Walter Frankenstein obituary: Holocaust survivor who evaded Nazis
They were the most difficult circumstances imaginable in which to marry and start a family. But Walter Frankenstein and Leonie Rosner were determined that they would resist the Nazi drive to destroy all hope of survival for Jews living in Germany.
The couple had met in a Jewish orphanage in Berlin, fallen in love and married. Their son Peter-Uri was born in 1943. Walter, who had once hoped to become an architect, had trained as a bricklayer with the Jewish community but had been made by the Nazis to work as a slave labourer in offices run by the SS.
