Tennessee Gives Update on Touted QB Joey Aguilar
The Tennessee Volunteers dealt with Nico Iamaleava's exit by adding UCLA Bruins quarterback Joey Aguilar to the quarterback room, which includes signal-callers Jake Merklinger and George MacIntyre. Head coach Josh Heupel provided an update on Aguilar, revealing that the highly regarded recruit is expected to arrive on campus by early June. The Vols eagerly anticipate Aguilar's integration into the team, especially as they rebuild their quarterback depth. Advertisement Patrick Brown of 247Sports reported on Tuesday, "Aguilar has been having virtual sessions with Tennessee's coaches via Zoom to help him get started with learning the offense while he completes his necessary academic obligations to complete his transfer, and the Vols are expecting him to get to campus in mid-to-late May." Tennessee Volunteers head coach Josh Heupel© Steve Roberts-Imagn Images He's able to be in contact,' Heupel said last week after the Tri-Cities stop of the Big Orange Caravan stop in Kingsport, Tenn., 'but he should be showing up here relatively quickly.' Aguilar, playing for App State Mountaineers, tallied 3,003 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions during the 2024 season. The Vols are optimistic that Aguilar's arrival will bring much-needed competition to the quarterback room and strengthen their offensive scheme under Heupel's system. Advertisement 'Man, you're going to start with the offense, understanding the communication process, the play calls, but then fundamentals and technique,' Heupel said. 'As everybody gets back here, then we get into more ball where we're all together. He'll start developing timing with the wide receivers as they get out there and start throwing it and growing and starting to build connection with your teammates and start garnering respect from those guys.' NIL holdout turning into QB trade, plus what's ‘GameDay' without Corso?
Until Saturday Newsletter 🏈 | This is The Athletic's college football newsletter. Sign up here to receive Until Saturday directly in your inbox. Today in college football news, this past weekend's WrestleMania gets a C+. Remember a couple weeks ago, when it looked like this April portal window would be a chill one? Anyway, a couple Big Ten and SEC teams are in the process trading quarterbacks. Unofficially trading, but still. Days after Tennessee's one-time College Football Playoff starter Nico Iamaleava left for UCLA via an NIL caper gone awry, former potential UCLA starter Joey Aguilar is likely headed to the Vols. It gets even more involved: I guess this is our makeshift version of the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams swapping quarterbacks a few years ago. That worked out for everybody. Two other consequential pieces of QB news from this transfer window, which closes later this week: Bill Belichick's North Carolina added South Alabama's Gio Lopez, who has a shot to win the job, and Notre Dame's Steve Angeli is transferring out, meaning the Irish will have a first-time starter this season. Advertisement 🌀 More portal: 📋 Whenever someone asks you what this whole college sports general manager thing is all about, just send them this decades-encompassing history by Sam Khan Jr. 😬 Lane Kiffin on former Georgia QB Carson Beck reportedly making $4 million at Miami: 'Did they watch his game against us?' (Kiffin's Rebels beat Georgia 28-10, but again fell short of the CFP.) 🍀 UNC and TCU will open the 2026 season in Ireland. Will Belichick be there? 💰 Yesterday, the Division I Board of Directors cleared the way for schools to begin directly paying players, pending House settlement approval. One step closer. 🏆 The current state of the CFP's evolution, with more haggling going on this week. 🦬 This week in Colorado drama: Deion Sanders addressed the debate over the Buffs having already retired Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders' jersey numbers. 'The only reason we are having this discussion is because his last name is Sanders,' said the coach in defense of the decision. Technically true, one way or the other. To be fair, the QB set a ton of school records. ⏰ It's NFL Draft week. If you want to catch up on the whole thing with one click, Nick Baumgardner's got you. More on this Thursday. We'll find college angles. These days, I'm not sure how much 'College GameDay' you actively watch. For the past few years, I haven't paid as much attention to it as I used to, though it's always on in the background each football Saturday morning. Mostly, my ears clock in whenever Nick Saban says, 'A'ight,' which means he's fully activated his explanation mode. Last week's news that the upcoming season-debut edition of the Saturday institution will be Lee Corso's swan song made me realize a few things. On Aug. 30, I'm probably gonna wipe a tear or two while watching a 90-year-old man adorn himself with a gigantic animal hat. And then a week later, there's a chance I just tune out for good. 'GameDay' would be fine without me, but I'm guessing I wouldn't be the only one parting ways. Real quick: Last Thursday, we talked about the college football community that spent its week raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for a refugee resettlement charity. Final tally: $1,370,251. Have a good Tuesday. Holler at me via untilsaturday@ with any thoughts. 📫 Love Until Saturday? Check out The Athletic's other newsletters.

UCLA, Tennessee swap quarterbacks
There are no trades in college football. However, two programs have performed a de facto signal-caller swap. With Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava transferring from Tennessee to UCLA, UCLA quarterback Joey Aguilar is now transferring to Tennessee. That's the word from Pete Nakos of Wake Forest and Tulane also were in the mix. Aguilar had transferred from Appalachian State to UCLA earlier this year. It's one of the basic realities of college football in the NIL era. Unless and until the universities recognize a union or Congress provides an antitrust exemption, the NIL-fueled chaos will continue.

Update on UCLA quarterback Joey Aguilar transferring to Tennessee football
Update on UCLA quarterback Joey Aguilar transferring to Tennessee football Fifth-year head coach Josh Heupel said Tennessee would search for a quarterback in the NCAA transfer portal following the Orange & White Game on April 12. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Nico Iamaleava entered the transfer portal following spring football. After his departure, Tennessee has two signal-callers on roster in redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger and early enrollee true freshman George MacIntyre. "You're trying to get your roster where it needs to be to give yourself the best chance when you get to kick off in the fall," Heupel said. "Certainly, with only two scholarship players at the quarterback position, we're going to have to find another gap." On Monday, Chris Low of ESPN announced UCLA senior quarterback Joey Aguilar will sign with the Vols in 2025. "The quarterback trade is complete," Low said. "Joey Aguilar plans to sign with Tennessee after transferring to UCLA from Appalachian State in the winter portal, sources tell ESPN. He trades places with Nico Iamaleava, who transferred from Tennessee to UCLA in the current portal. Back to business as usual."
