Georgia Teacher, 28, collapsed at home... then woke up with no legs. Now she has won $70 million

A Georgia teacher has been awarded a $70 million payout more than a decade after botched medical treatment led to the amputation of both her legs. Jessica Powell's life took a dramatic turn in 2013 when she suddenly collapsed inside her home from hormone deficiency disease coupled with a stomach virus. The episode led to her being rushed to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany for life-saving medical help, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. However, the botched treatment ended with Powell losing both her legs above the knee. Then 28-years-old, Powell claimed this was the result of a reckless medication overdose administered by her doctors. Last month, the court agreed with her. On April 23, a Dougherty County jury awarded Powell, now 40, $70 million after taking only 30 minutes to rule in her favor, marking one of the largest awarded payouts in the state of Georgia for a medical malpractice case. 'That should tell you everything you need to know about who was right,' Matt Cook, one of Powell's lead attorneys, told Atlanta Journal. After reviewing two and a half weeks' of evidence, the court found the blame to fall on doctors Joe Morgan, James Palazzolo and Thomas Ungarino, along with Albany Pulmonary and Critical Care Associates and Albany Vascular Specialist Center. 'The verdict came as no surprise because we knew from Day One that our client was clearly mistreated by her physicians,' Cook said. 'What drove the result was just the repeated denials and unwillingness to accept responsibility in the face of overwhelming evidence of wrongdoing.' In March of 2013 Powell was rushed to Putney Memorial Hospital after collapsing, only to be hit with a devastating diagnosis of sepsis and shock once under the medical team's care. Doctors pumped Powell with a massive dose of Vasopressin, administering a dose two-and-a-half times higher than the maximum safe amount for a singular person over a 40-hour period. Since Vasopressin works by constricting blood vessels, Powell alleged that the overdose caused a dramatic drop in blood flow to the lower half of her body, specifically her legs and feet and ultimately starved them of oxygen. Morgan, one of the doctors named as at fault, allegedly brushed off Powell's care when he was called in to manage complications as the powerful drug was pulled and blood flow began returning to her body. However, what was meant to save Powell's life cost her both legs. From that point on, a legal battle erupted between Powell's attorneys and the hospital - a fight that would drag on for 12 years. All of those named at fault denied any wrongdoing, according to case filings reported in the Atlanta Journal. Throughout the case the medical professionals argued that they complied with the standard of care they intended to give, causing no harm to Powell. 'The care and treatment Ms Powell received at Phoebe (Putney Memorial Hospital) from Dr Palazzolo and others was necessary to save her life and preserve the function of her brain and other vital organs,' Palazzolo said in his September outline of the case, the Atlanta Journal reported. Ungarino, another physician blamed for the disaster, attempted to dodge blame by arguing that Powell's lower limbs were already irreversibly damaged before she even arrived at the hospital in critical condition, according to his case summary. The South Georgia jury ultimately decided to place 50 percent of the fault on Morgan and Albany Vascular Specialist Center, and the other half on Palazzolo, Ungarino and Albany Pulmonary and Critical Care Associates. All 12 jurors cleared the hospital of any responsibility, though the hospital settled Powell's claims against them before the trial and therefore was not listed as a defendant by the time it began. Attorneys for the doctors and companies issued a statement on Wednesday in response to the verdict, applauding Powell's lawyers for their performance in the courtroom and the judge for ensuring a fair and balanced trial, Atlanta Journal reported. While their statement acknowledged the 'tragic and highly complex medical emergency' Powell experienced in 2013, it also reiterated the physicians' 'appropriate' response to the incident. 'The physicians acted appropriately under extraordinarily difficult circumstances, and we respectfully disagree with the jury's verdict and any notion that these respected physicians failed to meet the standard of care,' the defense attorneys said. 'Unfortunately, the resulting bilateral above-the-knee amputations, while devastating, were an unavoidable consequence of the life-saving treatment provided.' However, Powell's lawyers argue that the verdict speaks volumes - the wrongdoing lies with those blamed by the court, which they say have been actively fighting her claims for over a decade. 'Instead of embracing their mistake, which probably would have resonated with the jury, they denied it and said, "We meant to administer the care this way,"' Shane Lazenby, another lead attorney for Powell said, Atlanta Journal reported. 'Jessica and her sisters are just great people and I think the jury connected with them because they're just good folks.'
