RuPaul's Drag Race's AI Use Sparks Fan Backlash
Signange of AI (Artificial Intelligence) is displayed during the MWC (Mobile World Congress), the ... More world's biggest mobile fair, in Barcelona on March 3, 2025. Surrounded by investment and innovation projects, the Mobile World Congress (MWC) kicks off today in Barcelona amid a context of euphoria but also tensions over artificial intelligence (AI), whose rapid advancement is shaking up the tech sector. (Photo by Manaure Quintero / AFP) (Photo by MANAURE QUINTERO/AFP via Getty Images) Earlier today, the RuPaul's Drag Race YouTube account released a short video titled "Jinkx & Plasma's Gay Adventure!" In this brief video, which was meant to mark the end of Pride Month, the two titular drag queens, who only provided their voices, are shown in an animated video going down a tunnel on a gondola set to Shirley Bassey's 'This is My Life.' As they go further down the tunnel, key moments from the show and its spin-off, RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars, are included in a montage designed to evoke nostalgia for long-time fans. Initially, this was a clever and well-thought-out idea, and a simple way to generate excitement about new content, and it did create buzz, though not for the reasons the channel might have hoped. You see, the execution of this video quickly came under fire due to the world's current controversial hot topic: the video was created with AI. HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA - MARCH 12: Host Jinkx Monsoon attends The Queerties 2024 on March 12, 2024 ... More in Hollywood, California. (Photo by) Within a few hours, fans commented on the video and on social media to voice their concerns about AI's use and the idea that it contradicts the essence of drag as an art form itself. For example, while many fans discussed the concept behind the video and its creative potential, they also highlighted the importance of a franchise that has featured many contestants and their dedication to drag as an art form. They pointed out that AI is a shortcut in a show that has championed and profited from the artistry and creativity of drag artists both domestically and internationally. The Cost of Cutting Corners Interestingly enough, some of the loudest critics of AI use were Drag Race YouTubers like JackFed and GreenGay. Many fans agreed and shared similar opinions and criticisms across social media and on the YouTube video itself. Many pointed out that, in addition to Drag Race generating millions annually from its success, many scenes in the video of some of the series' most iconic moments were also AI-generated, which sparked further discussion about the need to pay artists. This was because the AI-generated content was altered, edited, and combined from pre-existing material, which could have been avoided if a professional had been hired to create this tribute instead of AI. FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder I've spoken before about how Drag Race thrives through its willingness to engage in authenticity, and how the most successful artists from the show are able to connect with fans because of that same authenticity. Therefore, it's no surprise that there was such a large outcry from fans of the show. Still, where most brands would stand their ground and explain why their content posed no issue, or would make a long post outlining how the show was evolving and exploring new ways to engage with fans through the use of AI-generated content, Drag Race quickly removed the video from public view, which pacified many of the fans that offered critique, showing them that they were heard and listened to, despite no official statement coming from World of Wonder or Drag Race at this time. While brands are constantly innovating and trying to figure out how AI fits in, Drag Race knows that its multi-million-dollar franchise relies on its viewers and is willing to listen rather than push back when they have something to say. While we don't know the full extent of Drag Race and its potential future with AI, we do know that it's willing to put authenticity at the forefront of its brand, even if that means removing content. In the end, Drag Race conveys a clear message: We value artistry and authenticity.

Why Logo Legend Jinkx Monsoon loves playing villains as a trans woman
It's official: Broadway darling, two-time RuPaul's Drag Race winner, and powerhouse performer Jinkx Monsoon has been honored as the 2025 Logo Legend. "I probably like playing the villain because in my day to day life, you know…" she explained. "I'm a star on stage, and I still gotta walk home, and I'm a f*cking trans woman on the streets, right? Which does not afford me a lot of VIP treatment some of the time." She added, "When I'm playing the villain, I'm the one in f*cking charge, and everyone's scared for a change. That's probably why I like doing it." "I get that," Klemens agreed. "There's gotta be something nice where it's like, 'Oh, I'm not the one who could be a victim right now.'" "Right!" Jinkx replied. When playing a villain, "I'm not scared of anyone because I'm at the top of the food chain here." DeLa then proposed a toast, "Here's to Jinkx's villain era!" How Jinkx Monsoon Redefines Broadway On Her Own Terms
NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MAY 16: Jinkx Monsoon attends the 2025 Drama League Awards at The Ziegfeld ... More Ballroom on May 16, 2025 in New York City. (Photo by Valerie Terranova/FilmMagic) With Pride month only a couple days away, we're reminded of queer visibility across platforms and industries. Broadway is leading the charge with some of the most beloved alumnae of 'RuPaul's Drag Race.' Despite not winning the nomination, Jinkx Monsoon's eligibility for her role in 'Pirates! The Penzance Musical,' as an actress in a featured role in a musical category, was nothing short of historic. While drag queens and even other contestants on Drag Race have been featured on Broadway for years, with Jinkx even having a historic run as Mama Morton in 'Chicago' in 2023, this marked the first time that a drag queen was ever considered in a gendered acting category. Before Jinkx had her Broadway debut on Chicago, Peppermint, who competed and landed in the top four of season 9 of Drag Race, helped set the stage for her eligibility by being a trailblazer as the first openly trans woman to originate a principal Broadway role as Pythio in the Go Go's jukebox musical 'Head Over Heels' in 2018. This was historic, not only for her role being central to the show, but due to Peppermint proving that trans people were talented enough to be leads and not just in the chorus. SAN FRANCISCO, CA - APRIL 18: Cast members salute the audience during the curtain call for the ... More pre-Broadway engagement of "Head Over Heels" at the Curran Theatre on April 18, 2018 in San Francisco, California. (Photo by) In the past, people have debated on what roles gender non-conforming actors should be nominated for, and for Jinkx, a trans-femme nonbinary person, to considered for a tony nomination in the 'actress in a featured role' category, a category that reflects her identity, is already a huge deal. So often, institutions and voting boards have struggled to accommodate and reflect actors that exist outside of being cisgender or binary. Her seriously being considered alongside cisgender actresses serves as proof that gender expansive and non-conforming actors can and do co-exist in categories that have already been established. There doesn't need to be a complete overhaul of the awards or how they're delved out, gender trans and gender expansive people can exist right inside of those categories and there doesn't have to be any compromise or watering down of who they are to do it. There have been trans, genderfluid, and even gender non-conforming actors that have been nominated and even won Tony nominations, like with Alex Newell for their role in 'Shucked,' and L Morgan Lee for her role in 'A Strange Loop,' Jinkx places herself in a long list of performers that are setting a new standard for what it means to be trans and even a drag queen in the spotlight. Jinkx Monsoon and Peppermint show that trans and gender non-conforming people don't need separate systems or categories to showcase their talent. They serve as a reminder that existing as your authentic self not only serves as its own reward, but it also allows other people to take notice and feel inspired. While neither of them may have Tony nominations at the moment, they show that authenticity and visibility can serve as their reward and legacy. This is only the beginning for trans people on Broadway, and there's sure to be even opportunities for nominations for actresses like Jinkx in the future.
