Oakmont officially on the clock since U.S. Open is next major on the calendar

Oakmont Country Club is officially on the clock. With the PGA Championship wrapping up on Sunday, the 125th U.S. Open is the next major on the calendar. Final preparations are taking place at Oakmont for next month's tournament. From the finishing touches on the course to creating that incredible fan experience, USGA officials assure us they're focusing on every last detail. Advertisement Now the course itself is notoriously tough for golfers, and it's said that they don't want the winner to finish under par. We got some insight from USGA Chief Championships Officer John Bodenhamer into why they love the challenge the course creates. 'We want to create the same test Bob Jones was tested under, and Ben Hogan and Ana Palmer and Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods and Dustin Johnson,' Bodenhamer said. 'And whoever wins this year will win something much like all of those great champions won when they climb that mountains up, they achieve something that you can't achieve anywhere else involved. You've really, you've really done something special.' On Monday, three of the 13 final qualifiers for the U.S. Open are taking place. The USGA also announced that 85 players have now earned full exemptions into the Open and are set to compete here in just a few short weeks. Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts. Pine Valley to host 2044 Walker Cup, USGA announces

New parents who want their sons to play golf might want to start whispering, 'Pine Valley.' The USGA says the fabled course in New Jersey will host the Walker Cup in 2044. There's a chance players on either team have not been born yet. 'We are committed to bringing our championships to the finest golf courses in the country,' said John Bodenhamer, USGA chief championships officer. 'To have Pine Valley as the host site of this prestigious event will not only produce memorable competition but also reinforce the stature of amateur golf worldwide.' The Walker Cup this year goes to Cypress Point for the first time. Future sites in the U.S. include Oakmont in 2032 and Chicago Golf Club in 2036. This will be the third time Pine Valley hosts the Walker Cup, most recently in 1985, a team that featured Davis Love III and Scott Verplank.

United States Golf Association announces 110 local qualifying sites for 125th U.S.

The United States Golf Association announced local and final qualifying sites for the 125th U.S. Open Championship. The historic match happens at Oakmont Country Club starting on June 12. It's a record tenth time the Open will be at Oakmont. The UGGA confirmed qualifying will happen between April 16 and May 19 at 110 sources in 32 states, Canada and Mexico. Competitors will complete 18 holes. Those advancing join exempt competitors in the final qualifications, which factor over 36 holes. That will happen in England and Japan in May, Canada in June and at 10 U.S. sites in May and June. 'It is of great importance that thousands of professional and amateur golfers with diverse backgrounds will once again have an opportunity to compete for a place in this year's U.S. Open and ultimately play in our national championship,' said USGA Chief Championships Officer John Bodenhamer. 'Allied Golf Associations in the United States, Tours in Europe, Canada and Japan, and National Federations will collaborate in providing a path to the championship through both qualifying stages to historic Oakmont Country Club where the world's greatest golfers will compete.' The USGA also announced online entry applications for golfers are available. Information can be found by clicking here. The USGA got more than 10,000 entries for the 2024 championship held at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in North Carolina. It was the third time entries exceeded the 10,000 mark. US Open becomes first major to offer exemptions to LIV Golf players

The US Open will become the first major to offer exemptions to LIV Golf players, introducing new qualification criteria for them to compete in the championship, the USGA announced on Wednesday. It will offer one spot to the highest ranked player in the top three of the LIV Golf Individual Standings as of May 19 – provided that player is not already exempt – for the US Open on June 12-15 at Oakmount Country Club. In 2026, the allocation will be extended to two spots. The move represents a step towards reconciliation between the USGA and the Saudi-backed circuit, which launched in 2022. 'The USGA continues to evaluate the pathways that exist to ensure those playing their best have the opportunity to compete in our national championship,' John Bodenhamer, USGA chief championships officer, said in a statement. 'Consistent with our historical approach, we continuously evaluate talent levels on professional tours and in amateur events, which has led us to add a new exemption category.' The agreement extends to the 2026 US Open, when two of the leading players from LIV Golf's final 2025 individual standings and its standings as of May 18, 2026 will gain entry. In previous years, LIV Golf players have been awarded exemptions which have allowed them to compete based on previous performances. Jon Rahm, Phil Mickelson and 2024 champion Bryson DeChambeau all already hold exemptions for this year's US Open. Players have also received special invitations to compete in other majors, as is the case with Joaquin Niemann's upcoming appearance at the Masters on April 10-13. However, this is the first time a formal pathway has been established between LIV Golf and one of the four majors. 'We're pleased that the USGA has formally created a new exemption for LIV Golf players to compete in the U.S. Open and appreciate Mike Whan's leadership and commitment to growing the game of golf,' said LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil in a statement. 'Every golf fan in the world longs to see the greatest players in the world competing on golf's biggest stages at the majors. LIV Golf is committed to working hand in hand with golf's governing bodies to elevate the sport in all corners of the world.' Alex Lancaster-Lennox contributed to reporting.
