Letter: There's no need for debate about antisemitic protests
'Definition debate' (Reading Eagle, May 15) in essence disputed accusations of antisemitism in the anti-Israel protests at American universities. Among the chants at those protests is the phrase 'globalize the intifada.' This is commonly heard at these events (which are not quite as peaceful as the article portrayed), and last week we saw what 'globalize the intifada' really means when a man calling out 'free Palestine' shot and killed two Israeli embassy workers in cold blood. One of them was a 25-year-old Jewish American citizen. The article implied that the protests are peaceful. At Columbia University and UCLA (among many other schools), Jewish students were harassed and prevented from accessing parts of the campus. In many cases the protests and encampments were in violation of campus rules. Buildings were illegally occupied. Calling these protests peaceful reminds me of the reporting on 'mostly peaceful protests' in 2020 with burning buildings in the background. I don't believe most of the protesters are Jew haters, but many of the organizers most definitely are. Organizations such as CU Apartheid Divest at Columbia and Students for Justice in Palestine nationwide promote Hamas talking points, and many protesters wear Hamas symbols. I found the article to be profoundly disingenuous. Philip Pomerantz Wyomissing

DC shooting: Victim Sarah Milgrim's friend remembers her as a ‘smart, kind' person, ‘Spoke with her just 8 days ago…'
A friend of Capital Jewish Museum shooting victim Sarah Milgrim has paid an emotional tribute to the Jewish American employee at the Israeli Embassy in the US. Sarah was killed alongside her fiance, Yaron Lischinsky, when suspect Elias Rodriguez opened fire. Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi, the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, told that Sarah was her 'friend through climate work.' In a LinkedIn post, Jennifer described the murders as 'an antisemitic political assassination,' and described Sarah as a 'smart, kind' person who 'was passionate about building a sustainable future.' Jennifer revealed in her post that she recently attended an Earth Day and climate event organized by Sarah. 'The event was with Israel's Chaim V'Svivah (Life & the Environment) and outlined key climate challenges, solutions and nonprofit groups in Israel. They did a terrific job. Sarah was full of life and enthusiasm for doing good in the world,' she wrote. She added, 'Separately, I spoke with Sarah just 8 days ago on another climate topic. My heart goes out to all who loved Sarah and her fiancé. May their memories be a blessing always.' Remembering Sarah and Yaron, Jennifer wrote, 'Right now Israelis are in the bomb shelters as they are under attack. Innocent people are suffering in Gaza. When will Hamas release the rest of the hostages and when will this war be over?' In a follow-up LinkedIn post, Jennifer expressed her disappointment in 'many groups that had previously spoken out against hate crimes against other communities' after the October 7 Hamas attack but were 'heartbreakingly silent about the mass murder, rapes, torture, and kidnappings committed in Israel.' 'This included, sadly, some hashtag #disability and #womens organizations I had worked closely with. Their silence was not just painful — it was dangerous. It signaled that the lives of Israelis didn't matter. That void was quickly filled with hate,' Sarah, co-founder of theMizrahi Family Charitable Fund (DAF), added. 'What followed were not just omissions, but harmful distortions — some out of ignorance, others fueled by antisemitism or anti-Zionism,' she further said. 'Today, as we mourn Sarah and Yaron, we must also speak truth. There are responsible ways to criticize Israeli policies. But that must never include lies, incitement, or erasing the humanity of innocent people.' Meanwhile, in an article in The Times of Israel, Jennifer described Sarah as 'a young, passionate, and brilliant environmental advocate.' 'Sarah truly embodied the Jewish value of tikkun olam—repairing the world. Her loss is devastating not only to her family and friends but to the entire global environmental and Jewish communities. We mourn not only the vibrant life that was stolen but also the future she was helping to build. Her boyfriend was a devout Christian who, like Sarah, was a true visionary,' she added. Sarah and Yaron were soon set to get engaged. The suspect, Rodriguez, who was heard chanting 'free Palestine' after carrying out the deadly shooting, is reportedly in custody.

A ‘Vital' Williamsburg Diner Is Closing This Summer
A Brooklyn restaurant known for its bright all-day vibes and modern New York Jewish diner and deli dishes is closing this summer. Gertie — that former Eater critic called a 'vital' addition to the NYC neighborhood dining scene — will have its last day in Williamsburg at 357 Grand Street at Marcy Avenue on Sunday, June 15. The Instagram announcement describes the shutter as Gertie's 'season finale, not a series finale.' The restaurant's co-owners founder and restaurateur Nate Adler and Rachel Jackson are looking for a new location for the restaurant, ideally near their other Brooklyn restaurant, Jewish American bistro Gertrude's, in Prospect Heights (which is run with chef and restaurant industry meme-maker Eli Sussman). Eater has reached out for more information. Adler took his cues for Gertie from Los Angeles all-day cafes such as Gjelina, but New York sensibilities, when the restaurant opened in 2019. Its modern Jewish menu includes dishes like chicken schnitzel with challah, bagels, latkes, and more. At the time, former Eater NY critic Ryan Sutton described Gertie as mimicking 'the sunny ethos of Los Angeles while also acting as a neo-nostalgia factory for classic New York specialties.' The restaurant also won Eater New York's Eater Award for best design of that year. Sign up for our newsletter.

64 percent of Jewish voters disapprove of Trump efforts to fight antisemitism: Poll
More than half of Jewish American voters disapprove of President Trump's efforts to combat antisemitism, according to a new poll. In the Jewish Voters Resource Center poll, 64 percent of respondents said they either 'strongly disapprove' or 'somewhat disapprove' when it comes to 'the job Donald Trump is doing combatting antisemitism.' And 36 percent said they either 'strongly approve' or 'somewhat approve' of his efforts. On Tuesday, the Trump administration unveiled that it was slashing an extra $450 million in grants for Harvard University, alleging that when it came to fighting against 'pervasive race discrimination and anti-Semitic harassment' on campus, the school had failed. 'Harvard's campus, once a symbol of academic prestige, has become a breeding ground for virtue signaling and discrimination. This is not leadership; it is cowardice. And it's not academic freedom; it's institutional disenfranchisement,' the White House's Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism said in a prior statement. In recent months, the Trump administration has targeted higher education institutions over alleged inaction over campus antisemitism and policies around transgender athletes. Seventy-seven percent of poll respondents said they are 'very concerned' or 'somewhat concerned' when it comes to 'antisemitism on college campuses,' while 23 percent said they are 'not too concerned' or 'not at all concerned' on the topic. On May 6, Columbia University's acting president said close to 180 jobs were going to be lost at the school due to funding cuts from the Trump administration. 'Moving forward, we will be running lighter footprints of research infrastructure in some areas and, in others, maintaining a level of research continuity as we pursue alternate funding sources. In some cases, schools and departments are winding down activity but remain prepared to reestablish capabilities if support is restored,' university officials including Claire Shipman, the school's acting president, said in a message to Columbia's community. The Jewish Voters Resource Center poll took place from April 22 to May 1, featured 800 people who labeled themselves as Jewish voters and had a plus or minus 3.5 percentage point margin of error.
