Dominicans demand justice after nightclub collapse
SANTO DOMINGO: Dozens of people and families of victims of a nightclub collapse in the Dominican Republic last month, which left 233 people dead, gathered Thursday at a vigil to demand justice. The roof of the Jet Set nightclub came crashing down in the early hours of April 8 on hundreds of people attending a concert by merengue star Rubby Perez, in the Caribbean nation's worst disaster in decades. The club's owner told local media last month the roof had been leaking for years and had 'never' been inspected by authorities. At least 38 lawsuits have been lodged against the club's owners. A memorial of flowers, candles and photos of the victims has been erected at the entrance of the club, now blocked from public access, along with placards calling for justice. 'We want justice, because this has been very painful for all of us,' 46-year-old Fanny Martinez, whose sister and niece died in the tragedy, told AFP. She said her family is preparing a lawsuit against the club's managers because 'if it stays like this, the pain will be greater if things are go unpunished.' Martinez's sister, who lived in Spain, and her niece, who worked at the Guatemalan Embassy in the Dominican Republic, were visiting the club for the first time. 'We can't sleep. Every day that goes by, it affects us more... it sticks in our heads. It's a very hard ordeal, and that's why we want justice,' she said with tears in her eyes. An investigation has been opened and Dominican President Luis Abinader has vowed there will be 'no government intervention' in the judicial process. The Dominican Republic has no law requiring privately-owned buildings to undergo safety inspections. After the disaster President Luis Abinader said the government was drafting a bill making inspections mandatory. The lawsuits include charges of manslaughter against the club's managers, and of negligence against various public institutions.

Here's how Passaic will honor memory of city woman who died in Jet Set nightclub collapse
The city of Passaic will create a scholarship in memory of Jennifer C. Contreras, the 23-year-old local woman who died in the April 8 Jet Set nightclub disaster in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The scholarship will help local youth with costs associated with obtaining cosmetology certification, officials said. "It's been added to the city's current training program," Mayor Hector Lora said. "We have a partnership with Passaic County Community College. The scholarship will cover the full cost of the program." Contreras was among 231 people confirmed killed when the roof at the iconic nightclub collapsed. Seventeen of the deceased were Americans, published reports said. At least four were from New Jersey, Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way said in April. Before she left for Santo Domingo, Contreras was planning to open her own beauty shop in the city. She was a graduate of Passaic County Technical Institute in Wayne. Her brother Anthony said she had been in Santo Domingo to complete a certification class on eyebrow micropigmentation. Lora said he announced the scholarship last month at a vigil held outside Contreras' home on Passaic's Hammond Avenue. More: In Passaic, familiar foes face off for mayor's race, newcomer seeks City Council seat The scholarship will help both residents and local businesses, the mayor added. The latter, he said, would get trained workers for their shops. The initial $10,000 in funding for the scholarship will come from government Urban Enterprise Zone funds, but the mayor also hopes to gain support from local businesses and residents. For instance, one hope is that local hair salons or barbershops will sponsor individuals and assure employment after program completion. It can cost between $8,000 and $18,000 to obtain certification from private beauty schools and community colleges. The city will help but will require the money to be paid back if recipients don't finish the training, Lora said. How much each scholarship provides will depend on circumstances. Cosmetology is among the various job training opportunities the city offers with the assistance of schools like Passaic County Community College. The city also assists with training for phlebotomy, pharmacy assistant, security and commercial drivers' licenses. The city's Urban Enterprise Zone website will be posting the scholarship application shortly, Lora said. Mass shooting at Myrtle Beach nightclub leaves 11 injured and one dead
A shooting in Myrtle Beach, South Caroline left one person dead and 11 others injured late Saturday night, according to police. The Myrtle Beach Police Department is now scrambling to piece together the horrific scene as the popular tourist hotspot turned into a zone of terror. Just before the clock struck midnight on Saturday at 11:50 p.m., Myrtle Beach police officers stumbled upon a full-blown brawl involving a crowd of people. According to the authorities, they 'observed a disturbance involving multiple individuals.' Cops say a chaotic fight turned deadly in Myrtle Beach when someone whipped out a weapon, forcing an officer to fire back. 'The individual shot during officer response has passed away as a result of their injuries,' police posted on Facebook. Authorities confirmed the officer involved escaped without injury. The Myrtle Beach Police Department released a statement, saying: 'The Myrtle Beach Police Department offers its prayers and deepest sympathies to everyone affected by this incident.' Following standard procedure, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) will now step in to conduct an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Additionally, the Myrtle Beach Police Department will also carry out an internal review of the deadly incident. 'We appreciate the public's patience as both investigations proceed, and all leads are thoroughly examined,' the department stated. This latest shooting comes just weeks after a devastating nightclub tragedy in the Dominican Republic that has reignited concerns over public safety in crowded venues worldwide. On April 8, 2025, the roof of the iconic Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo suddenly collapsed during a live performance by legendary merengue singer Rubby Pérez. The catastrophe left 232 people dead—including Pérez himself—and 225 others injured, with around 515 patrons inside at the time. The Jet Set nightclub, a staple of the Dominican capital since 1973, was well known for hosting celebrities, politicians, and athletes. Originally built as a movie theater, it underwent major renovations in 2010 and 2015. Structural experts now believe that those renovations—including the installation of heavy equipment and layers of lightweight concrete to help with drainage—added more than 55 tons of weight to a roof that was never engineered to hold it. In the aftermath, the club's owner, Antonio Espaillat, said he was "completely destroyed" by the tragedy and insisted he had no idea the building was in danger. He admitted the club had ongoing issues with water leaks from air conditioning units—often patched by replacing plasterboard—but had never received a full structural assessment. Authorities in the Dominican Republic have since launched an investigation with both local and international experts to determine what went wrong. The disaster stands as one of the deadliest non-natural tragedies in the nation's history.
