SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – From processed grains of whole wheat, rice flour, and sugar, these boxes can be found in most kitchen cabinets or on top of the fridge… cereal.
Friday is National Cereal Day, and whether you put your cereal in the bowl first or your milk in first, there is no wrong answer. It just depends on who you ask.
A study was conducted by VegasInsider using Google Keyword Planner that compiled a list of the top 12 popular cereal brands searched in the last year across the country. The analysis also revealed the top searched cereals in Massachusetts.
Food you should eat to boost your mood
The most popular cereal in the U.S. overall, including Massachusetts, is Cheerios. General Mills started manufacturing this cereal in 1941 called 'CheeriOats.' Due to a claim from Quaker Oats who held the rights to use the term 'oats,' the name was shortened to 'Cheerios' in 1945. They now have 15 different flavors to choose from including 'Honey Nut Cheerios.'
According to the Associated Press, General Mills and other food producers had raised prices to offset rising inflation, resulting in profit margin boosts for many of them. Now they are among food producers trimming some prices to ease the squeeze on consumers.
'We did anticipate that might be the case as we see consumers taking value,' said General Mills CEO Jeffrey L. Harmening in a call with analysts. 'Consumers are still economically stressed, so that played out the way we thought.'
Today, the largest cereal brand in the United States, according to research by Zippia, is Cheerios, with a revenue of $18.126 billion and 139.1 million boxes sold in 2021.
