Police officers told not to post photos in uniform on social media

Police officers in Tamil Nadu have been directed not to post their photographs in uniform in social media handles. They have also been told to refrain from sharing confidential information and details of criminal cases in interviews to Television/YouTube channels, podcasts etc in personal capacity. In an order issued to all officers in the rank of Superintendent of Police and above in the State, the Director-General of Police and Head of Police Force Shankar Jiwal said it had come to notice that some officers were posting official matters, including important duties and responsibilities, and their photographs in official uniform, on their personal social media handles. A few officers had given interviews to social media channels in their personal capacity and shared official information relating to cases, victims, accused persons, etc. 'It has also come to the knowledge that some officers attend private functions in official uniform and share sensitive official information,' Mr. Jiwal said and referred to the All India Services (Conduct) Rules and the Tamil Nadu Subordinate Police Officers' Conduct Rules which restrained them from doing so. Mr. Jiwal said going by the conduct rules a police officer invited or intending to participate in a television programme or deliver a broadcast talk should intimate to the government of the particulars relating to the programme or the subject on which he/she proposed to talk. If need be, the entire content to be published should be submitted to the authorities concerned for approval. The DGP said wherever required, approval of senior officers in hierarchy should be obtained by subordinate officers for vetting content and obtaining clearance for participation in private functions and interviews. In case of any violation, action would be taken under the provisions of the conduct rules. 'All officers shall strictly adhere to these instructions and also issue necessary instructions to others within their jurisdiction in this regard,' he said. According to police sources, another advisory was issued asking Commissioners/Superintendents of Police to give short video interviews explaining the content of official press releases issued on various matters.

T.N. police crack down on illegal immigrants

In an operation to weed out illegal immigrants, the Tamil Nadu police have intensified efforts to identify foreign nationals staying without valid documents in the State. In the last four months, more than 200 illegal immigrants, mostly Bangladeshi nationals, were arrested and sent to jail. Director-General of Police & Head of the Police Force, Shankar Jiwal, said in the last four years, 364 illegal immigrants were arrested by the local police based on inputs shared by intelligence agencies. A majority of those arrested belonged to Bangladesh and found to be working in Tirupur, Coimbatore, Erode, Chennai etc. There was also many Sri Lankan and Nigerian nationals among those taken into custody. Cases under the provisions of the Passport Act and Foreigners Act were registered against them. 'A foreign national is treated as an illegal immigrant if he/she is found to be overstaying beyond the permitted visa period, or found without a valid work permit or other required documents. Illegal immigrants are prosecuted under the Passport Act and Foreigners Act, and since the offences are cognizable, they are arrested and remanded in judicial custody,' Mr Jiwal said. Upon arrest, the details of the case and custody were communicated to the concerned detainee's family through the embassy or consulate of the respective nation. In turn, the national embassy or consulate concerned would initiate necessary action in consultation with local law enforcement authorities, under the existing legal processes. Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, was the nodal ministry for matters connecting with illegal migrants and legal action against them. Asked how the illegal immigrants managed to get local identity documents like Aadhaar, Bank Accounts, PAN and Passports etc, the DGP said they often used rental agreements and would then acquire proof of address and identity using some fake or forged documents. Action against agents Stringent action was being taken against local contacts or travel agents who assisted the foreign nationals in obtaining fake identities. Several cases were booked against those indulging in preparation of fake passports, Aadhaar cards, Voter Identity cards etc. As regards Bangladesh nationals, it was found there was no particular group or agency facilitating their stay here. 'They usually took help from their relatives or friends already settled here for getting employment in textile or construction industry. After settling down for a few months, they would opening bank accounts, applying PAN card or even passport using fake documents.' Dismissing apprehensions that some foreign nationals visiting India on tourist visa were indulging in promoting the Tablighi ideology, he said so such activity was reported in the last 4 years due to the persistent efforts of the police. The State police and intelligence agencies were on alert to counter threats to internal security. After visa to Pakistan nationals were cancelled in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack on April 22, 2025, special teams were formed to identity and extradite the nationals of the neighbouring country. While those who had come on medical visa had left even before police intervention, three Pakistanis were allowed to stay after they claimed Indian nationality and the matter was referred to the Ministry of External Affairs for advise and appropriate action, Mr. Jiwal said.
