – they say, 'Oh, hi, Donna,'" she recalled. "Now it's time to find someplace else." Big picture view In recent years, independent pharmacies have slowly disappeared in the metro and elsewhere. In 2012, there were 124 independent drug stores in the metro. By 2023, only 48 of them remained. Independent pharmacies closing Independent pharmacies often struggle to compete with their chain counterparts. They are not always reimbursed at the same rates, which makes it difficult to profit. In addition, the Federal Trade Commission blamed prescription drug middlemen for setting "unfair" prices that make it difficult for smaller pharmacies to compete. What's next West Seventh Pharmacy will close on June 30.

New Minnesota law unleashes help for volunteer service dog trainers

A new state law aims to clear the way for more Minnesotans to step up to train service dogs. Why it matters: These crucial canine companions make a major difference for people with disabilities. The big picture: Groups that train service dogs say one of their biggest challenges is finding volunteers who are willing and able to take on the work of raising and socializing the animals. One barrier, Can Do Canines executive director Jeff Johnson says, was that laws protecting people with service dogs from housing discrimination didn't apply to the trainers. How it works: The bipawtisan legislation, signed into law by Gov. Tim Walz Thursday, limits landlords and HOAs from placing restrictions or extra charges on residents who are training an animal through an accredited organization. The new law applies to both volunteers and paid trainers. What they're saying: Johnson, a former Hennepin County commissioner and gubernatorial candidate, told reporters that the nonprofit has encountered eight to 10 situations in recent years in which people who wanted to help were unable to because of residential rules. "My guess is there are a lot more people out there who would never have brought it up," he said. "This will help." The bottom line: Lydia Roseth, a student at Hamline University, says she has been able to take on more academically and socially since receiving her service dog, Flint, from Can Do Canines in February.
