London's festival king on the capital's newest — and greenest — blowout

When Massive Attack take to the Victoria Park stage to close the first day of Lido, the capital's newest multi-day music festival, they might not realise they're witnessing musical history. 'It will be fully battery operated,' Jim King, head of European festivals at organiser AEG, tells me. 'The whole of the event will be operated from batteries. There's no generators at all. There's no emissions from generators at any time.' Picture a festival and you probably think of bands, light rigs and bars; what you probably don't see in your mind's eye are the clunking, usually diesel-fuelled generators whirring away behind each of them. It's all a bit … industrial. Lido's first night will be different. 'With Lido we've had the opportunity to really embrace

Lancaster brewery pours optimism and beer after overnight fire damages building

LANCASTER, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Benford Brewing nearly went up in flames overnight. Owner Bryan Oneal was smoking some meat for the next day when he says his smoker caught fire early Saturday morning. 'We lost pretty much everything in smoke damage. The structure is salvageable; the brewery equipment is salvageable. We lost lights, we burnt wires,' Oneal said. 'There was a grill sitting beside it and it caught on fire, lit the propane tank, basically made a blowtorch called the insulation on fire. And it woke my wife up.' It made her wake him up to see what was going on. Thankfully, they were able to call 911 just minutes before the building was in ashes. He's taken at least three trailers to the dumpster of things they couldn't save. Close friends who were once only customers showed up early to help clean up debris. Oneal says it's a testament to his 13-year-old business. 'He's a community advocate. He'll do anything for any charity that's reputable and he'll let them use his farm. He's done it for years and years. And when you know, when I found out, I knew I had to come and help. And there's been an army of people,' said close friend Jim King. While the clean-up was happening, more customers arrived. Madeline Cobb hadn't been to the brewery for the last two years; she says she wanted to bring her husband while they were visiting family. 'I was a little confused walking up and I could smell it. I didn't really realize what was going on, and everyone was outside, which is normal. But then, yeah, he just walked up to us. It's like there was a fire last night. Do you want a beer?' Cobb said. 'We have plenty of beer. So if somebody wants to come out here and have a beer, we have plenty. Picnic table would be a lot of green space,' Oneal said. Through it all, Oneal remains optimistic. 'We'll fix that stuff. It's much better than it could've been,' he said. Oneal is only asking the public's help for one thing, just come out and get a beer! Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Phone lines down in Adam's Cove days after raging wildfire

Small Point-Adam's Cove-Blackhead-Broad Cove is without phone services days after a wildfire destroyed homes and forced residents to flee the Conception Bay North community. The town is serviced by Bell. Councillor Sue Rose says the company "seems to not give two hoots" about residents of the area, which had no cell service, even before losing landline access on Saturday. "You have to be connected to your house to use your cell phone," Rose told CBC News. "You can't step outside your door and go on a walk and feel safe. If something happened … you're not going to have service." She added that one of her friends took it upon herself to rescue her sister from the raging fire this week because she had no way of communicating with her. "She finally got on the quad and went through fire to get her," said Rose. She said the pair is lucky to be alive. For their part, a Bell representative told the town late Saturday morning that the company is sending out a technician "immediately." In the meantime the outage is also affecting pagers and landlines at the North Shore Volunteer Fire Department, according to firefighter Jim King. The fire is contained and the state of emergency has been lifted, but firefighters are still dealing with hot spots. King says there is currently no way to directly contact the fire department, and volunteers are relying on cell phones — with spotty connection — and word of mouth. "Everything is under control here with the fires," he said. "But now, we've got 25 in our department … and there's no way to contact them." CBC News does not know the source of the outage, and has asked Bell for a response.
