The suspect in the recent knife attack at Hamburg's central train station had been known to police since 2021 as a person with "clear signs of mental illness," German officials said on Sunday. A German national, the suspect was detained on Friday evening after allegedly stabbing people at random at the busy transport hub, injuring 18 people. The 39-year-old woman, who hails from the northern state of Lower Saxony, was released from a psychiatric hospital only the day before the stabbing. On Sunday a spokeswoman for prosecutors told dpa, the suspect admitted to the act in front of a magistrate. Suspect in psychiatric care for three weeks in May According to the Lower Saxony ministry, police initiated criminal proceedings against the woman in several cases last year. "She appeared at police stations several times, showing clear signs of mental illness," a spokesman for the Health Ministry in the state of Lower Saxony said. Following an incident at the beginning of May this year, a court ordered her to be placed in the Cuxhaven psychiatric hospital, where she received treatment for three weeks. She had been treated in a psychiatric institution in the northern German city of Cuxhaven for three weeks after she was found in a state of helplessness in early May, the spokesman said. Authorities did not comment on the nature of her illness, citing privacy concerns and medical confidentiality. However, before patients are released from a psychiatric ward, doctors have to consider whether they could pose a danger to themselves or others. Authorities in Lower Saxony say there was no indication that the suspect may have used a knife in previous incidents, nor does she have a firearms licence. Charges of attempted manslaughter brought A magistrate ordered the woman to be placed in psychiatric care after she was detained following the stabbing on Friday. She is accused of 15 cases of attempted manslaughter combined with grievous bodily harm. The charges relate to the people who were directly injured with the knife and suffered cuts or stab wounds of varying severity, according to police. The remaining victims suffered other injuries, due to shock or falls. Three women aged 24, 52 and 85, as well as a 24-year-old man, were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after the attack. Police said in an update on Saturday that they were all stable. The bodies of the five skiers were found by rescue workers in the mountains near Zermatt, a luxury resort in southwestern Switzerland. Investigators are working to identify them. Five skiers were found dead near Switzerland's Rimpfischhorn mountain on Sunday, the prosecutors' office in Canton Valais said in a statement. The prosecutors said that the identities of the five have not yet been confirmed and that further investigations have been opened. What do we know about the incident? Emergency services had been alerted a day earlier to some abandoned skis at an altitude of about 4,000 meters. A helicopter was sent to survey the area in the mountains near Zermatt, a luxury resort in southwestern Switzerland. After conducting air and ground searches of the area, rescue workers found the bodies near the Adlergletscher glacier, close to the border with northern Italy.
