Louisiana troopers urge road safety after overnight, morning deadly crashes

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Six people have been killed in crashes in the Baton Rouge area since Wednesday night. Authorities urge people to pay attention to the road and wear a seatbelt. Louisiana State Police said troopers are investigating a 'staggering' number of deadly crashes from overnight and Thursday morning across the state. 'Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families affected by these heartbreaking tragedies,' the agency said in a social media post. Troopers are urging drivers to focus on the road, never drive impaired or ride with an impaired driver and obey traffic laws. State law requires all people in a car to wear a seatbelt. Louisiana among most deadly states for nighttime drives, study says Anyone who sees an impaired or reckless driver is encouraged to report it to law enforcement by calling *577 or dialing 911. A St. Gabriel police chase ended in a Baton Rouge intersection crash around 7 p.m. Wednesday that left two Hahnville men dead and one person injured. The victims were identified as Jeremiah Downing, 24, and Hunter LaGrange, 22. Louisiana troopers are investigating this crash. A Donaldsonville man identified as Demaricus Kensie, 37, was left dead after a St. James Parish crash around 8 p.m. Wednesday. A juvenile was reportedly injured. Louisiana troopers are investigating this crash. A Virginia man was fatally struck by a car in West Baton Rouge Parish around 10 p.m. Wednesday. The victim was identified as Robert DiDomenico, 80. Investigators said DiDomenico's wife was critically injured. The West Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office is investigating this crash. An Ethel man walking along a highway was hit and killed by a car overnight in St. Francisville. Officers responded around 12:50 a.m. Thursday and identified the victim as Jeremy Matthews. The St. Francisville Police Department is investigating this crash. A New Orleans man identified as Dwayne Jackson, 41, was killed in an Ascension Parish crash involving a freightliner tractor-trailer around 1:30 a.m. Thursday. Louisiana troopers are investigating this crash.
