Canada will host the final two games of the series in December, USA Hockey said in statement. Canada lost the first three games of best-of-seven before winning four straight to take it in both 2023 and 2024. Ottawa Charge ready for PWHL playoffs after strong five-game finish and outpouring of support
Aside from one hiccup, the Ottawa Charge has done a good job of containing 'The GOAT' this season. Article content Article content Marie-Philip Poulin did show off her immense talent when she converted three of her five shots for a hat-trick in the Montreal Victoire's 4-1 victory over the Charge on Jan. 29 at Place Bell in Laval. Article content But Poulin, widely considered the best women's hockey player on the planet, had just one goal and one assist in the other five games between the teams. Article content Article content Keeping Poulin off the board, which the Charge did on three occasions, would certainly help Ottawa get off to a good start when the rivals square off in Game 1 of their best-of-five, opening round PWHL playoff series Thursday night at Place Bell. Article content Article content Poulin notched a pair of goals, the first at the 11-second mark of the opening period, when the Victorie clinched top spot with a 3-2 victory over the New York Sirens last Saturday. Article content That gave her a league-leading 19 on the season and 29 over her 51-game PWHL career. Poulin scored just once on 18 shots when Montreal was swept by Boston in last season's playoffs. Article content Along with being key members of Canada's national team, Poulin, her spouse Laura Stacey, and Jennifer Gardiner combined for 35 of Montreal's 77 goals while forming one of, if not the best lines in the PWHL. Article content Tasked with keeping that unit in check as much as possible over the next five games will be Ottawa's shutdown line, which consists of Team Canada veteran Emily Clark and Americans Gabbie Hughes and Mannon McMahon. Having the last line change in the final two meetings of the season at TD Place, Ottawa held Montreal to just three goals, with only one (by Stacey) coming from the big line. Article content Article content 'Obviously, we've played with and against a lot of these girls, some of us for a decade now, so obviously there's a lot of familiarity,' said Clark, who scored two goals in Ottawa's 3-1 victory at TD Place over Montreal in February, when asked if there's a 'book' on how to play against the Victoire's top performers. 'But yeah, we have coaches and people that specialize in those areas for a reason. We have Pierre (Groulx), our goalie coach, who will prep us with what we need to know. Same with our 'D' coach and special teams coach. We'll be prepared for them. Article content Article content 'We played them six times (in the season) and we get to play them. It's pretty cool. I've never played in a series before. So to be able to play a game and be able to go back to the drawing board and readjust, that's really fun. So I'm excited for that.' Article content 'The playoffs are almost like another season, so we have to take it one game at a time,' said forward Alexa Vasko, who noted the team has been 'buzzing' at practice this week. 'It's five games, anything can happen. So whatever happens in Game 1, we move on to Game 2.

Canada starts title defense at women's worlds by shutting out Finland, Sweden and Japan also win
Associated Press CESKE BUDEJOVICE, Czech Republic (AP) — Canada launched its title defense at the women's hockey world championships by cruising past Finland 5-0 on Thursday. Jennifer Gardiner scored twice and added an assist, Ella Shelton had a goal and an assist while captain Marie-Philip Poulin and Emma Maltais also scored a goal apiece in the Group A game. Canada goaltender Kristen Campbell made 24 saves for the shutout. Seeking its 14th title, Gardiner opened the scoring 6:02 into the first period from the left circle and Canada kept steadily increasing its lead. It was already 4-0 up when Gardiner claimed her second 18 seconds into the second period from a tight angel, forcing Finland to pull goaltender Emilia Kyrkko. 'You couldn't have told me this would happen in my wildest dreams,' said Gardiner about her tournament debut. Still in the opening period, Shelton wristed a shot into the roof of the net and Poulin was fed by Gardiner with a pass from behind the goal to make it 3-0. It was the second straight defeat for Finland, last year's bronze medalist, after a 7-1 loss to the United States on Wednesday, a sign of the gap between the two favorites for the championships and the rest of the field. Canada next plays Switzerland on Friday. Earlier, Sweden fought hard to overcome newcomer Hungary 2-0 for a second win at the tournament. Linnea Johansson broke the deadlock late in the middle period and had an assist for the second goal netted by Lina Ljungblom in the third period when the Hungarians outshot the Swedes 11-6. Sweden goaltender Emma Soderberg stopped 24 shots. Earlier, Japan beat another newly-promoted team, Norway, 5-2. Mei Miura had a goal and an assist and Akane Hosoyamada, Rui Ukita, Riri Noro and Akane Shiga also scored for Japan in another Group B game. Andrea Dalen and Marthe Brunvold had a goal each for Norway to mark its return to the top division after a 27-year absence. The 12-day, 10-nation tournament in the southern Czech city of Ceske Budejovice represents the final major international tune-up before the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. ___ AP women's hockey: in this topic

Victoire's Gardiner Wins Accuracy Shooting At Montreal Canadien Skills Competition
It wasn't a member of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens who finished with the fastest time at their annual skills competition's accuracy shooting event. Instead, that honor went to a PWHL player, Montreal Victoire forward Jennifer Gardiner. Gardiner finished the task of hitting all four targets in 9.457 seconds. The top finisher for the Montreal Canadiens was Mike Matheson who took 12.092 seconds. Her time was also better than four of five shooters at the 2024 NHL All-Star weekend with only Connor McDavid's 9.158 second completion topping Gardiner's mark.

Canadiens Held Annual Skills Contest
The skills competition was the one thing that never got old in the All-Star weekend, at least for me. Since the event was scrapped this season to make way for the 4 Nations Face-Off, seeing the Montreal Canadiens hold their annual skills competition was fun. For a second year in a row, the Habs had invited players from the PWHL's Montreal Victoire, and Jennifer Gardiner stole the show in the accuracy shooting event. Former Canadiens Who Had An Outstanding Career Made His NHL Debut On Feb. 23, 19853 Takeaways From the Canadiens Comeback GameDemidov Getting Nearer To The NHL As usual, the players were put through their paces in five competitions: speed skating, relay race, accuracy shooting, hardest shot, and a shootout round. The latter was essentially a session of unconventional shots to please young fans. Without surprise, Alex Newhook won the fastest skater competition. The relay race was a close affair between team red and team white. Red won the team contest, but Cole Caufield beat Nick Suzuki in the individual contest. The most awaited competition was the hardest shot, as Arber Xhekaj impressed last year with a 107.2 MPH shot (not that far from Zdeno Chara's NHL record 108.8 MPH and even closer to Shea Weber's 107.9 MPH). The gritty blueliner won the contest again this year with a 101.2 MPH effort, just 0.1 MPH over Mike Matheson's 101.1 MPH shot. The surprise of the day came in the accuracy shooting competition; defenseman Mike Matheson looked to be heading for the win and beat all his teammates with a 12.092-second mark, but one player from the Victoire decided her team wouldn't leave empty. No, it wasn't captain Marie-Philip Poulin, but rookie Jennifer Gardiner. She also scored the Rivalry series-clinching goal earlier this month, snapping a 1-1 tie late in the third frame of the seventh game. On Sunday morning in Montreal, though, she stole the show by destroying the four targets in just 9,457 seconds. That time not only beat everyone else in the competition but would also have beaten four of the last five winners at the All-Star weekend. Only Connor McDavid in 2024, with a 9.158 time, was faster than her. The record belongs to Daniel Sedin in 2011; he broke the four targets in 7.3 seconds. The players who are dealing with injuries or minor ailments did not take part and were on the bench, aside from Brendan Gallagher who didn't appear to be there…Has the baby watch started?
