Elizabeth City gets snow, sleet mix Wednesday evening
ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) – Areas throughout southeastern Virginia and southeastern North Carolina saw heavy snowfall throughout Wednesday — but Elizabeth City saw the added risk of dangerous ice.
The snow mixed with sleet Wednesday evening, which made driving conditions treacherous.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) said that, as of Thursday morning, all the primary roads in the region have been scraped and are passable. The secondary roads have yet to be scraped, and drivers are advised against traveling along the roads until conditions improve.
Officials with NCDOT said they have an army of road workers ready to try and make the best of the situation.
'They're already bad and driving is not recommended,' Jim Hoadley with NCDOT said. 'And it's only gonna get worse, and it's not supposed to let up. We'll get back on primary roads again [Thursday] morning, and hopefully by Friday, we can have our primary roads wide open.'
City officials said there have been numerous reports from the Elizabeth City Police Department of vehicles becoming stuck due to the ice. People are urged to avoid the roads as conditions are not expected to improve on Thursday with the below freezing temperatures.
