It Took a Whopping 350,000 Sequins to Make Whoopi Goldberg's 2025 Met Gala Dress
Whoopi Goldberg may be a comedian, but she meant serious business when it came to her look at the 2025 Met Gala For her second Met Gala, Goldberg turned to the maestro of suiting himself, Thom Browne, for her bespoke look: a black floor-length button-through dress fabricated in duchesse satin and outfitted with suit lapels and raglan sleeves with a white knee-length overcoat that laced up the back. The ensemble was accessorized with black-and-white longwing patent-leather boots with four-inch curved heels and a black top hat with a netted for his attention to detail—was nothing short of meticulous with his look for Goldberg. The white overcoat was embroidered with 350,000 matte sequins—a process that took 7,700 hours to create. 'For me, everything begins and ends with tailoring,' Browne says. 'I like to play with and reinterpret classic codes of black-tie dressing—and to reintroduce these traditional codes to people in ways they've never seen before.' Goldberg embellished her black-and-white look with colorful, bespoke L'Echanteur jewelry. On her fingers, Goldberg added brass finger caps and rings encrusted with green tourmaline, diamonds, tanzanite, garnet, and purple sapphire. She festooned her dress with a gold link chain and keyhole brooch with black opal and blue and white diamonds, with gold sunglasses finishing everything off.

A post shared by L'Atelier Nawbar - Fine Jewelry (@lateliernawbar) The sisters also decided to move away from the traditional business model and offer something new. 'We didn't want to traditionally follow the family business as it was,' Dima said. So the sisters decided to embrace individuality by remodeling pieces and creating new bespoke jewelry for clients. Clients are able to bring their own jewelry into the atelier, and the designers will upcycle and redesign the pieces into something fresh and modern.
