Play By Play: Capitals Come Up Short In Game 5 Loss To End Season
May 8, 2025; Washington, District of Columbia, USA; Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson (74) scores a goal on Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen (31) in the third period in game two of the second round of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs at Capital One Arena. Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-Imagn Images It's that time, folks. After a couple of days off, the Washington Capitals are set to host the Carolina Hurricanes for a Game 5 match up that will hopefully see the Capitals extend their season. It's do or die tonight for the Caps. Final: 3-1 Canes. Look for Sammi's takeaways as we enter another offseason. Thanks for reading along. 3rd Period: 00:00 - 3-1 Final. Advertisement Jarvis seals it with an EN goal. 3-1. 1:59 - well. 2-1 Canes. 3:41 - HUGE save by Thompson. We're still tied but the Caps are definitely bringing it now. Big hit by Thomas Wilson. Big block by Chychrun. Just a much higher level of energy this period. I also appreciate that the refs are letting them play. - THIS. THIS IS THE PUSHBACK THEY'VE NEEDED. 13:34 - Caps almost break through but Andersen keeps it tied. 19:04 - PLD breaks through and gets a quality chance that's stopped by Andersen. Caps to the power play. Martinook attempted to remove Wilson's head from his shoulders with that hit. Hopefully Wilson makes him pay on the scoreboard. Advertisement - Away we go. 2nd Period: 00:00 - Capitals escape the second period still tied, after it looked like they had taken a lead. I mean they literally escape…Seth Jarvis rings one off the crossbar at the end of the period, after a poor turnover that should've ended the period more comfortably for DC. Shots are 17-9 in favor of Carolina. Capitals played a better period but they still need more. Carolina will start the 3rd with 19 seconds of power play time remaining. 1:41 - Hurricanes pressing. Thompson making some big big saves. TVR getting a penalty for a retaliation against Gostisbehere. Not an ideal time for that. Advertisement 9:21 - PK looking solid for the Capitals as they successfully kill off the penalty. - D.C. crowd really uniting around their general dislike of the referee right now. Overall, Washington is looking better this period. They strung together some good pressure in the offensive zone and showed how to beat this Carolina system. Now they just need to score more goals. 11:21 - Beauvillier with an interference penalty, because apparently that was interference. Caps to the PK. 12:33 - Canes kill the penalty. 14:33 - Caps back to the power play. And it's called back. Remains tied. 17:45 - Just like they drew it up. Broken play turns into a Matt Roy blast. Advertisement Play is offside though. It's being challenged but it will certainly come back. - The Capitals must be THN readers because it seems like they have more energy coming out this period. I can't help but think I had a role in this. We are underway in the second. 1st Period: End of the first period. Not sure what Thompson was doing swimming at the end there, but he also came up with some big-time important stops to keep it tied. Also an unfortunate post by Chychrun that could've given the Caps the lead. Shots: 8-4 in favor of the Hurricanes. The Corsi isn't as bad as you'd think a 51.35 percent in favor of the Canes. Advertisement That period could've been worse, but the energy level still needs to come up. The Capitals aren't playing much like a team that will be making golf reservations tomorrow if they don't get it into a new gear. Good thing for them is the Hurricanes aren't exactly playing like a team that wants to close out the series either. The Capitals can seize on this. 6:19 - Beau! 1-1! Not really a big energy play, but the crowd is alive. Sometimes you just have to take advantage of the other team's mistakes and Beauvillier did just that. Let's see if that breathes some life into that bench. Advertisement 9:00 - Someone needs to step up for Washington. There is zero energy right now and the crowd can definitely tell. 10:22 - Jordan Staal beats Thompson over the shoulder. LT really should've had that one. 1-0 12:30 - Ovechkin gets caught on a turnover and the Hurricanes kill some time off the power play. Capitals' PP looked disorganized and out of sorts until the last 30 seconds, when they finally string together some good play. Still scoreless. 14:30 - Caps going to the power play after a Dmitri Orlov hooking call. 17:44 - Caps controlling the play so far for the most part. Still no official shots for either team. Advertisement 20:00 - And awayyyyyy we go. Pregame: The puck drops at 7 p.m. at the Capital One Arena. If the Capitals are to beat Carolina, they need something from Alex Ovechkin
RALEIGH, N.C. — It is both inaccurate and unfair to lay the blame for the Washington Capitals' deficit in their second-round Stanley Cup playoff series at the feet of one player. Hockey is a team sport. Nineteen guys took the ice Saturday night against the Carolina Hurricanes. There were mistakes all over the place. (Looking at you, John Carlson.)

Svechnikov, Andersen lead Hurricanes past Capitals 4-0 in Game 3 of 2nd-round playoff series
RALEIGH, N.C. — Andrei Svechnikov pounced on a loose faceoff puck for his sixth postseason goal while Frederik Andersen had 21 saves as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Washington Capitals 4-0 on Saturday night for a 2-1 lead in their second-round playoff series. Svechnikov sprang into the circle to beat John Carlson to the puck and beat Logan Thompson at 12:34 of the second for the game's first goal in what turned out to be the start of Carolina's game-seizing surge.

NHL playoff picks, odds, how to watch info for Capitals at Hurricanes, Golden Knights at Oilers
On Saturday of the Stanley Cup playoffs, the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes kick off the action with the series tied 1-1. The Canes are tied for third in the odds (with the Toronto Maple Leafs) to win the Stanley Cup at +450, while the Caps have 10-to-1 odds. But, Washington took Game 2 3-1 and is a contender. The second game of the day is between the Vegas Golden Knights and the Edmonton Oilers, who have a 2-0 lead in the series. The Oilers are the Stanley Cup favorites at +300 and are showing why against Vegas. Advertisement Watching in person? Get tickets on StubHub. Series is tied 1-1 Series odds: Hurricanes -220, Capitals +180 In Game 1, the Hurricanes overpowered Washington in shots and scoring chances and won in overtime. In Game 2, the Capitals found ways to take back control. The Capitals' second line was one of the biggest differences in Game 2. That trio got absolutely steamrolled in matchup minutes against the Sebastian Aho line in Game 1. This time, their minutes were split between the Aho and Jordan Staal lines. Connor McMichael opened the scoring in the second period. His right wing, Tom Wilson, was active on both ends of the ice — he played a solid defensive game, was physical and chipped in two points. With the series shifting back to Carolina, the Canes can try to adjust those matchups back in their favor. John Carlson's power-play goal early in the third ended up being the game-winner for Washington. It was the first power-play goal against the Hurricanes this postseason, after 20 successful kills. Oilers lead series 2-0 Series odds: Oilers -600, Golden Knights +425 No goals through regulation from Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid? No problem for the Oilers. Edmonton's depth scoring stepped up in the second period, with goals from Jake Walman, Vasily Podkolzin and Darnell Nurse. Vegas responded late in the second, with a William Karlsson goal to help keep the Golden Knights in this. Victor Olofsson's power-play goal pulled Vegas within one, then Alex Pietrangelo tied the game 4-4 to force overtime. After some iffy goaltending from Adin Hill through two periods, Calvin Pickard had a tough third period but was more composed for overtime. Nicolas Roy's major penalty (and game misconduct) for cross-checking sent Edmonton to the power play for five minutes. The Golden Knights killed that off, but still fell short in overtime. McDavid flew past Jack Eichel, who did a good job slowing down the Oilers' top line in regulation, and set up Draisaitl off the rush for the game-winner. The Oilers head home with a 2-0 series lead. Tom Wilson was everywhere for the Caps in Game 2
The Washington Capitals are starting to run out of ways to describe Tom Wilson. Heart and soul. Does it all. A rarity. Drives the bus. Leads the charge. 'He's the type of guy that literally can change momentum in games,' defenseman John Carlson said after a Capitals win in Montreal late last month, 'the most ways of probably anyone in the league.'
