10 more meds for diabetes, cancer, other illnesses added to VAT-free list

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has added more medicines for cancer, diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, and mental illness in its list of drugs exempted from value-added tax (VAT). Under FDA Advisory No. 2025-0510 dated June 4, the FDA included two medicines for cancer, two for diabetes, one for high cholesterol, two for hypertension, and three for mental illness. For cancer, the medicines included in the VAT exemption are: Tegafur + Gimeracil + Oteracil Potassium capsule (20 mg/5.8 mg/19.6 mg) Tegafur + Gimeracil + Oteracil Potassium capsule (25 mg/7.25 mg/24.5 mg) For diabetes, the following medicines are exempted: Metformin Hydrochloride + Teneligliptin extended-release tablet (as hydrobromide hydrate) (1 g/20 mg) Metformin Hydrochloride + Teneligliptin extended release tablet (as hydrobromide hydrate) (500 mg/20 mg) The following is included for high cholesterol: Atorvastatin (as calcium) + Fenobribrate film-coated tablet (20 mg/160 mg) For hypertension, the following medicines are included: Metoprolol tartrate + Ivabradine film-coated tablet (as hydrochloride) (50 mg/5 mg) Metoprolol tartrate + Ivabradine film-coated tablet (as hydrochloride) (25 mg/5 mg) Meanwhile, the following are the medicines included for mental illnesses: Lamotrigine dispersible/chewable tablet (5 mg) Lamotrigine oral dispersible tablet (25 mg) Lamotrigine tablet (25 mg) Meanwhile, the FDA removed the medicine Baricitinib (2 mg and 4 mg) for cancer from the list. —Joahna Lei Casilao/AOL, GMA Integrated News

PCG sends off PH vessel for US-Japan maritime exercise

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Friday conducted a send-off ceremony for the BRP Teresa Magbanua (MRRV-9701), which will join the second trilateral maritime exercise with the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and the Japan Coast Guard (JCG). The exercise will be held in the vicinity waters of Kagoshima, Japan today. According to the Coast Guard, the participants will also conduct a Search and Rescue Exercise in the vicinity waters of Kinko-Bay. 'The PCG recognizes the significant contributions of USCG and JCG in improving the skills and expertise of its men and women through various human resource development programs,' it said in a statement. PCG added that it seeks a stronger collaboration and deeper diplomatic relations with its counterparts through the exercise. 4 suspected terrorists killed in Northern Samar clash

Four suspected members of the New People's Army were killed in a clash with state forces in Northern Samar, the Philippine Army (PA) 8th Infantry Division said Wednesday. According to the army, the encounter took place in Barangay Nagoocan, Catubig on June 3, Tuesday following reports that armed men were allegedly conducting extortion activities in the area. State forces also recovered three firearms following the encounter. The army said they are working to identify the suspected rebels and are coordinating with authorities to notify their families. Meanwhile, state forces discovered a cache of firearms and explosives in Barangay Roxas, Catubig on June 2. The PA said this is based on information by former rebels who are now under the government's Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program after surrendering to authorities. Authorities recovered two M14 rifles, one M16 rifle, one M653 rifle, three improvised hand grenades, ammunition magazines, a bandolier, a pistol holster and medical paraphernalia. — Joahna Lei Casilao/BAP, GMA Integrated News
