FLAMES RETOOL TRACKER: Under-25 power rankings at left wing

Article content Left wing is, by far, the most crowded column on the Calgary Flames ' forward depth chart. Article content Article content The Flames have plenty of intriguing prospects on the port side. Article content That sets up a logjam at the big-league level, with Jonathan Huberdeau signed for six more seasons and Joel Farabee, Martin Pospisil and Yegor Sharangovich all established as regulars in their mid-20s. While we list Connor Zary as a centre, he is also in this conversation. Article content Article content This is, of course, one of those good problems to have. The Flames would love for these youngsters to force them into some difficult decisions, whether that's down the road or as soon as next season. Article content Here's how we power-rank Calgary's crop of under-25 talents on the left wing. Article content Age: 20 Article content Working in his favour: With a blend of size, strength, skill and speed, this dude has all the ingredients to be a force as a power forward. Article content Still working on it: Honzek will be first to admit he needs to crank up his consistency to take advantage of his tools. Injuries have been an issue over the past couple of seasons, so durability is also a concern. Article content Big-league potential: Top-six forward remains the aim. Article content There will certainly be some debate about Honzek's perch atop this list, although there wouldn't have been any argument last fall, when he was the biggest bright spot at Flames training camp, earning an opening-night gig as a teen. He so far has appeared in five NHL games. While his minor-league stat line was underwhelming — eight goals and 21 points in 53 outings with the Wranglers — remember that it was his first pro season. Article content 2. Aydar Suniev Article content Article content Suniev played plenty of right wing during his two collegiate campaigns but this up-and-coming lefty logged his NHL debut on his natural side, so that's where we decided to list him. He potted 20 goals this past season with the UMass Minutemen, one of only seven NCAA sophomores to hit that mark in 2024-25. His one-timer is absolutely wicked.

Calgary Flames determined to bounce back in Battle of Alberta

The Calgary Flames are coming off arguably their best performance of the season. And coming off a loss. An unlikely combo, no doubt, but the Flames can't afford to feel defeated as they digest Thursday's result against the Dallas Stars and head north for an absolutely crucial instalment of the Battle of Alberta. With the Flames trying to chase down the St. Louis Blues for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference, this would be a very bad time for back-to-back defeats. The Blues currently are six points up, although the Calgary-based crew has three games in hand. 'The result sucks, but honestly I thought we dominated that game. We were all over 'em,' Flames forward Joel Farabee said after Thursday's 5-2 loss to the Stars, a night that left most of the Saddledome fans furious about a pair of goals that were disallowed by the NHL's Situation Room. 'But we can't really mope and dwell on it, we've just gotta get back. If we can play that intense and that style the rest of the year, I think we're gonna get in.' Their northern neighbours would, of course, like to throw a wrench in that plan. The Oilers currently are shorthanded, with both of their superstar forwards — Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl — likely to miss Saturday's Hockey Night in Canada clash at Rogers Arena. Edmonton's starting puck-stopper, Stuart Skinner, also was sidelined for Thursday's lopsided loss to the Kraken in Seattle. The Flames also are expected to be without an important piece Saturday, although there is optimism that Connor Zary's left knee injury might not be as severe as it initially looked after a freak collision with Stars sharpshooter Mikko Rantanen. However, with only 11 games left on the regular-season schedule, that doesn't necessarily mean that the 23-year-old Zary will be available down the stretch. 'Same as after a win, you move on right away,' Flames coach Ryan Huska said after his squad peppered the Stars with 48 shots on net. 'We don't have time to dwell on it. But I think what you'd like the team to recognize is most nights you play like that, you win those games. 'So we have to take a lot of the good that we did in tonight's game and make sure we bring that to the next game in Edmonton, and that's the most important thing. 'We deserved better tonight. We didn't get it, and it happens some nights … Our challenge is to make sure that our game in Edmonton mirrors this one, so we get ourselves back into the winning column again.' The Flames and Oilers haven't faced off since early November. Their season series is so far split, with one apiece. wgilbertson@

Vancouver Canucks at Calgary Flames odds, picks and predictions

The Vancouver Canucks (29-24-11) take on the Calgary Flames (30-23-10) Wednesday. Puck drop from Scotiabank Saddledome is set for 9 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's NHL odds around the Canucks vs. Flames odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions. Season series: Flames lead 2-1 This game has major playoff implications as Calgary sits in the final Wild Card spot in the West, just 1 point ahead of Vancouver and the St. Louis Blues. This is the last head-to-head meeting between the clubs. The Canucks fell 4-2 to the Montreal Canadiens at home Tuesday night. They got down 3-0 after 2 periods but got within 1 midway through the third after C Elias Pettersson drilled his 13th goal of the season. They couldn't make it all the way back, though. Vancouver has lost 2 straight and is just 4-6-0 in the last 10. The Flames beat Montreal 1-0 Saturday in their first home game since Feb. 23. They went 2-2-2 on the 6-game road trip. LW Joel Farabee had the lone tally, his 11th, in the shutout over the Habs. The Flames are an interesting bunch as they're really not great at anything. They just find ways to get it done. They're last in goals at 2.56 per game, 18th on the power play at 21.2% and 26th on the PK at 74.9%. His last start came Feb. 27 in a 5-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks as he allowed 4 goals on 24 shots. He faced Calgary in his first start of the season Oct. 9 and allowed 6 goals on 26 shots. Wolf stopped all 26 shots Montreal fired at him Saturday. He is 2-0-1 with a 1.64 GAA and .943 SV% in 3 starts this month. He faced Vancouver on New Year's Eve and beat it 3-1, stopping 23 of 24 shots fired his way. Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win! Play now! Canucks at Flames picks and predictions Prediction Flames 2, Canucks 1 This will be a playoff atmosphere, and I could see the extra frame being necessary. D Quinn Hughes (lower body), one of the best defensemen in the sport, hasn't played since March 1. However, there's a good chance he returns for this one. That will be a boost, but I just can't see the Canucks getting the necessary goaltending on the back-to-back. Take the FLAMES -145. PASS. There's no play here as the Canucks are far too expensive at -225 on the PL. This is more a fade on the offenses than faith in the goalies. The Canucks are 3-7 O/U in their last 10, and the Flames are 1-8-1. Three of the last 4 meetings saw fewer than 6 goals. I'll take the UNDER 5.5 (-120). 3 Takeaways From Flames 1-0 Shutout Win Over Montreal

The Calgary Flames (30-23-10) are back above the playoff cutoff line thanks to a 1-0 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night. Backed by 26 saves from Dustin Wolf and Joel Farabee's second period goal, the Flames played rope-a-dope for almost 25 minutes, bending but not breaking until the final buzzer. Thanks to two points, the Flames set themselves up for one of the season's biggest matchups, as the Vacouver Canucks visit the Saddledome on Wednesday night. Before we discuss a potential momentum shift for Calgary, let's discuss their performance on Saturday. After being acquired on Jan. 30 from the Philadelphia Flyers, Farabee scored one goal in his first 11 games with the Flames. He's now scored in back-to-back contests, meaning he may have finally found his groove with his new team. If that is the case, it's significant for the Flames, who have needed secondary scoring for the longest time. As a former two-time 20-goal scorer, he's got the potential to be a great addition to the lineup for the stretch run, which could help land Calgary in a playoff spot. "It's a real honour to play with these two guys."Joel Farabee speaks on developing chemistry with Mikael Backlund and Blake Coleman and on the win over Montreal! — Calgary Flames (@NHLFlames) March 9, 2025 During his post-game media scrum, Farabee pointed out that playing with veterans like Mikael Backlund and Blake Coleman is easy. He pointed out they are professionals who know how to do things to win meaningful games, which has helped him transition to his new team. The Flames scored one goal on Saturday night, surprisingly, it was enough for a much-needed win against the Canadiens. The home team came out and controlled the first period, having a 9-4 shot advantage. However, the Canadiens got 22 shots over the final two periods but could not solve Wolf, who finished with a 26-save shutout. The 23-year-old is seldom discussed as a potential candidate for the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year. This could be one of the year's biggest travesties if he doesn't finish a nomination, let alone walk away with the award. Statistically speaking, the Flames are one of the lowest scoring teams in the NHL, yet sit in a playoff spot after another one-goal victory on Saturday. Meanwhile, Wolf became the first Flames rookie goalie to record three shutouts in a single season. Ultimately, Calgary wouldn't be where they are without Wolf's brilliant work in the crease. So as a front runner for the Calder, he deserves Hart Trophy consideration because of what he means to the Flames. Connor Zary was back on the fourth line to start the game against the Canadiens, but also skated with every other line, spending a good portion of the game with Jonathan Huberdeau and Nazem Kadri. Although no one has asked head coach Ryan Huska what his game is concerning Zary's linemates, one has to wonder if the shuffling is to get him going again to produce a pace he was before his injury, or is his presence to get other skaters going? NHL Highlights | Canadiens vs. Flames - March 8, 2025 Dustin Wolf put together a 26-save shutout while Joel Farabee scored the only goal of the game to lead the Calgary Flames to a 1-0 win over the Montreal Cana... In 40 games, he had ten goals and 22 points, good enough for a .55 points-per-game pace. Meanwhile, the Flames went 19-14-7 before he was injured against the Anaheim Ducks on Jan. 7, a game in which they rallied for an overtime victory. Without Zary, Calgary went 7-7-1 and is now 4-2-2 with him back in the lineup. Unfortunately, he hasn't regained the scoring touch he had earlier in the season, with only two goals in eight games back. So, no one can blame Huska for moving him around to get him going again. Zary is a significant component of the Flames' attack and one of the key players in reigniting secondary scoring on a team desperate for goals.
