ICE detainees housed at Broome County Jail

TOWN OF DICKINSON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Broome County Jail is now home to ICE detainees. Sheriff Fred Akshar says the correctional facility is currently holding 42 ICE detainees, although the number fluctuates from day to day. Akshar says the arrangement is similar to one it has with the U.S. Marshal's Service to house federal inmates when necessary. Thursday morning, the jail had 26 incarcerated people on behalf of U.S. Marshals. Akshar says the jail has the available space and that the federal government pays Broome County $110 per inmate per day, money that goes into Broome County's general fund. Molinaro on Capitol Hill for FTA nomination hearing

(WIVT/WBGH) – Josh Riley's predecessor was back on Capitol Hill today for a nomination hearing to be the head of the Federal Transit Administration. Republican Marc Molinaro is President Trump's pick to lead the agency that oversees regulations on public transportation, including buses, subways and ferries. Molinaro discussed his previous efforts at all levels of government to support transportation issues. He was accompanied to the hearing by the head of the Transportation Workers Union which has endorsed him. Molinaro says transit systems must embrace technology and modernize systems. 'To fully realize this vision, we must drive innovation, streamline permitting, boost performance and fully harness technology to transform how we plan, build and operate transit. A modern, safe, reliable and accessible transit system in urban centers and rural communities underground, over roads and across waterways will advance America and Americans,' said Molinaro. Molinaro, who has been a longtime advocate for disability rights, says he will also work to make public transit more accessible. No word on when he will be confirmed by the full Senate. If confirmed, he plans to continue living in Upstate New York and will commute to DC. BOCES holds annual Job Readiness Fair

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – BOCES students held mock job interviews with dozens of local companies, to get ready for the real thing. Wednesday was BOCES' annual Job Readiness Fair. Students bring their resumes and talk with local job seekers about what it takes to get into their line of work. Some of the local businesses included Visions, the Rumble Ponies, Weis, Raymond, and others. It's a chance for the students to get real interview experience and hear constructive criticism from the interviewers themselves. Student Unique Wood says the job fair helped her become more confident in her interviewing skills, like eye contact and holding a conversation. 'Even with this not being an actual, real job setting, it still has the same effects of it I guess I'd say. You still want to again, have that confidence, you still want to talk to them the same way, treat them the same way. Treat them as if you were going in there like you're getting a job. Like you're going there to win a job,' said Wood. Wood says she interviewed with Visions and Weis markets and both went well. The employers setup displays, sharing information about their careers and the education and training you need to get there. Dennis James presents ‘The Lost World'

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – An organist who plays with two hands and two feet has dedicated his life to preserving silent film music scores. Dennis James is joining the Binghamton Theater Organ Society on Sunday for 'The Lost World.' Based on the book by Arthur Conan Doyle, the 1925 film The Lost World is a silent science fiction film that uncovers a land full of prehistoric animals. It was the inspiration for modern movies such as King Kong. James has been playing the organ for over 50 years, becoming a professional when he was just 16 years old. He has always had an affinity for silent films as well. James says he doesn't change anything about the original music, he plays it the way it was intended to be heard years ago. 'I'm doing it the way it was, and the films haven't died. When we do it the way it was meant to be, this is what movies are. Sound movies are not what movies are, movies were meant, were invited, to be done with live music. So, we're just doing show movies,' said James. The performance will take place at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for veterans or members. Students can see the show for free thanks to the Early Owego Antique Center. BU art exhibit celebrates Women's History Month

VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Binghamton University celebrated Women's history month with a special art exhibit that highlights the essence of heroines. BU students, faculty, and staff submitted artwork inspired by this year's theme, 'a rainbow in someone's cloud.' There were different categories of artwork, from visual art like paintings and drawings, to performing arts, cinema, and graphic design. One winner was selected for every category and was awarded a $250 prize. The winner of the writing category, Riley Thomas, submitted a poem called 'we are girls together,' about her relationship with her two sisters. 'So, I am often doing my best to be that rainbow for people. That is what my entire staff, like our whole is in our program. And so, when I was thinking about, okay who is my rainbow, my sisters were like the first two people to absolutely pop into my brain and really guided this experience and my writing. Obviously, it's about them,' said Thomas. Thomas says a rainbow is a sign of hope. The event was hosted by the Kaschak Institute for Social Justice for Women and Girls.
