Ohio lawmakers consider ‘escaped convict alert program' bill
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A bipartisan bill to alert citizens about escaped individuals is being considered at the Ohio Statehouse.
If passed and signed into law by Gov. Mike DeWine, Ohio House Bill 23 would create the 'escaped convict alert program.'
According to the bill, the ECAP would assist in the identification and location of individuals who:
Have been convicted or pleaded guilty to a felony offense
Indicted or charged 'with the commission of a felony offense'
ECAP would be for the aforementioned individuals that flee from either a correctional facility, jail or workhouse. It could also include those awaiting the 'adjudication of that felony offense' who escape.
The ECAP would initiate for the surrounding counties or region in which the escape would occur in.
Ohio representatives Jennifer Gross (R-West Chester) and Rep. Tom Young (R-Washington Township) are listed as the only area lawmakers named as cosponsors the bill.
The bill was referred to the Ohio House Public Safety Committee on Jan. 28.
