Cheveldayoff, Nill, and Zito finalists for NHL GM of the Year Award

The NHL announced its three candidates for the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award on Friday: Kevin Cheveldayoff of the Winnipeg Jets, Jim Nill of the Dallas Stars, and Bill Zito of the Florida Panthers. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Unlike other end-of-season awards, this award is voted on by NHL general managers, executives, and a select group of media following the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, placing importance on both regular-season performance and post-season success. Regular-season dominance, playoff success, and astute roster maneuverings characterize 2025 GM of the Year finalists 2025 NHL Awards Predictions | 32 Thoughts Kevin Cheveldayoff guided the Winnipeg Jets to their strongest regular season in team history, winning the Presidents' Trophy with a 56-22-4 mark and 116 points. Last season's first-round playoff failure served as the catalyst for Cheveldayoff to rebuild behind the bench, again advancing Scott Arniel — this year a Jack Adams Award finalist — and supplementing at the trade deadline with Brandon Tanev and Luke Schenn. While the Jets fell to Dallas in six games, Cheveldayoff's regular-season master plan received league-wide acclaim. In the meantime, Jim Nill is chasing a third straight GM of the Year Award win. His Dallas Stars reached the Western Conference Final for the third consecutive year and dispatched Cheveldayoff's Jets in Round 2. Nill took big bets at the trade deadline, acquiring Mikko Rantanen — now the NHL's top playoff point scorer — and committing to him on an eight-year extension. He also brought in veterans Mikael Granlund and Cody Ceci, both of whom have played a part in the Stars' playoff success. In the Panthers' own backyard, Bill Zito continues to cement his place as one of the best players in the NHL. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers last season held the Eastern Conference Final position again, and they lead Carolina 2-0. Despite free-agent losses of several of its key players — Brandon Montour and Anthony Stolarz among them — Zito reloaded with under-the-radar acquisitions such as Jesper Boqvist and Tomas Nosek, then acquired larger deadline bargains in Seth Jones and former Boston captain Brad Marchand. Also read: This is the third consecutive season that Nill and Zito are finalists, and both have established strong positions again. Nill is the leader among active GMs with two Jim Gregory Awards, and Zito has been up for the award consecutively three times, the second-most since 2009-10, when the award began.

The Hockey Show: Are the Panthers about to repeat? Dimitri Filipovic discuss conference finals, exits by Toronto, Winnipeg

We're down to the NHL's final four and for the third straight season, the Florida Panthers are still alive! This week on The Hockey Show, hosts Roy Bellamy and David Dwork welcomed Dimitri Filipovic of the PDOcast to get into the latest happenings in and around the NHL. Advertisement That mostly included talk about the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and can you blame them? They touched on a couple of the recently eliminated teams, like the Toronto Maple Leafs – who had a 2-0 series lead and a 3-1 lead in Game 3 before getting knocked out in seven by Florida – and the Winnipeg Jets – the Presidents' Trophy winners who struggled mightily on the road and didn't get the same goaltending from Connor Hellebuyck during the playoffs that they did during the regular season. The boys (and Rose) also got into the two conference finals, with the Dallas Stars and the Edmonton Oilers out west and the Panthers facing the Carolina Hurricanes in the east. Dallas pulled off an impressive comeback on the Oilers to take Game 1 of their rematch series while Florida continued some incredibly strong road play by taking Games 1 and 2 in Carolina by a combined score of 10-2. Advertisement Wins and fails of the week included a masterclass in being interviewed on live TV by Florida's A.J. Greer, a Panthers fan walking around Downtown Toronto in a fresh new Florida Brad Marchand jersey before Game 7 and a horrible attempt at a sign trolling Marchand by a fan in Raleigh. Panthers GM Bill Zito named finalists for Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award

Is this the year for Bill Zito? On Friday morning we learned that Zito has been named a finalist for the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award. It's the fourth time in Zito's five seasons in Florida's front office that he's been named a finalist for the award. He's been more than deserving, as Zito has overseen the biggest shift in success that this franchise has ever seen. Before Zito was hired in September of 2020, Florida had not won a playoff series since 1996. In the five seasons since, the Panthers have made the playoffs in each year. They won the Presidents' Trophy in 2022 as the league's best regular season team. Over the past three seasons, Florida has reached the Eastern Conference Final each year, advancing to the Stanley Cup Final in both 2023 and 2024. Oh, and they won the whole thing last June. The roster that Zito has built is one of the absolute best in the league, featuring a combination of high-end talent and solid depth players that comprise arguably the tightest, friendliest and most cohesive locker room in the NHL. Zito has signed much of Florida's core to long-term extensions that will keep the team together for the foreseeable future, including Panthers Captain Sasha Barkov and team leader Matthew Tkachuk. Team-friendly extensions were signed by key players Sam Reinhart, Anton Lundell, Carter Verhaeghe, Gus Forsling and Dmitry Kulikov. Via trade, Zito has acquired Tkachuk, Reinhart, Sam Bennett, Seth Jones, and let's not forget players who have since departed like Brandon Montour, Kevin Stenlund, Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Anthony Stolarz. To his credit, Zito has told THN Florida that he cares about winning the 'big silvery trophy' than the GM of the Year award, but still, if anybody is deserving of recognition for the job he's done in the front office, its Zito. Also nominated this year are Dallas GM Jim Nill, who has won the award in each of the past two seasons, and Winnipeg GM Kevin Cheveldayoff. Voting for the award is done by NHL general managers and a panel of league executives. The winner will be announced during NHL Awards later this summer.
