28 students accused of vandalizing high school with flour, hot dogs, sardines
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Leaders from Livingston Parish Public Schools (LPPS) said 31 people have been identified in connection with a school vandalism using food items, Vaseline and toilet paper. According to LPPS, 28 of those people were students. The vandalism reportedly occurred on Friday, April 25, at Springfield High School, with the first group of people entering the campus around 12:15 a.m. before a second group arrived at around 2:42 a.m. Some of the damage to the campus included condiments and food being spread in classrooms and hallways. The school system said students entered through a window and threw flour, glitter, ketchup, chili, hot dogs and mustard in hallways and classrooms. Vaseline was placed on items, sardines were put in the ceiling and rugs, and cups and toilet paper were thrown around the campus. Tables were turned over, soil was found on concrete walkways and items were located on the roof. 'The action taken by these individuals is not a prank. It is vandalism to school property, plain and simple, and this type of behavior is not acceptable,' Superintendent Jody Purvis said. 'These individuals have disrespected their fellow students, the school's employees and members of the Springfield community. Furthermore, their actions caused damage and disruption.' Deputies assisted school leaders with the investigation. Sheriff Jason Ard said school administrators will determine disciplinary measures. School leaders said students will be disciplined based on the severity of their participation in the vandalism, with restitution required for those accused of destroying and damaging property. 'I want to thank the Springfield High and Springfield Elementary employees for their willingness to return the campus to a safe, healthy learning environment, allowing instruction for all students to resume as quickly as possible,' Purvis said. Greater Baton Rouge area schools adjust calendars to make up winter storm days
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Schools in and around Baton Rouge are adjusting their calendars to recover instructional time lost due to last week's winter storm. The Greater Baton Rouge area got snow totals averaging nearly 8 to 9 inches on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Because of the winter weather conditions, schools in the Baton Rouge area announced school closures. East Baton Rouge and Livingston Parish school districts announced schedule modifications, including converting half days to full days and repurposing professional development time for instruction. Feb. 19 will change from a half day to a full school day. May 20 and May 21 will change from a half day to a full school day. May 23 is a half day and the last day for students, teachers and support staff. Livingston Parish Schools will restore a regular class day on either Feb. 11, 12, or 13 to recover time lost due to last week's winter weather. A planned professional development day will be converted into a full instructional day for all students and staff. 'We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but we feel it is important that we use this time for instruction with our students,' Livingston Parish Public Schools Superintendent Jody Purvis said.
