Mike Pence Says He's Ruling Out Another White House Run
Former Vice President Mike Pence said Sunday he is ruling out another presidential run after an unsuccessful bid during the 2024 contest. In an interview with NBC News' Kristen Welker, Pence 'I don't see it, but we'll keep standing for everything we've always stood for, and we'll let the future take care of itself,' said Pence, who served as President Donald Trump's vice president during his first term. Pence said that he wants to have a role in shaping conservative policy, although he did not provide details. 'I want to be a voice for conservative values. I want to be a voice for the policies and liberties enshrined in the Constitution of the United States,' he said. 'I want to be a champion of the conservative cause, and that's where I'll stay focused, and we'll let the future take care of itself.' When he dropped out of the race in October 2023, Pence had failed to attract enough primary voters and donors to sustain a candidacy that had languished in the low single digits in polls. Meanwhile, he was low on campaign cash when he ultimately bowed out. Related Stories 5/17/2025 5/17/2025 Pence's third-quarter fundraising totals on Oct. 15 of that year had, at the time, showed his campaign was $620,000 in debt, with only $1.2 million cash on hand. That was far less than several better-performing Republican rivals and insufficient for a White House race. Pence, 65, ran as what he characterized as a traditional social and fiscal conservative, as well as a foreign policy hawk, while calling for increased military aid to Ukraine and cuts in welfare spending. Months later, he did not back Trump as the GOP nominee. The relationship between the two had soured over disagreement about Pence's handling of the 2020 electoral count in Congress on Jan. 6, 2021, and the political fallout from the protest that was held outside the Capitol the same day. Earlier this month, Pence accepted the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for what the JFK Library Foundation says was 'for putting his life and career on the line to ensure the constitutional transfer of presidential power on Jan. 6, 2021.' As for the 2028 race, Trump said earlier this month he is 'looking to have four great years, and turn it over to somebody, ideally a great Republican, a great Republican to carry it forward.' The president told NBC News on May 4 that Vice President JD Vance would be 'at the top of the list' in terms of who could be the Republican front-runner. But he noted that there are others in the GOP who could run for the nation's highest office, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Reuters contributed to this report.

D.L. Hughley Says Mike Pence Winning Courage Award Shows How Far U.S. Has Fallen
D.L. Hughley Says Mike Pence Winning Courage Award Shows How Far U.S. Has Fallen D.L. Hughley says Mike Pence winning the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award captures just how bad things in the country have become ... 'cause Pence shouldn't have been in danger when certifying election results in the first place. The comedian joined us on "TMZ Live" -- as he does every Tuesday -- and, Harvey and Charles asked him about the former Vice President taking home the huge honor for "putting his life and career on the line to ensure the constitutional transfer of presidential power on January 6, 2021." Mike Pence and Trump Happier Times - Click image to open gallery D.L. says he understands why Pence won the award ... but, he thinks it speaks more to how much the political climate in the country has changed, rather than actually accomplishing anything above and beyond. Hughley explains Pence was just doing what so many dozens of politicians and other American citizens have done before him -- upholding the Constitution of the United States like he pledged he would when he was sworn in as vice president. Mike Pence Presidential Campaign Trail - Click image to open gallery This shouldn't be a big deal, Hughley says ... but, the country's so out of whack that even the simple act of performing one's duty is a big deal these days. D.L. adds that Donald Trump's reelection last year proves his point ... because Pence's act of patriotism only ended up putting a four-year pause on DJT's return to the Oval Office. Mike Pence Emotional Over Trump's Jan. 6 Tweet About Him Having No Courage Hughley does have some kind words for Pence, calling him a principled man ... but, ultimately, D.L.'s looking at the bigger issues in the country. During his award acceptance speech last week, Pence talked about how the Constitution binds the nation together ... adding that January 6 was a "tragic day but it became a triumph of freedom. History will record that our institutions held." D.L. says all of that shouldn't have been necessary back in 2021 ... and, that the country's in trouble because it was. Want more of D.L.'s hot takes? Trump live: Mike Pence slams tariff plan in major intervention against former ally
Former Vice President Mike Pence has rebuked Donald Trump 's sweeping tariffs and the White House 's 'wavering support' for Ukraine in a bruising CNN interview. A day after receiving the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for his actions concerning the January 6 insurrection, Pence sat down with Kaitlin Collins Monday to deliver one of his most wide-ranging critiques of the president's second administration. While the former vice president said he supports using tariffs to pressure China into trade talks, he argued Trump's broader levies on allies and trade partners will 'ultimately harm the American economy.' Pence also expressed disappointment in Trump's support of Kyiv, warning that Russian President Vladimir Putin 'doesn't want peace. He wants Ukraine' and that the Trump administration 'has only emboldened Russia.' It came as Trump doubled down on his plans to resurrect Alcatraz as a prison after it had been shuttered for decades in an Oval Office press conference Monday. 'I mean, it represents something very strong, very powerful, in terms of law and order. Our country needs law and order,' he said. During a Sunday evening blitz of social media posts, Donald Trump demanded that one of the most notorious prisons in American history be reopened. Incidentally, the president's sudden push for the tourist destination of Alcatraz to once again become a maximum-security prison complex came just hours after a South Florida PBS station aired the 1979 classic film Escape from Alcatraz. The president spent the past weekend at his Mar-a-Lago resort, which is located in Palm Beach. During an Oval Office press conference Monday, the president was asked why he decided that he needed to resurrect Alcatraz as a prison after it had been shuttered for decades, prompting Trump to deliver a rambling response that included him touting his own cinematic vision. Mike Pence Scolds Trump For Sending The 'Wrong Message' With This Move
Former Vice President Mike Pence on Monday said he was 'deeply disappointed' in Donald Trump for pardoning rioters who engaged in violence during the deadly Jan. 6, 2021 attack. 'The president has every right under the Constitution to grant pardons but in that moment, I thought it sent the wrong message,' said Pence in an interview with CNN's Kaitlan Collins. Pence's comments arrived just one day after he received the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for his role in refusing to block the certification of electoral votes amid Trump's efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Pence, who notably didn't endorse Trump in last year's election, has repeatedly defended his actions inside the Capitol that day. Amid the riot, gallows were set up outside and Trump's supporters chanted 'hang Mike Pence.' Pence has previously emphasized that Trump was 'wrong' for his role in the riot and his 'reckless words' endangered his family as well as other lawmakers in the building. He's also stressed that he didn't think Trump should pardon 'anyone' who assaulted a police officer during the attack. On the first day of his second term, Trump signed an executive order pardoning more than 1,500 rioters convicted for their role in the attack, a blanket move that led to pardons of violent offenders (an act that Vice President JD Vance once claimed would 'obviously' be inappropriate). Over 600 people were charged with impeding or assaulting police amid the attack, per the Justice Department. Later in his CNN interview, Pence weighed in on Vance previously declaring that he was 'extremely skeptical' that the former veep's life was 'ever in danger' during the riot. 'I would just say that I'll leave that to the judgment of history,' he told Collins. After Collins asked him directly if he felt like his life was 'in danger' on the day of the riot, Pence noted that there wasn't a moment that he felt 'physically threatened' that day. Mike Pence Finally Goes Scorched Earth on Trump and His Agenda
Former Vice President Mike Pence criticized Donald Trump by name Monday after failing to directly call out the president in a speech just 24-hours earlier. Pence spoke to CNN the day after receiving the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for refusing to give in to Trump's demands on Jan. 6, 2021. While Pence was critical of the administration, he never referred to President Trump. On Monday, Pence took a more direct route: naming Trump and telling CNN that the thousands of pardons or commutations surrounding the Capitol Riots 'sent the wrong message.' 'I was deeply disappointed to see President Trump pardon people that engaged in violence against law enforcement officers that day,' Pence said. 'The president has every right under the Constitution to grant pardons, but in that moment, I thought it sent the wrong message.' Pence also re-upped his qualms about Trump's tariffs, which have caused alarm about a flailing economy. 'I do have concerns that, with the president's call for broad-based tariffs against friend and foe alike, that ultimately the administration is advancing policies that are not targeted at countries that have been abusing our trade relationship, but rather are essentially new industrial policy that will result in inflation, that will harm consumers and that will ultimately harm the American economy,' he said. Pence wrote an op-ed last month for The Wall Street Journal saying as much, while also giving plenty of compliments to his former boss. Pence on Monday also called for lowering trade barriers with U.S. allies. But for authoritarian regimes, 'we ought to get tough, stay tough and demand that they open their markets and respect our intellectual property,' he said. Pence added, 'I do think this version of tariff policy that's broad-based, indiscriminate, applies tariffs to friend and foe alike, is not a win for the American people.' And as for Trump admitting that his tariffs will mean children will have to make do with 'two dolls instead of thirty dolls,' Pence wasn't buying it. 'I have two grown daughters. I have three small granddaughters. And look, keeping dolls affordable, keeping our kids' toys affordable, that really is part of the American dream,' Pence said. 'I think the American people are going to see the consequences of this. I think they'll demand a different approach.' On the topic of Russia's war against its neighbor, Pence called out the Trump administration's 'wavering' support for Ukraine. 'If the last three years teaches us anything, it's that Vladimir Putin doesn't want peace; he wants Ukraine. And the fact that we are now nearly two months of following a ceasefire agreement that Ukraine has agreed to and Russia continues to delay and give excuses confirms that point,' Pence said. 'It's the reason why in this moment, we need to make it clear that the United States is going to continue to lead the free world, to provide Ukraine with the military support they need to repel the Russian invasion and achieve a just and lasting peace,' he added. 'The wavering support the administration has shown over the last few months, I believe, has only emboldened Russia.' Pence also weighed in on Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky's February meeting with Trump and Vice President JD Vance in the Oval Office: 'regrettable.' 'I thought President Zelensky was ill-advised to take his argument before the media in the Oval Office,' Pence said, 'and I thought it was unfortunate the way the president and the administration responded in that moment.'
