World premiere for Gerry Adams documentary at Galway Film Fleadh

The documentary Gerry Adams: A Ballymurphy Man will receive its world premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh in July, it has been announced. The Trisha Ziff-directed film is billed as "the first time Gerry Adams sits down to tell his story from teenage activist to party leader". It will screen at the Town Hall Theatre in Galway on Saturday 12 July at 4pm. The festival will open on Tuesday 8 July with Re-Creation from co-directors Jim Sheridan and David Merriman. In Re-Creation 's fictitious Irish trial, a jury must decide whether the British journalist Ian Bailey, who died in January 2024, is guilty of the murder of the French filmmaker Sophie Toscan du Plantier in west Cork in December 1996. Ian Bailey was arrested twice by gardaí investigating Ms Toscan du Plantier's death. However, the Director of Public Prosecutions decided no charge was to be brought against him in relation to her murder. He was convicted in his absence of the murder by a French court in 2020 and a 25-year sentence was imposed on him. However, the High Court in Ireland ruled that he should not be extradited to France to face that jail term. Ian Bailey protested his innocence until his death in Cork in January 2024. The cast of Re-Creation includes Vicky Krieps, Jim Sheridan, Aidan Gillen, Colm Meaney, and Brendan Conroy. The Galway Film Fleadh will close on Sunday 13 July with The Life of Chuck, writer-director Mike Flanagan's adaptation of the Stephen King science fiction novella of the same name. The film stars Tom Hiddleston in the title role alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, and Mark Hamill. The Life of Chuck opens in Irish cinemas on Friday 22 August. Galway Film Fleadh Director of Programming Maeve McGrath said: "The Fleadh is opening strong in 2025 with the Irish premiere of Re-Creation, fresh from its world premiere at Tribeca [Film Festival in New York]. "We are delighted to have a big year of Irish films at the Fleadh this year with over 42 Irish films screening, with the Fleadh providing a platform for Irish film year on year. "Documentary filmmakers play a pivotal role in bringing stories of the world to the screen and in Gerry Adams: A Ballymurphy Man director Trisha Ziff brings Gerry's story to the screen from his youth to the present day. "We are thrilled to be closing the Fleadh with The Life of Chuck, a stunning film that won the People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). [It's] A film with strong characters that will make the audience reflect on their own relationships. A must-see at the Fleadh in July." Watch: The trailer for The Life of Chuck

‘Dumbest game ever' – Former England star, 33, takes up violent new sport slammed by experts

Jim Sheridan, Sport Reporter Published: Invalid Date, RUGBY LEAGUE star George Burgess is taking up new Aussie sport RUNIT - dubbed the "dumbest game ever". The former Wigan Warriors prop, 33, will compete for AUS$20,000 (£9,500) at the RUNIT Championship League on Wednesday. 2 Burgess, who originally hails from West Yorkshire, retired from rugby for a second time last year. The 33-year-old spent the majority of his career in Australia playing for South Sydney. And he will head to Melbourne later this week to take on Down Under's newest craze. RUNIT is a simple sport involving two competitors, who charge at each other at high speed on a 20-metre-long 'battlefield'. One player holds a rugby ball while the other attempts to tackle the runner, resulting in bone-crunching hits. RUNIT's rules state that "victory belongs to the one who dominates the collision". The sport has been criticised by health professionals, including leading neuroscientist Dr Helen Murray. She told the New Zealand Herald: "From a CTE standpoint, we know that exposure to repeated head acceleration events is the biggest risk factor for CTE pathology. "Therefore, finding ways to reduce these impacts in contact sports is a priority for player safety. "It appears there is no attempt to mitigate head acceleration events in this activity. Watch brutal moment rugby league star VOMITS on pitch after taking bone-shakingly hard hit from rival "The risk of significant injury is high, given the intent to collide, so I do not support it." RUNIT plans to hold an event in New Zealand next month. The hope is then to expand to the UK, USA, and Saudi Arabia later this year. Organisers have hit back over claims the sport is dangerous, but did slam the running of unlicensed 'backyard' events. A RUNIT spokesperson said, via The Daily Mail: "Yes, a knockout can potentially occur, but this is not the aim of our game. We disallow tackles below the waist and above the shoulders. A knockout, like any other combat sport, is a byproduct RUNIT organiserDaily Mail "The aim is to dominate contact - whether you bump someone over or land a good, clean hit. "We disallow tackles below the waist and above the shoulders. A knockout, like any other combat sport, is a byproduct. "Unlike any other combat sport, however it is not our aim. "Athletes are screened by a doctor pre and post matches, medics are present, and medical waivers inclusive of drug and blood tests are completed prior to any participation." Fans have been left baffled by the new sport as it prepares for a showcase in New Zealand. Commenting on a viral video of a competitor being KO'd in an unlicensed event, one fan sighed on X: "Dumbest game ever." Another said: "This just looks super dangerous." The RUNIT organiser added in response: "The video we felt was horrendous and backyard events such as that one was very disappointing to see."

Carlo Ancelotti agrees next job with Real Madrid set to ‘part ways nicely' with former Chelsea boss

Jim Sheridan, Sport Reporter Published: Invalid Date, CARLO ANCELOTTI has already lined up a new job as he prepares to exit Real Madrid. The former Chelsea boss, 65, looks all set to leave the Bernabeu at the end of the season. 3 Ancelotti is said to have already told senior figures in the dressing room of his decision to depart. The 65-year-old won the Champions League last season but saw his side crash out to Arsenal earlier this month. And now he is preparing to go into international management for the first time. Ancelotti has reportedly reached an agreement in principle with Brazil to become head coach for the 2026 World Cup. Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claims the deal will be "valid from June, NOT after the Club World Cup". It leads the way for Madrid and Ancelotti to "part ways nicely" after four years. Brazil is the most successful nation ever to play in the World Cup. But they have been knocked out in the quarter-final stage in four of the last five tournaments. Carlo Ancelotti shows his disappointment as Real Madrid crashes out of Champions League to Arsenal Real chief Florentino Perez will likely have to appoint an interim boss for this summer's revamped Club World Cup in the USA. Director of Football Santi Solari is said to be best placed for the role. But other reports suggest Madrid could approach number one target Xabi Alonso before the tournament begins. Ancelotti has enjoyed two spells in the Spanish capital, originally taking charge in 2013. 3 Over the course of his illustrious career, he's won five Champions League trophies. At the Bernabeu, he has lifted three LaLiga titles and two Copa del Reys, along with Big Ears three times. La Gazzetta dello Sport claimed earlier this month AC Milan had contacted the Italian over a return to the San Siro. Ancelotti won the Serie A and Champions League titles twice with the Rossoneri as manager between 2001 and 2009.
