Porsche Taycan GTS Sets World Record for Longest Drifting on Ice

Read the full story on Modern Car Collector The Porsche Taycan GTS has achieved a new milestone, securing the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous drift on ice by an electric vehicle. In a feat that took place at the Porsche Arctic Centre in Lapland, the electric sports car was expertly maneuvered by instructor Jens Richter, who drifted for a total of 46 minutes, covering 17.5 kilometers. This surpassed the previous record by more than two kilometers. The record-breaking event, which took place on January 14, 2025, was not without its challenges. During the first attempt, Richter faced deteriorating ice conditions, forcing the team to halt after completing 11 kilometers. However, with improved ice temperatures and shorter spikes on the car's tires, the team pressed on. The second attempt proved successful, with Richter completing 132 laps in a controlled drift, demonstrating the car's precision and handling. The Porsche Taycan GTS, equipped with Michelin tires sporting one-millimeter spikes, was driven around a 59-meter drift circle. The vehicle was closely monitored with a professional GPS system that measured the drift path and tracked the driver's actions, including steering movements and the car's G-forces. Christian Lehwald, managing director of the Porsche Arctic Centre, celebrated the achievement, noting the optimal conditions in Lapland for such a record attempt. 'With the new Taycan GTS, we had confidence in our ability to break the record,' he said. The Taycan now holds four Guinness World Records, further cementing its reputation for performance and versatility, particularly in ice-driving environments. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter

Porsche Taycan GTS Drifts 11 Miles on Ice, Sets Guinness World Record

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." On January 14, 2025, a Porsche Taycan GTS drifted on ice for 17.503 kilometers — or, in America units, 10.87 miles. That long, long powerslide was enough to earn the Taycan it a Guinness world record title for the longest continuous vehicle drift on ice by an electric vehicle. The record-breaking drift took place at the Porsche Arctic Center in Levi, Finland, about 90 miles north of the Arctic Circle, with Porsche Experience instructor Jens Richter behind the wheel. In order to attempt the record, the Porsche team was created a circle on the ice with a diameter of just under 200 feet. The only change to the Taycan GTS was the addition of a commercially available set of Michelin tires with one-millimeter spikes, although a GPS device was also installed in the car to measure several metrics such as distance traveled, steering wheel movements, accelerator and braking, and if drifting on the ice for 11 miles wouldn't be challenging enough, the record run was performed in the dark. The first attempt began in the afternoon, but the repeated runs on the ice caused the track to deteriorate before the record could be achieved. As darkness fell, so did the temperatures, which kept the ice in better shape and allowed the record-breaking run. For the official run, Richter drifted the Taycan for 46 minutes, completing 132 laps of the ice track — and, presumably, getting a little dizzy in the process. Earning a Guinness World Records honor is nothing new for the Porsche Taycan; as it turns out, this is the fourth Guinness title the Taycan has earned since its release. It previously set records for fastest speed driven by a vehicle in an enclosed building, the greatest altitude change by an electric car and longest (non-ice) drift with an electric vehicle.
