A man from Kawartha Lakes faces several weapons-related charges after police say officers seized a loaded firearm during a traffic stop in Newmarket.
York Regional police say the officers pulled over a vehicle late Sunday evening in the area of Ashworth Drive and Bristol Road and discovered one of the occupants was wanted by police.
The officers conducted a search which police say led to the discovery of the firearm. Police say the 51-year-old man had three separate firearm prohibitions for unrelated offences at the time of his arrest.
'What started as a traffic stop ended with a firearm safely removed from our streets,' stated Police Chief Jim MacSween.
The other occupants in the vehicle were released shortly after the man's arrest.
