B.C. man drives around with exotic bird perched in classic car

Adam finds out what happens when a toddler who loves birds meets a macaw who loves car rides. Adam finds out what happens when a toddler who loves birds meets a macaw who loves car rides. PARKSVILLE, B.C. — When Evalyn Fitzsimmons walked out on her balcony to look through her binoculars to look for her young daughter's favourite things, she expected to find the usual birds. 'Quinn looks up at them,' Evalyn smiles at her toddler. 'And when the ravens do that throaty sound, she's like blah-blah-bloop-bloop.' When Quinn's not answering the call of the wild birds perched on the tree across the street, she's asking to visit the injured ones being rehabilitated at the animal sanctuary. So, you can imagine how the toddler felt when she noticed, riding in a classic car on the street below them, an unusual bird. 'Is that a macaw?' Quinn's dad David Kelleher yells down from the balcony. 'Yeah,' Jim Turner answers as the blue and gold macaw perches on the car's windshield. After David asks if Quinn can come down and meet the motoring macaw, Jim stops the car and introduces us to Admiral Nelson. 'He's a good companion,' Jim says as Admiral Nelson alternated between sitting on his arm and climbing up his shoulder to snuggle up near his neck. 'He's a very good companion.' Jim says Admiral Nelson first bonded with him when the bird was a baby, and for the past 25 years the macaw has followed his man everywhere. 'He's been in schools, he's been in hospitals, he's been in old folks' homes,' Jim says. 'Even when I'm in the shower he's on my shoulder.' And whenever Jim gets the car ready, Admiral Nelson jumps up on his perch in the passenger seat. The bird seems to relish the rides and the people they meet along the way. 'The worst thing for him was COVID. He had to stay home for a year and a half,' Jim says. 'That's when he started pulling feathers, which is what parrots do when they're unhappy.' But as soon as they returned to visiting others, Jim says Admiral Nelson's plucking decreased, feathers increased, and mood took flight. 'He's a flock animal,' Jim says. 'And people are his flock.' And today, Admiral Nelson is expanding his flock by raising one of his legs to include Quinn and her family. 'Kids started waving at him,' Jim says as Admiral Nelson lifts his leg again. 'So that's why he's waving now.' Quinn responds by raising her arm in return, before sharing more than a few smiles. 'Anytime I can put a smile on people's faces, it's a good day,' Jim tells them. So, the next time Quinn and her mom are searching for birds up in the trees, they'll also look down from their balcony on the road, in the hope of waving at their new feathered friend driving by.

The unique spectacle that's brought in £300k since it started

A much-loved duck race is set to return to the borough next month. Turton Rotary Club has been established in Bolton since 1968, with this year's iteration taking place at Bradshaw Cricket Club on Saturday, June 15, starting from 11pm. The Duck Race has raised more than £300,000 for charities and good causes since its inception. The event is one of the Turton Rotary Club's two key fundraisers, along with the famous Christmas Sleigh Appeal. Read more: Read more: Read more: The first prize is £1,000 cash, with several other cash prizes to be won. Tickets are £1 each sold not only by the club but by many charities and good causes who and the proceeds go directly to help their organisation. This year a Carr's Pastie Food Van will be on site, along with live coverage and entertainment from Bolton FM. For late entrants, tickets can be purchased on the day before 11am. A children's duck race on the day, which is free to enter, is also on the agenda. Jim Turner, one of the event organisers, said: "The duck race has become a local event in the calendar that many members of the public, young and not so young, look forward to. "It's great fun on the day to come along and cheer on your duck, but the real benefit of the event is that so many local charities can get to raise funds for themselves in a very simple way." For more information on Turton Rotary Club or the duck race, or if your organisation wants to get involved and sell tickets, or if your business can help us by becoming one of our event sponsors, contact the race promotor Peter Gaskell on 07860 237062 or email petergaskell99@

Former Texas A&M O-line coach named interim HC of the UFL's Memphis Showboats

Former Texas A&M O-line coach named interim HC of the UFL's Memphis Showboats Looking back at Texas A&M's best offensive lines over the last two decades, one O-line coach has consistently stood out outside of current mainstay Adam Cushing, who followed head coach Mike Elko from Duke before the 2024 season. Before Cushing arrived in College Station, Aggie fans consistently brought up veteran coach Jim Turner as the potential successor to Steve Adazzio. Going back to the HeyDey of Texas A&M's offensive line play during the Mike Sherman era, Turner ran the Aggie trenches in NFL fashion. From 2009-11, Texas A&M ranked among the nation's top 25 teams in total offense, averaging more than 440 yards per game each season. Regarding pass protection, Turner's coaching led to just nine sacks allowed during the 2011 season. After leaving the Aggies, Turner coached the Miami Dolphins offensive line from 2012-2013. Turner returned to Texas A&M in the same capacity from 2016-2018, working under coaches Kevin Sumlin and Jimbo Fisher. During the 2018 season, Turner's O-line paved the way for Texas A&M running back Trayveon Williams, who went on to lead the SEC in rushing yards (1760), rushing touchdowns (18), and total touchdowns (19). Since leaving Texas A&M for the second time, Turner's short one-year stint with the Cincinnati Bengals led to his last college job with Texas State before joining the Memphis Showboats of the UFL. In a shocking change, Showboats head coach Ken Whisenhunt unexpectedly stepped down for personal reasons, vaulting Jim Turner into the interim head coaching role. Turner's experience at both levels is the primary reason for his promotion, despite his never having served as an offensive or defensive coordinator.
