Curlers Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant are the first athletes named to Canada's team for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. The husband-and-wife team from Chestermere, Alta., will represent Canada in mixed doubles curling at the Games, Curling Canada and the Canadian Olympic Team announced Monday. Peterman and Gallant provisionally earned their nomination to the Olympic team by winning the Canadian mixed doubles trials in January. They secured Canada's spot in the Olympic tournament with a sixth-place finish last week at the world mixed doubles curling championship in Fredericton. Seven countries joined host Italy in the 10-team field based on qualification points from combined placements at the 2024 and 2025 mixed doubles championships. The final two spots will be filled following a December qualification event in Kelowna, B.C. Mixed doubles curling will take place Feb. 4-10 n Cortina d'Ampezzo. Canada has also secured spots in the women's and men's Olympic curling events based on its combined ranking at the 2024 and 2025 world championships for each gender.

FREDERICTON – Canada was knocked out of medal contention at the world mixed doubles curling championship after a 7-5 loss to Estonia in Friday's playoff qualifier. Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant of Chestermere, Alta., gave up three in the fourth and couldn't recover, despite scoring two in the fifth. Estonia's Marie Kaldvee and Harri Lill advanced to face Italy in the semifinals later Friday. Austria meets Scotland in the other semi. Canada will play the United States later Friday to determine fifth place. The medal games are set for Saturday. Combined results from this year's event and the 2024 world playdowns determine the seven countries that will join host Italy at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics. Canada's top-six finish in Fredericton, along with last year's fifth-place showing in Oestersund, Sweden, secures the country a spot in the Olympic field. Canada looked poised for a win and second place in the group, but Scotland's team of men's world champion Bruce Mouat and Jennifer Dodds tied the match with three points in the eighth end and stole one in the ninth to complete the comeback. Both teams finished the round-robin at 7-2, but the head-to-head win gave Scotland the tiebreaker. Italy (9-0) beat the Netherlands 8-5. The Italians were already assured of top spot in Group A and a spot in Friday's semifinals. Peterman and Gallant, from Chestermere, Alta., will face the second-seeded team in Group B in the preliminary round of the playoffs on Friday, while Scotland will face Group B's third-ranked team. The preliminary-round winners will advance to the semifinals. Group B teams played in Thursday's final draw.
