A 37-year-old man with an outstanding warrant was arrested following a routine traffic stop in Pocologan, N.B., over the weekend.
Members with the St. George RCMP stopped a rental van on Macarthy's Point Road around 12:30 a.m. Sunday as part of traffic enforcement.
Police say the driver was identified by an officer as having an outstanding arrest warrant for assaulting a police officer. He was also prohibited from driving in Canada.
When the officer told the man about the arrest warrant, he allegedly resisted and drove away, almost hitting the officer.
Police say the man continued to drive recklessly into oncoming traffic and they initiated a pursuit out of concern for public safety.
The driver then turned onto Seven Mile Lake Road and eventually lost control of his vehicle. Police say he fled on foot but was quickly apprehended.
The Saint John man was arrested and taken to hospital with what were believed to be minor injuries.
An RCMP collision reconstructionist, Police Dog Services and Ambulance New Brunswick also responded to the scene.
Jeremy Matthew Booker appeared in Saint John provincial court that same day and was charged with:
assaulting a police officer with a weapon
flight from police
resisting arrest
prohibited driving
dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
Booker was remanded into custody pending a future court appearance.
Police say their investigation is ongoing.
