GAA take drastic action to fill Leinster hurling final amid RTE pundits arguing it should be taken OUT of Croke Park

THE Leinster Council are gifting 20,000 tickets for its upcoming hurling final to underage GAA teams. While batches of free tickets are often made available to the next generation of Gaelic football and hurling players, that is a particularly sizeable quantity. 2 TJ Reid, Derek Lyng and Co await Galway on Sunday week 2 Joe Canning said on Sunday that he'd 'love' to see it moved to a smaller ground to ensure it has a good atmosphere Credit: @TheSundayGame It would appear to be a proactive measure given doubts over how many fans from Galway and Kilkenny will take on the hefty expense of venturing up to Dublin for the June 8 decider. After Speaking on The Sunday Game Live, the Galway great reasoned: "I'd love to see it out of Croke Park, being honest about it. "I think the whole atmosphere…it's too big for the crowd that shows up for a Leinster final. Imagine a full Tullamore or Portlaoise instead? Read More On GAA "You'd get a full house there alright. Remember we played you guys there a few times? (At which point he beckoned to Jackie Tyrrell who was nodding in agreement beside him). "It would add to the whole thing. At a smaller ground you'll get a better atmosphere - and it's not going all the way up to Dublin. "But having said that it's great to get a day out in Croke Park." The moment was clipped by The Sunday Game's social team and judging off the replies, Canning's suggestion received broad support. Most read in GAA Hurling Conor Counihan threw another potential setting into the mix, tweeting: "Thurles would be ideal. "Smack bang between both counties and so easily accessible. RTE pundit Joe Canning urges GAA to make huge change for Leinster hurling final as fans 'totally agree' "And before anyone says Thurles isn't in Leinster, both sides played in Leinster final replay in Thurles before (in 2018)." Upon yesterday's announcement, Leinster Council chairman Derek Kent explained the details around it with applications required by 12pm on June 4. He outlined: "This is a celebration of our young players and an investment in the future of our games. "We want every child involved in GAA to feel connected to the bigger picture – to see our players in action, feel the energy of championship days, and be inspired their hurling heroes. "By offering 20,000 free tickets to our players, we're not only giving them a great day out, we're showing them they belong to something special." The giveaway is open to groups of 10 kids comprised of the U14 age grade or younger. Each group must be accompanied by a minimum of two adults. Why Waterford's veterans chances of an All-Ireland title are disappearing

Tipp's former All-Ireland winning boss Liam Sheedy fears Waterford's ageing heroes have missed their chance of ever winning an All-Ireland. The Deise contested the 2017 and 2020 deciders but lost out to Galway and Limerick respectively. And since then they have flopped in Munster - finishing fourth in 2022, 2024 and 2025, fifth in 2023, losing a quarter final to Clare in 2021. That backdoor route has disappeared and the intense nature of Munster means the teams finishing fourth and fifth in the province are ruthlessly dispatched from the Championship by the end of May. And Sheedy fears for the team now. He said: 'For any manager going into the Munster Championship, success is getting into the All-Ireland series. 'For the second year in a row, Waterford managed to win their first game which is a big thing in the round-robin and you thought that might have given them momentum. 'They had chances early on in today's game to push on a wee bit more but they needed to open up a much bigger gap. 'For Waterford and for Clare when you don't get out of Munster, it is not seen as a good year and for players like Stephen Bennett, Tadhg de Burca and Conor Prunty, you just wonder if the best chance of getting to the very top is passing them out.'

Cut out mistakes and Waterford 'have a chance' of dumping Rebels out

Joe Canning is tipping Waterford to shock Cork in this Sunday's Championship do-or-die showdown in the Pairc. The Deise need to beat Cork to stay in this year's Championship. It's a win or go out scenario for Waterford. If they draw, they are out. Win and they will make the preliminary quarter final stage of the All-Ireland while retaining the belief they can find their way into the last four in the country. 'But they need to stop making small little mistakes because that kind of eats into the mentality and the confidence and they need a little bit more composure under pressure. 'Sometimes when your back is to the wall, you are at your best.' But yesterday's defeat to Tipp leaves doubt in their head, according to Dublin's Liam Rushe. He said: 'Without a doubt they will have that bit of uncertainty. 'Yes, Tipp were at home in Thurles but Waterford definitely would have been targeting this and putting their energy into it. 'I would never write Waterford off. A forward line of Dessie Hutchinson, Jamie Barron and Stephen Bennett gives you three of Ireland's top forwards. 'So I wouldn't put it past them to go down to Pairc ui Chaoimh and give it a real rattle.' Canning went on to praise Liam Cahill's new look Tipp side who will reach the Munster final if Cork draw or lose to Waterford. Canning said: 'They are there on merit and they seem to be buying in to what Liam and his backroom team are telling him. 'The crowd are back.'

Cork can shrug off no-show in Limerick

Joe Canning and Liam Rushe believe that Limerick's annihilation of Cork will do more to boost the Treaty's self-belief that rattle Rebel confidence. The seven-in-a-row Munster chasers had lost their last two championship games to their neighbours, including the 2024 All-Ireland semi-final. But they scorched out of the blocks at the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday, building a 14-point half-time lead that was 16 by the finish - 3-26 to 1-16. "I don't think so," said former Galway forward Canning on The Sunday Game when asked whether the reversal would damage a much-hyped Cork psychologically. "I just didn't see the same aggressiveness, the same sharpness that I would have seen in them in other games. "I don't know if they are too worried about losing today." Joe Canning does not think that Cork will suffer any long term effects from their heavy defeat to Limerick but he does feel that the fear factor is back for The Treaty County. #RTEGAA #TheSundayGame — The Sunday Game (@TheSundayGame) May 18, 2025 Former Dublin defender Liam Rushe agreed, saying: "It's almost easier to write it off. "Because they know themselves they just did not turn up. "It's not like 'We went toe to toe, we both gave our best performances and we lost'. "They came up short. Okay, that might have an impact further down the line but they will want to come out and put their best foot forward the next day. "It will give them that bit of motivation." As for Limerick, a seventh Munster final appearance in a row has all but been secured and they can rotate their squad against already eliminated Clare. "It will give Limerick huge belief," said Canning. "I wouldn't say it was gone but that fear factor of playing Limerick is definitely back.

Irish struggle at Quail Hollow but Pádraig Harrington remains evergreen

How did the world's top 10 fare on day one of the US PGA Championship? Not great. For the first time since 1994, not one of them was in the top 10 on the leader board at the end of the opening round. ' Rory McIlroy was put through the wringer , Xander Schauffele couldn't keep up, Justin Thomas was mangled, Brooks Koepka was barbecued,' writes Denis Walsh, McIlroy now in a battle to make the cut. Those mud balls didn't help lighten the mood. Pádraig Harrington shot two over par, the same as Shane Lowry and one better than McIlroy, in what was, remarkably, his 86th appearance in a major tournament . His 'endurance is peerless,' writes Denis, and backed by a swing that gets stronger with age, Harrington still believes he can beat the best. One particular bookmakers was so convinced that Cork would prove to be the best this championship season , they paid out on them winning the All-Ireland a few weeks ago. 'Madness,' says Joe Canning who previews their meeting with Limerick at the Gaelic Grounds this Sunday, Joe edging towards Limerick making it seven Munster titles in-a-row. In rugby, Gerry Thornley previews Munster's must-win URC game against Benetton tonight, and Nathan Johns hears from Harry McNulty, Ireland's Sevens captain in Paris last summer, who describes the IRFU's decision to discontinue its men's Sevens programme as 'disrespectful to the Olympic programme'. READ MORE In racing, Brian O'Connor salutes Rachael Blackmore, who announced her retirement earlier this week, describing her as 'perhaps the most significant female figure to ever ride a racehorse' . But while it is true that she 'cracked the glass ceiling forever', 'presumptions that it is in smithereens smack of complacency'. The jockey's room, he says, 'remains largely a male preserve'. In athletics, Ian O'Riordan talks to Hiko Tonosa who is hoping to regain his Irish marathon record after it was broken by Peter Lynch last month. Tonosa set his mark at the Dublin Marathon last October, a day that was, he says, 'like the start of my life'. And after Donald Trump likened the gift of a $400 million jet from Qatar to a golf gimme, as only Donald Trump could, Johnny Watterson looks at the often contentious history of the gimme in the sport . At times, it's been more 'psychological warfare' than 'a gesture of goodwill'. TV Watch : Sky Sports Golf continues its coverage of the PGA Championship from 1pm, and there's athletics action in the form of the Doha Diamond League at 5pm on Virgin Media Two and BBC2. Aston Villa continue their push for a Champions League spot when they play Spurs in the Premier League (Sky Sports, 7.30pm), and fourth plays sixth in the Premier Division with the meeting of Bohemians and Shelbourne (Virgin Media Two, 7.45pm). And in rugby, Munster will attempt to seal a spot in the URC play-offs when they play Benetton in Cork (TG4 and Premier Sports 1, 8pm).
