Adaptive golfers showcase limitless abilities in world's ‘most adaptive' sport
Hawk Ridge Golf Club just outside Orillia was the site of a special adaptive golf event on Saturday that showcased the abilities of golfers from various disability groups.
40 golfers from across the province were on the course and 30 of them had a wide range of conditions, such as amputated limbs, cerebral palsy, or sensory issues.
The event was organized by ParaSport Ontario, Paragolf Ontario, and the Golf Association of Ontario.
'Golf is the first sport in the history of the world that actually had a handicapping system for a long time, so anybody can play with anybody,' said Joe Millage from ParaSport Ontario and Paragolf Ontario. 'Our goal today is to raise awareness of who plays and who can be good at the game of golf and who might consider getting into it or getting back into it.'
Among the golfers was Tess Trojan, who competed at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi.
'Today, it's more about inclusivity. Because all of us who play golf, we can show our abilities and how well we can play,' said Trojan. 'It showcases all abilities and everyone's welcome.'
Trojan was joined by her father and 'Daddy Caddy,' Mike, who also caddied for her at the Abu Dhabi Games.
'With ParaSport, it's great to get out to see everyone having a great time on the golf course regardless of their disability and ability on the golf course, so we're happy to be here,' he said.
Chester Wilson, an amateur ParaGolfer, managed to maintain his love for golf despite suffering a life-altering injury.
'I always loved playing golf and I knew golf was a very adaptive sport to take up. So I went online, googled Paragolf Ontario, and sure enough, found this organization,' recalled Wilson. 'I love the challenge and I just love the community and the people you meet out on the golf course. And of course, everyone loves long drives and sinking putts at the end of the day.'
Saturday's event was among the eleven other ParaGolf events this summer.
Paragolf Ontario supports athletes by helping them find the right adaptive equipment and professionals who can teach them how to play the game without minimal limitations.
