Kota Kinabalu: Federal Agriculture and Food Security Deputy Minister Datuk Arthur Kurup (pic) expressed concern that the Ikan Salarong (Pangasius hypophthalmus) could face extinction without proper conservation measures. The fish species, native to the Pegalungan community in Pensiangan, where is Member of Parliament, is renowned for its superior taste and considered better than the well-known Patin.

'As fisheries fall under my Ministry, I am working to implement conservation efforts to preserve this species. 'We hope it can eventually become a heritage fish, which will help elevate the community here and improve their livelihood in the long run,' Arthur said. Kurup said the Department of Fisheries is spearheading initial conservation efforts, while the Government is also working on upgrading jetties around areas like Salong, Pegalungan and some areas in Pensiangan, to provide better access to the river.
