Forum: More can be done to give Singaporeans a chance to step onto global stage

Forum: More can be done to give Singaporeans a chance to step onto global stage I refer to the article 'Young Singaporeans must think beyond our shores' (June 3). It cited TikTok chief executive officer Chew Shou Zi and Sun Life Canada president Jessica Tan. They have indeed flown our flag high with their achievements. Nonetheless, we should also take a step back to analyse what has made them successful in order to create an ecosystem for other capable Singaporeans to succeed internationally. Mr Chew and Ms Tan did not take up government scholarships to study overseas. This provided them the flexibility to venture abroad in multiple countries and roles in their most productive years after graduation, without having to return to Singapore to serve out their bonds. When overseas opportunities arise, should the Government exercise flexibility and allow those on scholarships – the brightest of our education system – to follow suit? Or does the stance remain that scholarship holders should return to serve their bonds first? I know of many experienced Singaporeans willing to take on bigger roles overseas if they are given the chance to do so. However, multinational corporations and domestic companies often end up hiring foreign employees for overseas roles in view of local regulations, lower costs or other factors. The Opinion piece is right that Singaporeans should step onto the global stage as we have the skills and ability to do so . Perhaps the Government can do more to encourage employers to give us the chance to do so. It was the second-closest winning margin for the PAP in that election. DPM Heng , 64 , is not on the PAP slate this time. He had announced his retirement on Nomination Day on April 23. Asked about the results at Bedok Stadium just before midnight on May 3, DPM Heng said Singaporeans were giving Prime Minister Lawrence Wong 'a strong mandate' amid major global turbulence. Ms Gho, a maritime lawyer, had succeeded former MP Lim Biow Chuan – who will be retiring after having served for four terms. She has been a PAP activist since 2012 and the party's Bukit Timah branch secretary since December 2020. The PAP's Mountbatten candidate Gho Sze Kee retained the seat with 63.84 per cent of the vote. ST PHOTO: CHONG JUN LIANG Having walked the ground in Mountbatten with outgoing MP Lim Biow Chuan over the past 10 months, Ms Gho had previously said she was not parachuted into the constituency. Speaking to supporters at Bedok Stadium at around 1am on May 4, Ms Gho thanked residents in Mountbatten for giving her the opportunity to serve them. 'Going forward, you will see that I will pound the ground. I'll work as hard as I can for you,' she said. Ms Gho paid tribute to Mr Lim, and said she would continue his legacy of hard work in Mountbatten. She also thanked her opponent Mr Tan for stepping up to run in the election and giving residents a chance to vote. She said at her rally on April 30 that her team has already mapped out improvements to the estate, such as constituency sports clubs, career help, mental health support, childcare slots, connectivity improvements and dog runs. In GE2020, the PAP's Mr Lim, 61 , secured 73.84 per cent of votes in Mountbatten SMC. It was the second best-performing SMC in that election. He had beaten first-time candidate Sivakumaran Chellappa , 57 , of the Peoples Voice party. Join ST's WhatsApp Channel and get the latest news and must-reads.
