The signing of Russell Wilson, and then the first-round trade-up for Jaxson Dart to eventually replace him, figures as the centerpiece issue for the Giants season. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. On the one hand, the New York Giants in 2025 simply have to get better than they were a year ago ... because it would be so difficult to be worse. Advertisement On the other hand, GM Joe Schoen really only made one major change to the Giants offensive lineup ... and if it doesn't turn out to be good enough? Joe Schoen might not be the Giants GM after this year. The signing of Russell Wilson, and then the first-round trade-up for Jaxson Dart to eventually replace him, figures as the centerpiece issue for the season. Yes, on the other side of the ball, the Giants added a blue-chip prospect in Abdul Carter, two quality starters in the secondary, and third-round tackle Darius Alexander. But it will be impossible to ignore the failed commitment to Daniel Jones ... and the moves that now make it seem like the offensive issues were all his fault. Advertisement After all, New York will likely return 10 starters on offense, exchanging only at that one - very important - position. So ... Schoen is gambling that the bulk of the offense's problems fell on Jones' shoulders ... and that Wilson will fix all of that. There is, frankly, plenty of room for this offense to fall short of even modest expectations. Indeed, that's why some observers are already mapping out the "when'' of the Dart takeover. And on that note, we will add this: When a team starts a rookie QB, a GM often is able to go to ownership and ask for more time on the job. After all, "We've got a rookie! We've got to develop him!'' Advertisement We're not sure Giants ownership - which entered this calendar year with a wobbly commitment to Schoen and to coach Brian Daboll - is going to fall for that. Tyrone Tracy Jr. Named Giants' Breakout Candidate
Tyrone Tracy Jr. Named Giants' Breakout Candidate originally appeared on Athlon Sports. New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen was almost right. It's hard to grant the Giants a victory for how the Saquon Barkley decision went down. With the Philadelphia Eagles, he amassed over 2,000 yards and won a Super Bowl, trampling his former team in the process. But Schoen wanted to get starter-level production from a younger, cheaper back than Barkley. In Round 5 of the 2024 NFL Draft, he found his answer. Advertisement Running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. got a late start behind Devin Singletary but was among New York's strong rookie class, taking the veteran's job by midseason and racing away with the opportunity. He'll start in 2025, armed with fourth-round rookie Cam Skattebo as a stylistic complement. The Giants' second-year starter was named a breakout candidate by Yardbarker as he looks to entrench himself in his role. 'New York's starting quarterback is unclear this season, but Tracy should see most of the work at running back,' Seth Trachtman wrote. 'The dynamic second-year player had over 1,100 yards from scrimmage last season and has more ability.' Advertisement Tracy ran 192 times for 839 yards and five scores in 2024. In the passing game, he generated an additional 284 yards and one touchdown. He and receiver Malik Nabers became the third pair of rookies to each cross 1,000 yards from scrimmage. Skattebo figures to take some of his third-down work away, given his competency as a pass-catcher and strength as a pass protector. Tracy, though, is a former college receiver and offers more big-play potential due to his elite athleticism. Tracy has earned the right to start, and barring excellence from Skattebo, his job is likely safe. Still, there is work to be done. His instincts looked better inside than most anticipated, but he was less effective rushing outside the tackles. He must take a step forward on passing downs, too, to truly hold off Skattebo. With that said, Tracy is one of New York's promising young talents and a solid reason for optimism heading into 2025. Giants' Offensive Improvements Fall on Russell Wilson's Shoulders
Giants' Offensive Improvements Fall on Russell Wilson's Shoulders originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As the NFL transitions from the player-acquisition phase of the offseason to the ramp-up toward real action, there is time to reflect on the teams that improved the most in March and April. Advertisement Among them is undoubtedly the New York Giants, who went from disastrous to below-average under center by signing Russell Wilson. In due time, Jaxson Dart will replace him. On the other side of the ball, the Giants added a blue-chip prospect in Abdul Carter, two quality starters in the secondary, and third-round tackle Darius Alexander. On paper, this team is destined to win more games, even with one of the league's hardest schedules. However, there is plenty of room for this offense to fall short of expectations. Wilson is an easy upgrade at quarterback, but his limitations are real and, often, debilitating. He can struggle in the quick game, prefers to avoid the middle of the field, and can try and make plays his athleticism can no longer pull off. That isn't the end of the world, but New York didn't do him any favors, either. The Giants' offseason strategy will reveal the truth about general manager Joe Schoen's evaluation of his offense. Advertisement New York will return 10 starters on offense, exchanging only at its most important position. Schoen is gambling that the entirety of the offense's problems fell on Daniel Jones' shoulder. His confidence isn't necessarily valid. Running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. was promising as a rookie, but even the addition of Cam Skattebo fails to make it an above-average backfield. Receiver Malik Nabers is a star, although Darius Slayton and Wan'Dale Robinson are adequate (and limited) starters. Tight end and center project to be holes, and neither guard spot possesses much upside. A year ago, the Giants' offensive line was fine until Andrew Thomas got hurt. Can that unit survive another Thomas injury? Can Wilson? New York made a handful of quality moves to make its defense one of the league's best. But there are still plenty of paths to this offense falling flat, which doesn't serve Wilson, Dart, or Schoen well in a pivotal season. NFL analyst regrades New York Giants' 2022 draft class
New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen has four drafts under his belt since taking over in 2022. His first two were received as lukewarm while his last two have been graded as successes. CBS Sports draft analyst Pete Prisco recently did a regrade on the 2022 NFL draft, dropping his original grade from B+ to a B. 2022 Grade: B+ The Skinny: They had 11 picks and the first nine are still on the roster. That's good drafting. But the problem is they missed on their second first pick, tackle Evan Neal. He has struggled in his career after being the seventh player picked that year. They did get starters in edge Kayvon Thibodeaux, who was taken fifth overall in the draft, slot receiver Wan'Dale Robinson (second) and linebacker Micah McFadden(fifth). They also have a lot of backups from that draft who have played, including third-round offensive lineman Josh Ezeudu, who has 10 starts, corner Cor'Dale Flott (third), tight end Daniel Bellinger, who came in the fourth and defensive lineman D.J. Davidson, who was taken in the fifth. How I did: I loved the pick of Neal, which clearly hasn't worked out. I thought he could be among the best in football. That's a whiff. I liked the class because of Neal and Thibodeaux and Robinson. I didn't like the pick of Ezeudu in the third. New Grade: B Advertisement It's easy to agree with Prisco on many of his points here, especially on Evan Neal. They landed some solid talent that has already made their presence known with the club. The Giants exercised Kayvon Thibodeaux's fifth-year option but declined Neal's. That doesn't mean Neal is done with the Giants, however. They will shift him inside to guard this season and his career could take on a different path. Of all the picks, though, Micah McFadden is the only one that can be seen as a bargain. May 27-28 May 30 June 2-3 June 5 June 9-10 June 12-13 Here are some points of interest to keep an eye on: Quarterbacks General manager Joe Schoen went to great lengths to revamp his quarterback room this offseason. 10-time Pro Bowler Russell Wilson will get the first team snaps followed by Jameis Winston, rookie Jaxson Dart, and Tommy DeVito. All eyes will be on this group. Defensive front 7 Where and how will rookie stud linebacker Abdul Carter line up? How about Kayvon Thibodeaux? Will rookie lineman Darius Alexander be elevated to the first team? Lots to see here. Secondary Schoen added free agents at safety (Jevon Holland) and at cornerback (Paulson Adebo). It will be interesting to see how they mesh with Deonte Banks, Dru Phillips, and Tyler Nubin, should he be available to participate. Cam Skattebo The rookie running back is noted for his high motor. Although the drills in this phase are non-contact, this will be the public's first exposure to a player who could be a culture-changer.
