Jewel Andrew becomes the youngest West Indian ODI opener
Jewel Andrew became the youngest player to open the innings for West Indies ODIs and in limited overs cricket after the 18-year-old was pushed to the top of the order in the absence of veteran Evin Lewis, who sustained an injury. Andrew opened against England in the second ODI of the three-match series in Cardiff on Sunday. Playing only his third ODI match, the batter opened alongside Brandon King after England chose to bowl. At 18 years and 176 days, Andrew broke Xavier Marshall's record of being the youngest white-ball opener for the Men in Maroon. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Chi phí cấy ghép răng là bao nhiêu vào năm 2025 (kiểm tra giá) Cấy ghép răng | Quảng cáo tìm kiếm Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Youngest opener for the West Indies in ODIs Jewel Andrew - 18 years, 176 days (WI vs ENG) - Cardiff, 2025 Xavier Marshall - 19 years, 47 days (WI vs SA) - Barbados, 2005 Kieran Powell - 19 years, 147 days (WI vs BAN) - Basseterre, 2009 Adrian Barath - 19 years, 324 days (WI vs ZIM) - Providence, 2010 In T20Is, Adrian Barath holds the record as West Indies' youngest opener when he played at 19 years and 320 days. WI announce squad for ODI series against Ireland, England
West Indies have announced their 15-man squad for the upcoming One Day International (ODI) series against Ireland and England. The squad remains mostly unchanged from the side that recently whitewashed Bangladesh 3-0 in December. One notable omission is Shimron Hetmyer, who is currently playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Wicketkeeper-batter Jewel Andrew returns to the squad, while Shai Hope will continue to lead the team. Brandon King and Evin Lewis are expected to open the batting, with Keacy Carty likely to bat at number three. Fast bowlers Shamar Joseph and Matthew Forde have both recovered from injuries that kept them out of the Bangladesh series and are back in the squad. Young batter Amir Jangoo, who impressed with a 79-ball century on debut against Bangladesh, will be aiming to secure a regular place in the playing XI. The three-match ODI series against Ireland will begin on May 21 at Clontarf Cricket Club in Dublin. After the Ireland tour, West Indies will head to England for another three-match ODI series starting May 29 at Edgbaston, followed by a three-match T20I series. The T20I squad is yet to be announced. West Indies currently sit ninth in the ICC ODI rankings and are looking to build momentum as they aim for automatic qualification for the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, which will be hosted by South Africa and Zimbabwe. Speaking on the announcement, head coach Daren Sammy said, "These matches form a critical component towards the 2027 World Cup and there are signs of the team building consistency following the series sweep against Bangladesh and the win over England late last year." He added, "We expect the conditions to be challenging but we are creating a culture and mindset which emphasise playing the brand of cricket that is taking us closer to some of our overall objectives." In a change to the coaching setup, former West Indies fast bowler Ravi Rampaul has been appointed as the new bowling coach, replacing James Franklin. Former Ireland allrounder Kevin O'Brien will also join the coaching staff during the Ireland leg of the tour. West Indies ODI squad: Shai Hope (captain), Jewel Andrew, Keacy Carty, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Justin Greaves, Amir Jangoo, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Evin Lewis, Gudakesh Motie, Sherfane Rutherford, Jayden Seales, Romario Shepherd.
